The main strike against Macross is it doesn't have the Robotech OST.

It's a dealbreaker. The walk away type.

I hate Robotech's dub, and I only even watch the first part based on Macross when I rewatch it, but I can't do anything else, because I've listened to Macross ost and that's not my childhood, ok?

Fortunately I don't have any issue with any other other Macross series since I didn't grow up watching mutated versions of them with better soundtracks.

Yeah, I'm really relieved I didn't watch Robotech growing up, so I was able to fully appreciate Macross.

But then, I also grew up on the DiC Sailor Moon, and I knew something wasn't right, and quickly hunted down the truth, thanks in no small part to the ancient Ms. Haruna's Classroom.

Macross sound track is pretty good you know.

I'm just 42 years old now and Robotech is one of the first exposures to anime AND sci fi AND romantic drama wee Morninglord ever had, all of which are things I am a massive fan of now. That's a lot of nostalgia to fight. I don't think anything could survive.

I'm quite aware its entirely personal.

I'll be honest Macross has a tendency to shape my life in weird ways.

Not only did Robotech craft three of my primary interests as an adult (four if you include taste in action scene soundtracks), Frontier instantly instilled in me a deep primal need for that goddam squishy frog phone.

Seriously I need this thing why hasn't anyone invented it yet god GIVE IT TO ME

I have not yet managed to track down a sub of original macross to get this experience myself but I'll bet I have a similar reaction, I am very attached to the robotech soundtrack as well.

I have a similar thing with Dragonball.

I grew up watching the Spanish dub, which kept the original Japanese score.

Rewatching the English dub and it just felt wrong, even though I know there's tons of people who love it.

Rock the Dragon does slap though.

Definitely hard to shake your first impression. My first serious entry into DBZ was Abridged, so even after watching the latter part of Kai and all of Super it's hard to shake those voices.

Rock the Dragon is great, but I prefer Chala Head Chala.

I'm kind of a sucker for a thing having multiple variants of a song and I really like when they use an instrumental version of Chala Head Chala.

One of the little bits about Kimagure Orange Road that I appreciate is that it's made before the harsher content restrictions on anime, so its free to let its teenagers do some more teenager-y things on occasion, like sneaking beers out of vending machines and drinking in the park.

The story certainly isn't perfect - primarily that The Other Girl is just totally not compelling as a romantic rival so the only reason stopping the main two from getting together is the protagonist not wanting to hurt anyone's feelings - but it's got a lot of charm to it still.

So a second Berserk chapter dropped when I wasn't looking and now I guess it resumes again in August

The second one is even more like... I can see the loss of Miura on the page, artistically. Both in terms of the raw quality of the art, and the page layout and paneling. It is not bad, not at all! I wouldn't call it anything approaching bad! But you can see it, y'know?

Still, stuff is capital-h Happening in that story again, and I remain immensely curious where it goes and how it ends

I VAGUELY remember seeing Robotech as a wee one but my strongest memories of it come from the novels. Loved reading them and I appreciated getting all of one 'season' in one collection-style book.

As for Sailor Moon, I'm so used to both versions of the original anime that I end up bouncing off of Crystal for not being long enough if that makes sense. Yeah, Crystal's supposed to be a faithful retelling of the manga but no Doom Tree and Moonlight Knight? No thanks.

It really is just the soundtrack. There's nothing else redeeming it.

If I walked outside and there were literal aliens streaming down from the skies in giant spaceships blowing up everything and this wasnt playing

Yeah, YGO was a different beast at the beginning. This for example was the first 'game'.

Having just read the first few chapters of yu-gi-oh, it is _amazingly_ rough on the villains.
First one: bully gets driven insane and "the only thing in your head is the illusion of avarice", so he's forever going to be rummaging around in a pile of leaves that he thinks is money.

Second one: TV producer tries to set up fake bullying scenario, gets cursed so that now he sees everything through a censorship-mosaic filter. (and about 10x8 pixels' worth of it based on the picture we see of his eyes, which is a _very_ low-res way to see the world).

Third one: bully makes him listen to bad karaoke, is punished by having the sound of his heart become deafeningly loud so it's all he can hear.

Fourth: as mentioned, prison escapee holding friend as hostage, gets burned alive. Not clear if he lives or dies, though.

Fifth: fake fortune-teller; this one is relatively mild, he just gets exposed as a fraud.

And then someone gets literally blown up with explosives, someone has their face turn into a jigsaw puzzle and fall apart, someone is stung (to death?) by a scorpion, it is really not any good being a bad guy in this world, sheesh.

Something to note was that one of the Millennium Item owners, Shadi, was introduced during this pre-DM era. If you're aware of the character, you can probably guess that his intro here was a mite more brutal then the DM-anime's take.

Crystal is largely treated as a snoozefest, there's a reason you're seeing the classic series pushed more than the new one. Only the most diehard fans enjoy the remake, and even they begrudgingly admit the classic is better.

One thing that struck me about OG Yu-Gi-Oh was how the people who played Yami's games straight, no cheating or similar, then when they lost they'd just...lose. That's it, they lose the game and retain their sanity or soul, though that last one was dragon kid's own damn fault and he deserved it. It was only the people who didn't follow the rules that got mind crushed. I think the one exception to this is the convict and that was because it wasn't a Shadow Game, it was just Yami teaching the find out part of someone fucking around.

In a lot of ways, the games themselves were a test of the person's character. Penalty Games weren't meant to be a punishment for losing a game but for being such a scumbag that you couldn't even pass up the chance to cheat in a game that was just as dangerous to Yami-Yugi as it was to you. Case in point was the first game. Remember that the end goal was to get as much cash as you could without stabbing yourself. Naturally the bully's guts started to fail him after a few attempts and he ultimately decided that he'd just use the knife on YY instead. Thus he earned having his sanity voided for the foreseeable future.

In the case of the convict, it was just that YY didn't NEED his magic to give the guy a very bad day at the end which was probably the point of the story; dark magic is only PART of what makes YY dangerous to mess with. Remember at the end of the day...
...YY was a Pharaoh. Not surprising he'd have less scruples about ending someone seeing the time-period he came from.

For as terrifying as Yami could be I think Shadi beats him out for sheer levels of fucked up AND fucked around though with less "found out" than could have happened which was actually surprising considering his interaction with Yugi/Yami was like:
Shadi: "Okay I'm gonna put your friends in mortal danger to decide whether or not I need to kill you, losing this game will kill you, winning will kill you friends, and also I'm not going to accept my first loss so I'm going to invade your soul directly and learn all your secrets by force even though this could destroy said soul if I decide to wreck you."
    Yami: "Tell me more."
