I just finished Revue Starlight episode 7 and would now encourage anyone who didn't get that far to at least give it a shot through this episode. Something interesting is happening, and personally I enjoyed the songs in episodes 5 and 6 a lot. Even the ED is changing every episode now, similar to Fly Me to the Moon.

What a delightfully ditzy... child... assassin... orphan.

I think its pretty clear shes was literally groomed for the job. Westalis is not a good place. The only reason it can be funny is because she truly believes shes doing something good

That and there seems to be a lot of "she only kills those who deserve it" energy.

So I'm just starting One Piece.

These early episodes suffer from 90's anime villain speeches really badly.

Yeah, I know. These speeches sort of stand out even compared to other 90's anime I've watched though.

But if it's just Japanese Loony Toons I shall adjust my expectations accordingly.

Yor's urge to murder people to solve problems easily is literally played as a joke

    Manga spoilers
Given the most recent flashback chapters with Loid, we will almost certainly get more backstory on how Yor ended up becoming an assassin, but fundamentally it is a light hearted comedy series

According to CODA, the pay rates for FUNimation shows ranged from $35 to $75 per hour depending on the number of hours worked.

Well, that's a lot more than I expected, at least. (And more than teachers make, sadly. Hell, dispatchers don't make that.) I'm all for them getting some union representation going, though.

Oh, is that why the beginning of One Piece didn't gel with me that much? I read Kenshin as a kid/teen, it was emotionally compelling at the time but I've cooled off on it significantly. I guess I was subconsciously wary of stuff that looked similar?

Yeah, I definitely see it taking that Dragon Ball path, from “gag series which sometimes goes hard” to “straightforward story with gag elements”

…I guess that could also be One Piece, or a lot of other shonen type stuff, but my childhood is rooted in Dragon Ball and early Dragon Ball is such a gag series

there is some deep dumb in those communities. just a complete illiteracy towards the basics of storytelling and some sort of fighting game brainrot that turns every plot development into a tier list. also weirdly territorial and adversarial about characters that are canonically bonded deeper than family or friendship almost like it was the central theme of the story.

the one piece subreddit introduced a "powerscaling" flair but i think they stumbled a bit with execution of its implementation. instead of posting to r/OnePiece things like "Advanced CoA/CoC Zoro would lowdiff doubled awakened Blackbeard, a 3000 word treatise", it should just route those posts to an old daisy wheel printer that leads directly to a shredder that dumps into an incinerator which dumps the ashes into a toilet. then the username and IP of the user are banned from reddit and preferably their ISP and all that is displayed on the screen are the words "TOUCH GRASS AND MAYBE READ A BOOK".

and fair enough, it could be my bias that i tend to view anonymous english speaking anime discourse as probably mostly 22-40 year olds, but often times it does read exactly that way.

Probably just a confluence of ninja historically disguising as commonfolk with tools appropriate for the job, that just so happen to be functional as weapons, combined with European-type nobility stereotypically having butlers and maids. So when you have a ninja tasked with being bodyguard for nobility there's an easy link.

Alternatively, anime writers/artists with maid fetish
