Went back and watched the rest of spyxfamily.
The second half is much better than the first, but I think my problem with it is that unlike the regular stories, where the characters (very very slowly) advance and change, this is just a gag story where nothing new is revealed about them. Which...isn't the bit of spyxfamily I like. Yes, I know it's a gag story. Only no, it actually isn't: it reveals more about each character as you continue through it, and the characters slowly change as the story advances, as does the main plot. This ep, and the original extra chapter, do not do this. It's all old information, and we know all of it already. So yeah, kinda disappointed. Hopefully season 2 keeps on going without too many of these, or puts them in OVAs or something.
The extra chapter in the manga was fine, cos its a short read. Turning it into a half an hour was a slog, with only a few interesting bits. Sometimes doing a story word for word doesn't really adapt well to anime, cos anime is by its very nature slower. You can absord all the information in a single panel in a split second, but the anime has to show you over time as the characters speak their lines, and they just didn't really do anything very interesting with it here but extend the panels into animation. Putting that as a finale, which normally is fairly big and exciting, is a pretty weird decision. Yes there's a second course, but they still tend to make the mid season finale more interesting than this, especially given the next half is in October.

I don't really watch pure gag shows much so maybe that's just my preferences. I'm sure if you are just here for the gags its fine, there were some good ones in there. Wow!

My only issue with Black Clover is related to the manga's latest development.
We're reaching 7DS levels of zipping past what seemed like an actual ending.

I read a bit of Black Clover but it didn't grab me. I'm not super big on regular battle shonen, having read quite a few of them, so maybe I just don't care anymore, or maybe I need to read more to get invested, I dunno.

Black Clover's one of those "it gets good later" series, so it's absolutely not surprising folks bounced off the beginning

The thing about Black Clover is that it's basically just a fairly well executed battle shonen.

No bells or whistles, nothing fancy at all, just "underdog boy punch hard" with some fun side characters and plot arcs/villain motivations that mostly make sense and aren't stupid (though the general world building is fairly dumb imo).

The follow-up to the underwater temple arc is where I feel like it takes a step up (no idea on chapter numbers since I watched the anime), but the basic pattern of how things work never really changes.

For as dumb as the world building can be I do like that in a world where magic is largely the domain of nobility, especially strong magic in Clover Kingdom, there's a reason for it that is not flattering in the least.
Namely that the ancestors of the current nobility betrayed the elves and slaughtered them to steal their magical power out of greed. This comes back to bite their descendants HARD.

I love that the two leads are finally dating but it's practically an accident. She says something a bit unintentionally flirty, before he even thinks about it he doubles down and asks if she wants to try dating, and whoops now they're dating and both of them are kinda surprised by it.

Normally will they won't they tension comes from like, self doubt that so and so REALLY likes me. Like more of a self esteem risk. And while they have a little bit of that, the two of them are such wholesome little sweethearts that more than anything it feels like they're just afraid of messing up their friendship if things don't work out. They really, legitimately don't want to risk their friendship.

So now they're dating and like instead of being purely excited they're actually more freaked out than before.
When he asked his friend if he thinks in words that got me hard cos I don't.
edit: I just realised this could be read sexually but I meant emotionally. Ok. Just making sure we all understand.

Does anyone know where the name Skip and Loafer comes from? I feel like I'm missing something obvious but I'm not sure what it is.
    re: latest chapter
I really hope this doesn't mean the story's going to get all stressful and stuff, because to this point I've been enjoying how relatively lighthearted it is -- not all the time, but it's stayed clear of the obvious relationship-based plotlines so far which I appreciate.

random guess about the name from someone who hasn't seen it, I assume loafer is referring to the type of shoes, which coincidentally seem to be standard dresscode in a lot of Japanese schools if anime is anything to be believed.

Everything fun about the show was the crazy shit. After the yakuza arc ended, it just became Generic Hobby Show, cutting past the golf which they did offscreen more often than not to make more time for the crowd to titter about how pretty and cute the protagonists are. It's also incredibly weird that they had entire episodes about learning the basics of golfing from random high schoolers when the premise was that she was hustling professionals and engaging in organized crime cyber golfing against people with magical powers a few weeks ago.

I really enjoyed binging all of Kaguya but the ending felt just a tad fanservicey in the way they kinda
brushed off the family conflict Kaguya has in favor of a seemingly happy ending

It felt like they were setting stuff up they couldn't get to do that particular thread is left dangling like, seems like a big obstacle for their plan but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Would not surprise me if we get a movie or something about what happens next, but the ending felt fairly definitive. Kudos to actually having an ending. I'm assuming the manga is different/ongoing.

The Kaguya's family plotline is dealt with more out of a feeling of obligation from the author to tie up the plot threads before finishing the series than because it's good though, I think. Doesn't utilize the romantic comedy strengths of the series at all.

Finished the original run of Gargantia. There's still two OVA episodes to go. But the one beach episode was the only real offender in the series. The rest of it is rather good. Has a good conclusion, will see where the OVAs go. Usually I find the emotionally stunted pilot boy archetype kind of boring (yes you too IBO). But Ledo's arc of figuring out what the point of living is coming out of a full bred as soldiers system in an unending war was well done and had progress to it.

True, but it does use the "scheming, plotting and attempting to outwit" strength of the series (and the reason I started reading it in the first place) to it's fullest. And it puts the "reality is often different from what we expect it to be" theme front and center. Overall, that arc isn't great, but it's not bad either.
