sometimes the bad guys don't respect the transformation sequence. it happened a few times in gaim

Also, there are times when the sequence blocks attacks trying to interrupt it.

There's also a whole bunch of transformation sequences that get weaponized - Kamen Rider Blade's shoots out an energy card when he transforms that then comes back and over him to complete the transformation, and there's a few times at least where it proceeds to plow straight into the monster and send them ass over teakettle. Kamen Rider W's super mode has a bird thing that will actively attack people to create some space for them to power up, etcera.

    god, ga-rei zero

now there's a show i really liked long enough ago and remember juuuust enough of that i'm like "let's never revisit this to doublecheck, maybe"

some extremely fun weapon design though

I don't remember anything all that objectionable. A few baths and such, but nothing out of the ordinary or even pushing it for anime. It did run very afoul of the censors repeatedly, but that was more for violence, and even that was more because of its particular broadcast channel. Is that a sword stabbing into someone underneath that hazy green cloud? Well, it's censored, so nobody will ever know!
I think someone here recommended Ga-Rei-Zero and also said not to look anything up about it, so almost all of us are going in totally blind as far as I know.

Sounds like something I'd do. I wish the original pre-air promo stuff was still around, but alas, it's lost to time. You can still find bits and pieces here and there, which is amusing in retrospect.
    jnw4pQL.jpg

Genuine episode #01 (yes, the first) spoilers
It claimed it was going to be an original show starring the super teens above, fighting monsters and such. Then, in the last three minutes of the episode, the antagonist from the manga shows up and gruesomely massacres every single one of them.

By the time you reach episode 3
She's actually the protagonist, and we're in her bloody Shakespearean action-tragedy origin story.

    Regarding the above spoilers
I'm still bummed we didn't get that series about the Ghostbusters-esque team, it looked neat.

There are certain episodes of Sailor Moon and Pretty Cure where the transformation sequence is skipped for time and/or because it was already shown and you can see that from the other characters' perspectives it happens instantly.

I kinda like that in DBZ, the allowance for transformation power-ups that take forever get explained away by the fact that both Goku and Vegeta are arrogant shitlords who are perfectly willing to let the world burn if it means they get a "good fight".

Tonight on AniMenagerie...The Rolling Girls was completely normal and made perfect sense, Megalobox talked about scorpions and dogs more than boxing, and The Slayers accidentally defeated the big bad in episode 10/26. You know what that means, right? Time for hijinks!!!

Famously you don't want to interrupt the toqger transformation sequence

    There's a warning for a reason!!!!

If you do interrupt it, you get run over by a train.

    Lol what.

I'm familiar with the "actually very fast" and "some kind of barrier" versions. Never heard of a train running someone over for it.

There was a train themed season.

    It was supposedly quite awful.

Having actually watched that season, it was pretty good and had some incredible gags, like the mooks turning up with a whole bunch of sight-related objects to meance the heros... including one who's just holding a crystal ball. No idea where you're getting the quite awful from. (I mean, Super Sentai has never been high literature, and the last series i thought were genuinely really strong were Gokaiger and Shinkenger, but this was def one of the less bad things).

Oh, and one of the Villians had the same VA as LELOUCH VS BRITANNIA, plus a weaponized top hat (it was a boomerang, Oddjob style)

The train incident is entirely correct however.

I didn't watch it myself, and don't watch much sentai in general, so don't take that as a serious opinion. That was just my impression from how much people seemed to haaaaaaaaate it when it started airing for how childish it was. And then all I heard of it after that was things like the giant train dick, and had Horie Yui voicing a selfie robot.

    Spoilers for an old thing:

    It was childish because
The heros were all kids aged up. They acted like children because they WERE children. It was pretty fucked up!
. It also honestly had some of the best villains, who were a real fun crew.

Also the sixth ranger had this habit of dramatically turning up playing a harmonica, except one time he couldn't find it, so he turned up dramatically playing... a recorder. Que everyone else dying of laughter.

I will say that one of the big issues with TQGer is it was one of the first series to start really leaning into "The Red Ranger and also a few other bozos" that's been haunting the series for a while. It's actually weirdly funny - recent Kamen Riders have gotten more and more team-based or at least multi-rider based, while recent Sentai have gone hard on having the Red Ranger being the only one who actually matters.

Gaim's biggest crime is that his mid-season upgrade fucking slaps. Just excellent visual design all around, it looks great, and even the DJ turntable gun is weridly charming and works somehow.

And then his ultimate form is just whoooooof. Yeah.

I mean, i get it was based on a warlord but it's still an awful design, especially after Kachidoki arms

I tend to like the less good Super hero hour shows. Gimme that Lupinranger.

Or I'll die on the hill that Wizard was good actually.

In anime news, Yakuza babysitter reminds me that I kinda love Kirishima's design. It does a lot of work and with just some heavier lines and shadowing it transitions into a good menacing face

I'm trying to think of the final forms i do like, post W...

Builds looks good when it's in action, didnt hold up in stills very well. Ex-Aid's Hyper Muteki was actually suprsingly good in motion as well. Zero-One's Zero-Two form was also great. OOO's has a couple of it's 3-match combos look great

most of the rest are dogshit though, just waay too hard on sticking bits and colors on and blaargh.

Alright, watched the first two episodes of Fuuto PI. It's very well done as far as being a sequel to Kamen Rider W. Every dumb side character I could think of showed up, and several more I'd forgotten about made appearances. The little graphics effects for the beginning and end of episodes are there too. Everything looks great, very well animated. But...the characters look ridiculously 'anime' in comparison to the actual people. Phillip has goofy green hair, plus Shotaro and Terui look like they should be in a boy band. (Only Phillip should look like that, come on.)

In another move that's too anime, they added a hot lady who gets naked once an episode, because the show killed off every female character except for one that's both plain looking and happily married. She looks completely out of place compared to everyone else, even with their more exaggerated new designs. Also, none of the original actors are involved to do the appropriate voices, not even the side characters that should really be easy to get. They did bring back the announcer, which is nice.

Everything considered, it seems like it'll be a fun show. But the very 2020s way it's being adapted isn't exactly what I was hoping for. I guess I'm willing to live with it to see animated versions of Santa-chan and Watcherman.

Toei seems to act like the all red one is, even though the Dino form got introduced at the traditional spot for a super form. To be fair, it does make thematic sense

OOOs is just generally weird, though.

Space Sheriff Gavan actually made the whole transformation bit in episodes longer by showing it quick first, then the narrator winds back the clock and shows off the whole thing properly.

As for watching Gaim, it's good though you can probably skip it's crossover film with Wizard. DEFINITELY don't watch the Kamen Rider Taisen movie that the Gaim/ToQger crossover special led to as it's just the dumbest. It makes the Showa Riders complete jackasses, retcons part of Faiz's ending (though that DOES get followed up in the sequel film and more importantly it's epilogue mini-series), and had a 'vote for which side wins!' ending which pretty much both blow.
    A flower? SERIOUSLY?!

You will wanna watch Gaim's solo movie though even with it's bizarre premise of a setting since it actually ties into the show's ending.

The wizard crossover movie is great

The issue with the Movie War crossovers however is that half of them deals with the aftermath of the previous Rider show's ending, acting as an epilogue of sorts. It's thus hard to recommend them seeing as they'll end up spoiling the events of the previous show.

For the most part. Toei at times doesn't really keep continuity in mind when it comes to the Rider films. OOO's part of the Double/OOO film springs to mind.
