Ok I have watched a few episodes of Spy x Family and my initial thoughts are that if anything bad happens to Anya I will burn this world to the ground.

I don't really know anything about Gundam, so I don't know if it has any, like, greater relevance in the franchise, but 'The Witch from Mercury' is a killer subtitle.

This is stated to be a new au* so it's conceivably a really good jumping on point**

*in the past at least one of these aus has been rolled back in to what is considered the Main Canon but retroactively in a way that doesn't matter if you don't want it to

**the staff working on it have had some absolute bangers and some real misses, and their prior gundam work is generally well received if slightly divisive

Okouchi got his start working on Turn A (either you love it and it's your favorite or you don't care) and wrote the truly horrific 08th ms team novelization

He's mostly known for a little show called Code Geass

I personally didn't like Turn A as much as most people seem to but its not bad, I just didn't care for some of the decisions of the plot/characters

I don't disagree with this! I just didn't find myself impressed with it as much as it was built up to be, I guess

sort of turn a spoilers? don't click if you haven't seen it
Also that they never, ever explain why Dianna & Kihel look/talk/basically are exactly the same, I was expecting it to be so intrinsic to the story and then literally its nothing but plot contrivance

this is just a thing tomino does
sometimes you don't need an explanation if the imagery is powerful enough, this is half of the newtype shit in UC

also in a much more direct sense dianna and kihel look the same because people are often drawn to a Certain Kind of Person and this is a vision of what that might look like in tomino's eyes

I'd only really seen UC up to Zeta, and then the Toonami classics like G, Wing, and 08th MS Team, and honestly felt pretty darn good about Turn A (I'd say Unicorn is more of a Final Boss of needing UC background knowledge than Turn A is)

It's kind of like how knowing tokusatsu and certain Mecha series makes Evangelion's context a bit more ideal but it also just stems from the basic plot that like, 0079 Gundam and most early Super Robot shows have in a superficial enough way that most of Evangelion's arc works devoid of say, Ultraman or Ideon

i think there is definitely a break point where you have Enough Context for it to be As Resonant As It Intends To Be, yeah but you can definitely keep going for a bigger impact

    i specifically think that
the reveal of the dark history, and how we just keep doing this to ourselves over and over, hits harder when you've seen the full scope of what gundam can be, from victory to X and everything in between

Oh Hathaway I've seen. Must have been waiting for Narrative to hit an easier streaming service and forgot it existed, I'll get around to it one of these days.

Victory has some excellent early bits and then turned me off so completely I just skipped to the end. X I think I only found out even existed relatively recently, definitely not one of the ones that comes up in these conversations much.

Apropos of the Yugioh discussion: The best Children's Card Game duel in the original series to me was Yugi vs Kaiba in Battle City. This was the one where it honestly felt like the strategy of the game itself was best used. None of the cards feel like asspulls, it really feels like both of them sat down, considered who they were facing, what cards their opponents had and built decks both to facilitate their own cards but counter the opposing strategies. Way more satisfying than the Orichalcos arc's abundence of "nuh-uh" cards.

There's a major villain in Zeta Gundam known as "The Man From Jupiter" so it seems to be playing off that.

Gundam walks a fine line between hype and melodrama. Sometimes it can be a bit too serious for its own good, but its generally pretty grounded scifi like the Expanse. Space is scary, and humans in space are still jerks.

The invention of molinosfsky jamming for example is because the creators did a ton of research on modern weapons and knew that line of sight combat and melee needed justification.
