In the past, broadcast was more a vehicle for advertisement, and from my perspective, a pretty minor one at that. What actually mattered were the DVDs. Streaming has certainly changed things, but corporate culture and practices are stuck in their ways, and the pandemic certain still causes havoc on schedules. I do feel like we see a lot less of the infamous TV vs DVD screenshot comparison thingies in the last few years though.

Last night on Animenagerie, we watched the third episode of Big-O!

Which meant we finally got to hear the opening theme song.

And some of us not familiar with the property were told it was a pretty egregious example of just plagiarizing another well-known song.

But I was not prepared for HOW much it just copied Queen's Flash Gordon theme song.

Holy shit, I laugh every time it plays now.

I haven't touched this season after how last went. Seems like it was the right move.

yeah.. I'm probably gonna stop with overlord now. It gets worse every episode.

Oh man I do not miss those days. I have a decent DVD and VHS collection from back then and all of excel saga is like that. Atleast later on the started bundling them all together, the box set for Azumanga Daioh is perfect and even uses the slimmer cases so it doesn't just take up a whole shelf on its own

Compared to the 2000s anime DVDs prices the $800 LOTGH box isn't that bad for what you get.

    Ohhh yeah.

I sometimes reflect on how pervasive an easy anime has become. Same-day, on-demand streaming services with hundreds of shows to choose from for less than $15 dollars a month? Where the fuck was that shit when I was a kid?

When I was comin' up you could barely find any place that would even sell anime. And if you did, it was fucking rip-off expensive. $30 for a VHS tape with three episodes? Of Dragon Ball Z? An anime with over 100 fucking episodes? Fuck off.

Finished the zombie manga "I Am A Hero" over the weekend. I thought it was fascinating and exciting and weird and creative throughout... but that ending was just not it. It ignored all the asides and mythology and questions raised throughout the entire thing to resolve basically nothing except like...
the main character didn't starve to death in an empty city. He was probably alone and vaguely insane for the rest of his sad existence, though. THE END

It's sort of rare for a series to have my attentions so hard for the entire length and then bomb only at the very end. It's unfortunately common for the finale to spiral into a bad last arc that ends badly, but not for a solid last arc to just stop all the good things and replace them with sawdust and nothing.
Sounds like the Xfiles last five minutes?

Or technolyze, which still makes me angry.

Mine was Blue Gender. Decent at least anime featuring people vs giant bugs which had a guy waking up from cryo-sleep seeing how crap the world had gotten since he was put under. I also dug the closing song.

Then the final episode hit and and it just made me turn my back on the whole thing.

the big o model is already up for preorder on bigbadtoystore and goodsmile's USA page, its a little under 70$. on one hand i already have the old soul of chogokin big o figure which is better, on the other hand buy all the big o figures?

They do anime per episode so they can slightly change things to better suit reception. Like if one character ends up way more popular than expected.

But also because it costs 1~200k usd per episode so they often just don't have the up front money to actually afford to do so.

Yeah, we're pretty much waiting for the market to change in regards to anime production. The big money draw use to be selling overpriced boxsets to the hardcore collectors. So the quality of episodes during the official run mattered less. Hell, it was probably easy to market off off because not only were they selling fancy box with some random collector things, but they could also hawk the DVD exclusive footage, while ignoring that almost all of it was done to clear things up.

We'll probably have to wait for some dinosaurs in the industry to move on out of it either via retirement or just keeling over because some people in positions of power really get stuck in their ways. It'll probably change because streaming is giving access to a much bigger market and more revenue, to the point where it's probably dwarfing the income they get from the current market. The other thing is they are competing with gachas now for money from that group. Yes, they had to compete with other anime collectors boxsets from competing companies and collector box sets for videogames. It's just that gacha shit is made up of a ton of predatory practices that are really good at getting people to part with their money and a good chunk of that is limited time only crap, which is also what the whole collector's boxset shit relies on as well. Just neither anime nor traditional video game can sucker people out of money with the lie of "it's just a small purchase," that ends up being a shit ton of purchases, where the buyer knows what the boxset is going to cost at the end of the day. To not get further into this tangent, let's just say anyone that would be making up the market for collectors boxsets, but also gets caught up with gachas shit, is going to be pumping less money in. Them getting into gachas and being a collectors boxset buyer, doesn't mean their income goes up, it just gets divided between more things. This in turn means that market will get anime companies less money now and it'll make other markets more attractive. Markets that might demand better quality for episode debuts.

As for stuff that has aged badly. I'd argue there is a fair bit that made it tot he West that people lapped up. Not because they thought it was good, but because it was what they could get. Also wouldn't be surprised if progress on some social fronts, that was fairly rapid, just sort of resulted in a huge chunk of the library from that period of time moving from A-OK or good into the column of "oh-boy this ages as well as a class of milk left out in a tropical heat and humidity for a day." Like anything that was given a pass despite horrible transphobic, homophobic or sexist (namely the sexual harassment garbage) shit, likely is rightly being called out for that shit. Also seems like much more of the market back then was young and dumb teenagers that wanted more. Now there is a sizable chunk that are adults that have grown up and gotten better taste because it's easier to access the stuff that was good and the library of translated content has only grown.

Sexual harassment is so prevalent in anime. Like even today.

It's an in-universe show made by Nabeshin(Shinichi Watanabe, no relation) about a magical girl and her seven deranged family members that was designed with the intention of making Excel Saga look like Sesame Street.

It is MUCH worse than the not-for-TV episode of Excel Saga.

Didn't say it wasn't still a problem, but now there usual is a fair number of people willing to point out that shit isn't funny. Plus, it does seem like now it's really hard for series that are based entirely around trying to pretend it's funny, to do well in the western market. It goes back to the point that people are no longer consuming this content in mass without giving it any thought.

Shield Hero, the incel's wet dream, is very popular in the West. So are various incest fantasy series. What anime market are you referring to that doesn't have popular, yet disgusting content?

Watamote once again continuing its habit of treating something like a joke for years until suddenly it's not
Tomoko on another one of her random neuron firing journeys, starts with BL shows on TV, switches to thinkin' that maybe their student film should have a romance, but since it's all girls it'd have to be yuri (not you, Yuri). And hey, since our main character is a nice girl inspired by Mako, wouldn't the natural ship be to pair her with a delinquent? Do you think Yoshida would be ok with a kissing scene?

    Meanwhile, Mako:

    bmrp0h50dzkr.jpg

So yeah, Mako making it pretty clear she'd be very not OK with anybody kissing Yoshida, even for a movie. Fans have been pretty sure Mako's had at least a bit of a latent crush on Yoshida for a long time now but this is the first time it's really come to the forefront. Tomoko, being a dummy, still fails to actually put the clues together of course.
