Speaking from experience, showing someone Wing as their first Gundam series is a good way to turn them off the franchise altogether. 00 would be much more entertaining. War in the Pocket is also pretty good for first-time viewers, as it's short, in the UC timeline, and doesn't require a bunch of backstory.

I dunno it was one of the most popular shows on Toonami for a reason.

If you're watching Gundam because you subscribe to Tomino's pretty hamfisted view on the horrors of war it might be a bad start, but most people not in their 30s probably do just like cool robots. Wing robots are still pretty damn cool.

Also Heero makes a great role model of how not to be a successful person. 'See this guy, kids? Never be like him.'

Then again Seed is one of the most popular shows in the series so who knows.

Maybe Haikyuu? Sports anime should be fitting for viewers of any age.

I'd definitely recommend FMA Brotherhood over AoT, JoJo, or Eva. Way less stuff that's out of their age range or potentially problematic, and unlike the others it's actually good.

Also second the Mob Psycho rec. It's so good. Potentially One Punch man too, at least for the older one. It can get gross at times with like, ripping out a crab man's organs, but it's really good.

Jujutsu Kaisen has plenty of cool fights and what not, and is probably appropriate at least for the older one. At least as appropriate as the original 3 asked about.

I loved Little Witch Academia. If they liked Bofuri and Eizouken they might enjoy that.

I have definitely known twelve year olds who would be uncomfortable with the level of gore in say, JJBA

Whereas I was watching Robocop and slasher movies when I was like nine

There's a pretty wide range, and it's largely down to the individual in question

@djmitchella Consider watching The Vision of Escaflowne. It's a show that has a bit of everything in it - it's an isekai anime with a female protagonist, giant robots in a magical setting, romance and political intrigue and a Yoko Kanno soundtrack.

It's going to have less squicky stuff in it than Evangelion or Attack on Titan and less content that is going to generate awkward conversations.

Wing is Big Stupid as well but the sudden and violent director change really throws that show off halfway through

There is SOMETHING there and then it meanders for way too damn long before figuring out what it is

Yeah but the context was 'is this good for a teen to watch,' and based on the fact that it was wildly popular at the time of airing, seems likely

It only did okay in Japan when it released though. So I'm more likely to attribute its "wild popularity" in the US due to the fact anime was relatively new and unknown to the country besides Pokemon and Dragon Ball Z. Novelty counts for a lot.

That isn't the case anymore, people have options and Wing is very likely not going to be their first introduction to anime in general.

It was definitely an intro to mecha, yeah, and that's basically a dead genre on TV right now so it could still easily serve that purpose

If it hadn't been for 08th MS Team being on Toonami after Wing finished its run I would have written the entire franchise off as a bunch of nonsensical dialoguing broken up by cool-looking robots. I had to program my VCR to record Tenchi Universe because Wing would knock me out and I would sleep through the first half of the next show. To this day I've only seen the second half of the series once, whereas I've watched the original MSG upwards of ten times in as many years.

I never saw Gundam Wing back then, so I started watching it on CR, and agreed that it loses steam pretty fast. Any time Relena isn't on screen is time wasted.

I watched the opening parts of Eva when I was 15ish and all the ways it is NOT a standard mecha show confused and frustrated me. It did stay with me though, and when I watched it like a decade later, I LOVED it then. I agree Gundam stuff is going to be much more digestible for teens.

My first exposure was the SNES fighting game, which looked super cool to me at the time.

Then I saw an episode on TV and it was one of those middle ones where I think everybody was taking turns piloting Epyon for shits and giggles or something, and just screaming about how insane it was making them.

I feel like I got the full experience.

I watched eva as a middle teen with friends, it was mysterious and cool. I already knew of anime from robotech VHS's and dragonball and other things, and was big into giant robot stuff, I don't recall if gundam wing was airing yet but it might have been. I was fascinated by eva, mostly there for the robots but they kept doing episodes just about how depressed shinji was instead of showing cool robot fights, and honestly that was very relateable and important for me. A bit of "this character and the person who wrote them understand these same feelings I have."

It might have been the first time I saw media that resonated with my personal experience of existing in that way, and that felt fairly important to me at the time, knowing that my depression wasn't unique.

Gundam Wing's plot is lightning fast and makes no sense while it's characters make baffling decisions so they can force a new twist in cause it's Char clone has to go through 100 episodes of MSG and Zeta plus the CCA movie in 50 episodes. But the cool robots are really fucking cool and back when it first aired it your only anime options was Gundam Wing, Tenchi Muyo, or reruns of DBZ and Sailor Moon so the nostalgia factor is huge.

I always compare transforming gundams to macross mecha and they fall well short of that standard of coolness

I think Gundam Wing is perfectly fine for one's first Gundam show if they're in middle or high school.

But if you're a goddamn adult already sitting down looking to get into the Gundam franchise, there are so many better recommendations for first viewing.

I know I watched Elfen Lied and read Tsukihime and just generally consumed all kinds of strongly questionable anime shit like that when I was 12-15, but that was also very much behind my parents' backs and tbh probably did a lot to fuck my dumb impressionable brain up
