Last night on Animenagerie we watched the first two episodes of Zombie Land Saga and Big O, and continued the first season of Slayers.

In Slayers, the first episode we watched involved the group dressing up to put on a fake wedding, and the second was them joining a traveling theater troupe.

So clearly the theme last night was SHOWTIME!!

    Chainsaw Man chapter 103:
There's something about the paneling in this series that's so deliberate it feels almost cinematic. I love it.

The last panel with the pulled back shot with the cage with a feather in it wasn't symbolic at all.

Off compared to what? Seemed pretty Denji to me.

My main question is what happened to Nayuta and the dogs?

Yu Yu Hakusho may have made a disappointing veer into Dragonball Z during the Dark Tournament arc, but the one that follows it seems to be making a play for JoJo territory, which is an encouraging sign.

Oh hey, Houshin Engi just got added to the SJ app.

Read it. It's a really great, weird, and unique series from the 90s that I think is super underrated.

Damn, it was a little unclear to me because Power was talking about "finding" her again or whatever.
When a devil is reincarnated they lose their memories. Her is the future Power devil
Denji and Power made a contract in the dumpster that Denji would find the Blood Devil after it reincarnates and becomes friends with them again

Power the only person, devil or otherwise, dumber than Denji. The singular person in the universe where Denji can credibly argue he's the "smart" one.

Just for funsies I went and read the latest chapter of Chainsawman while knowing almost nothing about it besides it being weird.

I got the same sense of disjointment as I did from Beastars when that was a thing. Like the world was operating under a set of rules that were perfectly cohesive but also alien to actually understand. And it's not even the powers or devils or anything, but more the characters themselves and how they interact with others.

I look forward to it being awkward to talk about due to everyone watching it at different paces and then for it to be memory holed 1.5 weeks later

yeah chapter 102 would have probably been the most ridiculous one to hop in on

    103 is weirdly coherent

I did look back at the previous two and those did not give me the same disjointed feeling. Like I said, anything to do with powers or devils doesn't trigger that feeling, it's how characters interact with each other and the world that can cause it.

You know it's one thing when a 13 year old is running around a mobile suit facility and shouldn't be there unsupervised, but when the adults just leave a 5 year old to play around in a facility like that........ wtf

Living in a world where nearly a third of the population are being killed by Devils at any given time makes people weird, I think.

you know being afraid of the devils makes them stronger

you know what makes you fearless? drugs and alcohol

Last two episodes of isekai uncle has been creepy shit. "the gag is the uncle is looking like he's committing sexual assault shit while misunderstanding the social situation" in today's episode.
It's a real bummer, since they had the starting episodes show so much promise without needing to play in that space.

Their world has dealt with some weird shit, to be fair. Stuff like, in the span of .0005 seconds everyone in a zip code that was born on a Tuesday drops dead. And the people of that world just have to deal with that.

I highly recommend this, it's a banger and just really good. Also just a really cool depiction of artificial limbs
I'm also convinced this series might actually go all in on the Gundam-as-a-sentient-character idea - we've had strong hints before like in IBO, but I don't think it's coincidence that our heroine spent so long talking to Lfrit and then it worked as well as it did for her

I dunno if anyone else is reading it, but I was tremendously surprised by the turn of events in the most recent Natsuko No Sake. (which, if you aren't reading it, is a pretty great comic about, well, here's the summary:
Natsuko Saeki, a young woman working for an advertising company in Tokyo, returns to her family's home in the countryside. There she finds her brother, Yasuo, searching for a "phantom" rice seed called tatsunishiki, rumored to create a new form of sake. He finds the seeds, but after he passes away suddenly, Natsuko quits her job and begins working at the sake brewery to realize Yasuo's dream of making the best sake in Japan.

I asked a while back about stories that teach you how real things work, and if you want to know about how to make sake, this is for you. (also, if you want to know about how to convince the rest of the farmers in your village that organic farming is the way to go, or deal with workplace drama and disagreements between boss/employee, or how to handle shops that don't want to stock your product, or how to generally get your life together).

    Latest issue, though:
after 108 previous chapters where it has been pretty keen that the only man for Natsuko is Matsuo, the god of sake, there is a very very tiny step forwards in the one of the incredibly low-key possible romantic sub(sub)plots. I have no idea if it's going to continue or if it was a one-off thing after the conversation they had, but I gasped aloud when _anything at all_ happened because it really did not feel like it was going to be that sort of comic.

Plus the scene where she's totally trolling her father the next day:
    bazham11v6o1.png
    fvn32vo2in68.png

I'm also genuinely not sure how that one's going to end, because it feels like there are a lot of different ways the sake making could end up and pretty much any of them would feel plausible by this point, which is really refreshing.

Also not sure if anyone's reading Koi wa Hikari (by the author of Bonnouji, for context), but, again, most recent issue I said "holy shit" out loud because while that particular bit of the plot has been very obviously bubbling away under the surface for basically the whole story so far, it was not something that I expected to actually get to happen.

(which wasn't helped by the fact that the previous translators got about halfway through and then stopped three years ago, so I wasn't expecting it to get to the end at all -- it's not there yet, but there's only a few chapters to go so I _really_ hope the current folks can complete it. I still hold out hope someone else will pick up Amanchu! but I'm not optimistic)

speaking of manga, jeez the character writing of skip and loafer is just so well done. Everyone is written believably, even when they're fucking things up you can see how from their perspective they're trying to do things the best they can.

    ch 44
Yasaka got introduced a couple chapters ago as like a shameless flirt, a lot of the other girls don't like her and she plainly kinda has the reputation of a bit of a skank. She seemed like she might be getting introduced as an antagonist who'd show up and try to break up our main kids' new relationship, but then we see her morning routine this chapter and in only a couple of pages she makes sense. Unlike her bubbly forward personality at school she wakes up looking exhausted, her bedroom has shit scattered everywhere, her cell phone screen is all cracked, when she goes to the kitchen no one else is there but there's cash (but no note!) left on the counter. Her checking her cell phone first thing and seeing messages from like 6 different boys isn't her being a player, it's her plainly being depressed and alone in her home life and trying to get approval and affection elsewhere instead. Instead of being a shoujo manga esque romantic rival you're instead like aww man, poor kid.

Our protagonist Mitsumi is not as good looking as Yasaka but her family is super wholesome and supportive, and so like she knows that healthy love and support is something she deserves to get in her relationships. When her boyfriend won't stand up for her the way she thinks he should, she's already like well, if he's not gonna improve then we might have to break up, even though that thought makes me really sad. She's not gonna let herself be undervalued.

But she also doesn't realize that that sort of standard in her personal relationships isn't something that everyone else can afford. She's always gonna have that supportive family that she can fall back on in tough times, and she can trust in her friends to be emotionally supportive too - because those are the kinds of people she surrounds herself with.
But neither Yasaka nor Mitsumi's boyfriend really have that privilege, and even if they did gain more of a support structure around them, it's not something they've learned to expect. Yasaka is at least for now still gonna seek affection from any boy that's interested in providing it even if he might technically be dating someone else, because it's the only affection she gets. Shima's instinct is gonna be to not disrupt the room and to stay friendly even with girls that cast shade at his girlfriend, not because he doesn't care about his girlfriend but just because the way he's learned to deal with people is different than the way Shima deals with people.
