Yeah, we're pretty much waiting for the market to change in regards to anime production. The big money draw use to be selling overpriced boxsets to the hardcore collectors. So the quality of episodes during the official run mattered less. Hell, it was probably easy to market off off because not only were they selling fancy box with some random collector things, but they could also hawk the DVD exclusive footage, while ignoring that almost all of it was done to clear things up.

We'll probably have to wait for some dinosaurs in the industry to move on out of it either via retirement or just keeling over because some people in positions of power really get stuck in their ways. It'll probably change because streaming is giving access to a much bigger market and more revenue, to the point where it's probably dwarfing the income they get from the current market. The other thing is they are competing with gachas now for money from that group. Yes, they had to compete with other anime collectors boxsets from competing companies and collector box sets for videogames. It's just that gacha shit is made up of a ton of predatory practices that are really good at getting people to part with their money and a good chunk of that is limited time only crap, which is also what the whole collector's boxset shit relies on as well. Just neither anime nor traditional video game can sucker people out of money with the lie of "it's just a small purchase," that ends up being a shit ton of purchases, where the buyer knows what the boxset is going to cost at the end of the day. To not get further into this tangent, let's just say anyone that would be making up the market for collectors boxsets, but also gets caught up with gachas shit, is going to be pumping less money in. Them getting into gachas and being a collectors boxset buyer, doesn't mean their income goes up, it just gets divided between more things. This in turn means that market will get anime companies less money now and it'll make other markets more attractive. Markets that might demand better quality for episode debuts.

As for stuff that has aged badly. I'd argue there is a fair bit that made it tot he West that people lapped up. Not because they thought it was good, but because it was what they could get. Also wouldn't be surprised if progress on some social fronts, that was fairly rapid, just sort of resulted in a huge chunk of the library from that period of time moving from A-OK or good into the column of "oh-boy this ages as well as a class of milk left out in a tropical heat and humidity for a day." Like anything that was given a pass despite horrible transphobic, homophobic or sexist (namely the sexual harassment garbage) shit, likely is rightly being called out for that shit. Also seems like much more of the market back then was young and dumb teenagers that wanted more. Now there is a sizable chunk that are adults that have grown up and gotten better taste because it's easier to access the stuff that was good and the library of translated content has only grown.

Sexual harassment is so prevalent in anime. Like even today.

In the content or the industry?

    Yes.

Just remember this - Ken Akamatsu, king of the "abuse is funny" "trope", is currently a member of the Japanese Diet.

I've discovered that there's an isekai based on Dungeons & Dragons called Otherworldly Munchkin. The main character has a book that lets him see the character sheet of anyone he meets, but he also only has 1 hit point due to starting as a Wizard with low Constitution and being cursed with the inability to raise it as he levels up.

So funny pop culture idiosyncrasy between the US and Japan I've noticed is that japanese fantasy game kobolds are usually dog people instead of lizard/dragon people, because of the Wizardry games making them iconic monsters looking like that and being more of a cultural touchstone than later editions of D&D, I think? So for specifically d&d 3.5 kobolds the author has drawn them mostly on model to 3.5 art, except with dog noses. That is fascinating to me lol.

Yeah, Wizardry took the dog-like features of the earliest d&d kobold art, I think even pre-ad&d, and just made them fully canine humanoids, which then took hold in the Japanese zeitgeist compared to the lean into the lizard aspects in later editions of d&d.

Hmm, you're right about the character sheet. The spell descriptions from the chapters I've seen look to be based on 3.5, though, so I guess it's some kind of blending of various editions' rules. For example, in the following a character uses a spell whose range and duration is influenced by character level, which is a thing in 3.5 but not in 5E.

It's also clearly drawing on Pathfinder for the depiction of goblins:

I just started watching Bee & Puppycat on Netflix and one of the characters is voiced by Terri Hawkes, who was the second English-language voice actress for Sailor Moon. As soon as I heard the character's voice I was like "oh wow, where'd they find her?"

Some of the terminology there includes stuff that doesn't exist in any version of D&D as far as I am aware. Either it's weird translation decisions or it's just heavily inspired by D&D in a general sense and the author isn't really drawing from anything super specific.

I'm going to guess they're using the OGL portions and anything extra is made up to not run afoul of lawyers / create the specific (spell) mechanics required for the scene.

The Animate retail shop is listing the cover of the ninth volume of Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe's Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (Sōsō no Frieren) manga, which states on the cover image that the manga is getting an anime. The volume is slated to ship on September 15.

Here is hoping they got a good studio for it.

I could have sworn Frieren's anime was already announced. Good news regardless.

Whoever they get to animate it will have the be a master at using silent pauses with deadpan looks for great effect in a myriad of ways. There is such an overwhelming subtleness to the manga.

    Wait, forbidden?

I saw the OVA of that recently, it's really nice. Just an excellent cozy character building piece. Amuro's voice dosen't quite fit given his VAs age, but also like it's pretty whatever that that's the case, dudes VAing is iconic.

    Would recommend!

If I remember the story right, the Doan's Island episode got removed from syndication runs and foreign localizations of the original series because the animation studio was unhappy with their work on it. There's a lot of goofy off-model shots of the robots if you look closely, I think the animation director was in the hospital during that production or something?

Yeah, the story I heard was Tomino basically blocked that episode from being released internationally because of how badly it turned out.

Which makes a movie that pays homage to how off model the suits are just real funny to me.

And a ton of isekai, far too many to list, though you're welcome to point out noteworthy ones I may have missed.

I am having a very hard time following what is happening in Jujutsu Kaisen now

I did a One Piece on it

Which is to say I stopped reading it entirely until I can read a couple dozen chapters or so in one go and ideally get a better sense for what the fuck is going on
