at least you saw some warnings about made in abyss before you looked into it

I'd love a dungeon diving mystery adventure story like made in abyss but with less horribly hurting children and less pervert gaze at aforementioned children. That'd be more ideal.

No, not horny in the way that anime is generally horny. But there's a pretty extreme sadomasochistic bent to his work especially when it comes to violence towards girls and women.

I mean yeah that's just men writing women a lot of the time

I fuckin love gundam but tomino deserves a punch in the face

Yeah he's very cavalier about getting rid of people he's no longer interested in when he wants to focus on a tighter story

I think it's a real weakness, especially because the stories he wants to tell don't typically include dynamic women in lead roles

I mean I too enjoy Psycho-Pass but it's not exactly sparse in terms of violence towards women or psychologically torturing its lead female protagonist either.

Well yeah, fiction is bad towards women, look at the juggernaut of the MCU and the whole black widow thing

Sometimes you just want a show about sad cops, though

I overall really liked the first season of Psycho Pass but there's one violent attack in the streets the show really lingers on that I found really disturbing. Then they just kept showing people watching it on tv and on their computers etc. I know it was supposed ot be disturbing, but it did its job too well for me. It's also not alone in the show, but it was the one that got me.

I tried Made in Abyss and found all the landscape and environment art gorgeous and good music, neat premise. Knowing a little bit of its rep and the child like appearances I noped out pretty quick.

The art and worldbuilding are incredible, some of the best I've ever seen

    but I got to
the fourth incidence of a preteen girl who exists in the plot almost exclusively to be tortured in a horrifically macabre bodily-autonomy-violating way
and I was like "I am going to stop giving this person the benefit of the doubt now"

Have you heard of Dungeon Meshi/Delicious in Dungeon? Our protagnists are going to eat their way through the dungeon come hell or high water. Also it has some of the best art and fantasy character design out there, point blank.

Gaim believes micchy is a good guy

It literally does not until the very end of the story when he finally tries to redeem himself (very much a work in progress by the end of the series). Kouta does, because Kouta is an unobservant moron until, like, the very final stretch.

EDIT: He's only second on being an unobservant moron to Takatora, and that takes effort.

Those episodes happen after urobuchi leaves the show, urobuchi's final touch on Micchy is a shot of him weeping alone framed in a way that is meant to draw empathy from the viewer

He's framed as a tragic victim of the circumstances of being rich and having expectations forced on him

My biggest disappointment with Gaim is that Urobuchi has shown that he understands how structures affect people, and it's even present in Gaim! But he's too enamored of the idea of the Noble Sacrifice as portrayed in kamen rider as a whole to thread that needle

Also Mai literally disappears in to an exposition cave for a third of the show lol

I and a lot of the comment that I've seen just makes fun of Micchy for being an incel suckup that constantly sides with whoever seems strongest at the moment. Hell, one of the villains calls him out on the fact that nobody can trust him because of that.

Then again, that villain was Yoko, which, yeah. Yoko was the biggest issue that I had with the series since, ew.

Yep. Pretty much a goal-oriented writing.
Urobuchi wanted Kaito to survive to the end, since he wanted the last fight to be Kouta vs. Kaito. Problem is, Baron was not planned to live that long on the toy catalog AND Kaito is a massive unlikeable asshole that constantly drives away allies, so it made no sense for him to live that long. Answer: Just have the one competent female villain want a piece of that ass for herself for "his leadership". Right.

Yeah, also that, but getting a Genesis Driver wasn't going to keep him alive by itself. So.

But popularity of unlikeable assholes is not surprising. See: The large fanbase of characters like Sasuke and Bakugo.

They both literally try to go on all by themselves, then they (and the writer) realize that they are just going to get offed without accomplishing anything since everybody else has allies but them, so they have to scrap in order to get some extra warm bodies around.

    Bakugo is a fantastic character

He's a victim of a system designed to create psychopathic abusers, and it takes a lot of the real world beating his ass to make him realize that life doesn't work like he was taught it does. Which is a good character arc, but doesn't change the fact that he's an unlikeable asshole during most of his series.

Uh huh. Which is why they inmediatly went to the villains when they realized that they couldn't do anything by themselves. Even when is counter productive, since on Sasuke's case, you know what is useful for getting revenge? Having an army as backup. And Kaito went to Ryouma for scraps because he had to beat Kouta, even though Kouta at that point was full on against YGRDRASSIL.

There is nothing genre writers enjoy more than having their special boy walk up to a conflict with two defined sides and say 'I can simply make everyone be friends'

It didn't appear first in Fire Emblem Fates but it's what I always associate the idea with

The big problem with "let's turn enemies into friends" is that if you do make friends with your former enemies, you weren't really enemies to begin with.

I'm sorry, but this is nonsense. They're enemies because they have a worldview that is in conflict with yours. If you can convince them to change their worldview, then they can be friends.

Anime does love to half-ass rehabilitation for villains, even unrepetant ones, out of some kind of misguided both-sidesism. See? Throat Ripper the Orphan Torturer was a former slave. Here's an emotional backstory and montage to weep over.

There are also quite a few "BUT FRIENDSHIP" anime where the relationships are actually deeply toxic bullshit.
