I have finished Ranking of Kings
If everyone had forgiven Miranjo at the end, that probably would have been a stretch, but I like it's mostly Daida advocating for her (and Bojji but he's pure pureness so it doesn't necessarily count), mainly because he saw her best side (as a mutilated child).

I'm rather impressed otherwise with how the conflict unfolded and resolved, everyone having believable motives that can eventually be resolved without killing. Strong Undertale vibes on that front. Poor Ouken though.

Bojji's fighting style is a visceral joy to watch. In a world where political legitimacy is backed by strength, it's nice to see skill get a word in edgewise.

I wonder how much any future series will hang out around the Bosse Kingdom, and how much is Bojji and his adventure to become King of the Pirates.

A good time, and decent plot hooks for later adventures without really hampering the resolution of this arc.

Content warning for the beach episode of Gargantia; there's a B-plot that goes full Yikes. It put a bad enough taste in my mouth that I dropped the series.
A group of transgender prostitutes pursue the main character for sex. (It's been a few years, so this may not be exactly correct.)
Yeah that was the very next episode for me actually. It's a not too far off standard beach day/hot spring episode for most of it that's a little horny but moderate by usual examples. The bits about Ledo trying to find a way to contribute to the community and hunting for a job is all good. But then there's a long full blown trans panic comedy chase scene that is BAD that gets brought back up again at the end too. I could see how'd it'd put you off.

I don't think there's a legitimacy problem with webtoons like there is manga. They're already online for free viewing so all that's really being done is translation.

Skip to Loafer is proof positive that while it is fun to reinvent the wheel or execute well on parody and satire, sometimes you just want your genre fiction done well along the standards set by its predecessors

Honestly, I will forever prefer a well executed example of its genre to some wacky premise that ends up flailing around, personally!

(I also appreciate that the aunt is just a trans lady and this is just not really some dramatic thing. She's just the standard Reliable Older Woman character archetype for the teenage protagonists to come to for girl advice)

Nao is definitely a great example of the empathy that the author approaches their characters with, but I think what you're saying is both true and not (in a good way).

It's true because to Mitsumi, Nao is just her cool reliable aunt that she loves. And she doesn't really think beyond that - which like of course she doesn't, she's only 15/16, adults are off in their own unknowable world to kids her age, and Mitsumi's a simple loving soul.

But we've got little bits and glimpses of Nao's life that lets us appreciate how much she's gone through to be in a happy place now. She was miserable in high school - In one chapter Nao talks about how it's actually a little hard for her to hear Mitsumi talking about her happy high school experience because it was SO bad for Nao. Graduated, went off to be a salaryman, it's implied that when she quit her job and started transitioning there was a big blowup with her dad and she probably wasn't welcome home for a few years. And there's still maybe a bit of a generational split in the family - the parents are still kinda awkward about stuff, her brother is on her side, and then the kids just love her and don't even think about her trans-ness at all and don't think about why Nao rarely ever comes home to visit.

So like in Mitsumi's life she's just her cool reliable female relative that she lives with, but we also have like a full queer narrative of Nao's life and self-discovery and struggle to get there that's mostly all over MItsumi's head. But I really appreciate how the writing handles it - being trans isn't like the defining feature of Nao's character, but it is still part of her life experiences. It does a really good job of avoiding feeling like either tokenism or moralizing, the author's not just writing a cis women with a trans label tossed in, but it's not like dwelling on her transness as if that's the only thing interesting about her.

Definitely between like this, Blue Period, and a few other recent manga by younger mangaka, recent manga's really starting to grow past those shitty old okama type jokes (finally). It's nice to see progress.

    Kaguya: Ultra Romantic episodes 12 + 13:
    Wow. They went all out.

I know I hyped myself up for this, but it was so, so good.

Episode 13 had movie quality. They pretty much nailed everything from the manga.

The little afterwards scene was a great cherry on the sundae.

They also announced another something, I think a movie, not another season though.

    cliches are for the poors

I just binged through the Kaguya-Sama chapters from the point I dropped it off (Chapter 252) and boy that's a ride! What great fun!

    Latest chapter:
I loved the "crying Kaguya casually taking a plane to California to personally say goodbye to the President" gag.

    It's progress, I think?

    https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2022-06-24/publisher-seven-seas-voluntarily-recognizes-uw7s-workers-union/.187035
The United Workers of Seven Seas (UW7S), a union for employees of manga and light novel publisher Seven Seas Entertainment, announced on Friday on Twitter that Seven Seas has agreed to voluntarily recognize UW7S as a union based on a majority card check. This eliminates the need for a National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) conducted election.

    UW7S' full statement reads:

UW7S is happy to announce that Seven Seas has agreed to voluntarily recognize us as the union based on a majority card check. This decision by Seven Seas eliminates the need for an NLRB conducted election and will pave the way for a more expedited path to bargaining a first contract. At a time when many employers continue to fight the unionization of their employees, we appreciate that Seven Seas decided to respect the voices of the majority of staff and recognize us. We look forward to developing a mutually beneficial relationship and reaching a collective bargaining agreement in the near future.

Yep. I can appreciate the technical achievement, but it leaves me completely flat, because I've seen thousands of cool ass action scenes by now and "it looks flashy!" isn't a novelty or draw any more.

I'm not immune to it, anything Gainax, Trigger or Orange has my attention by default regardless of substance, however those studios have a look.

The original Mobile Suit Gundam television series has been available to stream on Crunchyroll for a while now.

Its sequel, Mobile Suit Gundam Z - or Zeta Gundam - is available to stream on Funimation.

As of yesterday, Zeta Gundam's sequel, Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ (Double Zeta) and the feature film finale Char's Counterattack are available to stream on Crunchyroll.

That's the entire epic story of Amuro, Char, Bright, and the rest, finally available legally to stream in the US.

Y'know, if you want to plan your Animenagerie schedule out for... a while.

Gundam, Zeta Gundam and Gundam ZZ is A Lot and I wouldn't recommend one long consecutive run, even if everyone enjoyed them, which is not at all a guarantee. Each series is around 40-50 episodes long by itself.

Zonugal doesn't like giant robots, says they're too big. If he doesn't enjoy Big O then I feel that entire genre is a wash for him. We'll see soon!

I'd be upset if our first Gundam show wasn't G anyways. I might reluctantly agree to one of the UC OVAs, for historical purposes.

I recently found out that the author of Spy x Family had previously done three different one-shots that all failed to become full series. So he combined all three to create Spy x Family.

One of the one-shots was a spy story with the disguises and everything like Loid uses.
One was a fantasy story about a man and a woman taking care of an adorable Medusa-kid that they have to keep secret.
The last one was about a witch.

You can easily see where elements of the first two became Spy x Family, but what about the third?

    Well...
    This is the witch.

I love that the two leads are finally dating but it's practically an accident. She says something a bit unintentionally flirty, before he even thinks about it he doubles down and asks if she wants to try dating, and whoops now they're dating and both of them are kinda surprised by it.

Normally will they won't they tension comes from like, self doubt that so and so REALLY likes me. Like more of a self esteem risk. And while they have a little bit of that, the two of them are such wholesome little sweethearts that more than anything it feels like they're just afraid of messing up their friendship if things don't work out. They really, legitimately don't want to risk their friendship.

So now they're dating and like instead of being purely excited they're actually more freaked out than before.
