I was in the fan translation community back in the day, and ended up working on/stuck with a lot of shows that I would currently write off or maybe at most read a synopsis after the fact (like Revue Starlight, or Fena both come to mind). There are a number that really surprised me that on the surface are incredibly repellant or just plain dumb. Which isn't to say that on the balance, they aren't still quite repellant, but some were capable of some really surprising things.

Juuden-chan, for example. A story about magical girls who go around 'fixing' depressed people by giving them a shot of electricity, where they learn "Hey, uh, maybe drugging people into happiness is actually fucking them up, and we need to actually understand, empathize with, and try to help them, not solve everything with faux-drugs." But at the same time, the number of problematic other things in the show could fill its own series, which shouldn't surprise some because it's by the same artist as Mahoromatic who openly did quite a lot of porn. Rampant fanservice, everybody peeing because that's the artist's fetish, the 'hilarious' joke of the girls walking in on the dude undressing and him clubbing them with a bat until they develop a fetish for it. It is impossible to recommend, or watch, but it's a very thin analogy for opioid abuse, which is more substance than most things manage.

Or Chu-bra. Middle schoolers in an underwear club. And yeah, there is no way at all to dress that up well. Except the actual show was largely about body positivity, that underwear can be sexual, but it should be about being comfortable with yourself, either gender. More focused on teaching about underwear than anything, and largely inoffensive... aside from 12 year olds focused on underwear.

Or the godawfully titled "A Sister is All You Need," about a dude who wrote not-OreImo, and has a personal fetish for incest, and all his friends are other light novel authors, including a 15 year old who's obsessed with him whose gimmick is that she non-sequiturs everything he says into some form of "You could be fucking me right now if you want." Every now and then, it pulls these really almost Scrubs-esque episodes where it's them struggling with their place in the world and what they want from themselves. But most of the show is garbage, not because of anything you might assume from the above paragraph, but because it's trying to sell board games. Yes, board games. You have entire episodes where they sit around a table, explain Secret Hitler, all say their character line, and then they move on to Boggle.

I'm two episodes into Revue Starlight and I'm not sure I like it that much. It's Utena but not as weird or nostalgic. It's Symphogear but not as exciting or ridiculous. Which means it's just kinda mediocre.

It feels like the Love Live/Idolmaster sanitization/distillation/commercialization of a bunch of more niche properties, which I guess makes sense if it mainly exists to promote the mobile game and merch. It's taking bits from other things, where the original would go whole hog 120% off the deep end with it, and giving it a nice, glossy finish over safely rounded edges.

I haven't watched it myself, but that sounds rather unlike what I've heard of it, since basically all of my friends who watched it seem to be of the general opinion that Revue Starlight is basically what if Utena was directed by someone who used imagery for consistent visual metaphors that mean things, instead of just throwing out stuff and letting the viewer Rorschach the blots.

Yeah I'm doing it as part of a groupwatch thing, and that seems to be how all the repeat viewers see it. They're making these detailed breakdowns of what they think every random screenshot means. But like...it's a kinda boring show about a clumsy underachiever who is magically good at one thing. It is incredibly generic. Pointing out that the overlooked glasses girl has a lot of shadow and mirror imagery isn't really that smart, and doesn't make the actual show fun or interesting.

I didn't watch much of it, but Revue Starlight felt like it was just kinda derivative of other, smarter shows. It didn't really have anything to say except for where it lifted bits from other shows that happened to have subtext in the original texts.

I thought that Dominion Tank Police was gonna be about police with tanks, but it's actually about how police should never be given tanks because they're all psychopaths and they'll want nukes next. At least from the one episode I saw.

And that diversity isn't an answer for police brutality, because it turns out women can be just as psychopathic as the men.

I have never seen an arc end as clearly and definitively as the first half of Birdie Wing just did. Wow. I would almost expect a new OP/ED next time. Maybe a subtitle, even.

I don't know how to convince anyone who isn't already watching to give it a shot, but, seriously...Spy X Family is the obvious big hit this season, but everyone expected that. Birdie Wing is an anime original that nobody knew anything about and has come out of nowhere to easily rival it in entertainment quality. It doesn't have the same money and care poured into it, but it's still an incredibly fun watch.

I never noticed the penis thing in the opening song tho, that's pretty goofy.
There was a "watch where you're grabbing" joke with kids in like the first 5 minutes.
So, I couldn't get very far in watching Birdie Wing.

Huh. A shonen manga called Berserk of Gluttony just made a power level system actually kinda interesting for how it differentiates two planes of existence within the same power structure. Essentially there's real numbers, which are just your basic 1 to 99999999999999999999999 and beyond sort of thing, but then there's E. I had to look this up but from what I can tell E is used for logarithmic functions and features heavily in computers. So in the context of this manga's world people in the E plane of existence can't even be touched by anyone in the real number plane of existence, because they themselves are altering reality like lines of code.

The story itself is eh but I thought bit was kind of neat. Certainly drew my attention for a bit puzzling through.

Uhhhh... E? As in Euler's number? It's a real number. Its value is between 2 and 3, IIRC. Do you mean the imaginary number i, whose value is the square root of -1?

"e" is Euler's constant, used in calculating logarithms, and is approximately 2.71828183
"E" is used in scientific notation of very large numbers meaning *10, and then to a power to represent omitted digits, like 5.23E^9 is 5,230,000,000
