Tezuka's work holds up, 2003 Astro Boy series was great, they did Magneto and the Genosha arc far better than the comics version of Magneto and Genosha. Not having multiple writers helps with that.

I've been really impressed with Trigun Stampede so far. Very much feels like a second (or third, if we're counting Maximum?) draft of this story, where everything has been refined and streamlined and it all just feels mmmnf so very focused and good.

Even Vash's new design is growing on me...

idk, its not bad, but I feel like it needed room to breathe. like 2-3 episodes more before "oops, all gung-ho-guns". I did not care for episode 5 either

I just finished a rewatch of the original show so that might be clouding my opinion some

The original manga is also still somewhat worth reading, but occasionally you can really feel that it's written in 50s-60s Japan. Lots of badly-aged racism and sexism popping up randomly - the villain for The Greatest Robot on Earth, for instance, is an angry sultan caricature that's IIRC handled much better in Urasawa's Pluto.

episode 5 is bad because of the setup they did to get there

The entire crux of the episode kind of doesn't hold up under a bit of scrutiny. Vash was around in Rollo's life intermittently from their birth and at least one other time, he was probably already familiar with this town's issues; so how in the world would he not notice the human sacrifice stuff going on? Though I wonder if all of the kids offered up went to The Doctor or something else.

Rollo as this version of Monev the Gale was pretty good as the monster of the week I suppose.

I'm watching dub Trigun only, and have mixed feelings on it so far. The writing is... REALLY obvious and too direct. Milly being like, "why don't you shoot and kill people, like a COOL GUY," makes her seem less young and more just a really terrible person. The part that I thought I wouldn't like (the designs and CGI animation) is probably my favorite part so far, though.

I think it's reasonable to assume that Vash was just passing through on occasion.
if it was anyone but vash, yes, I'd agree with that.

but given who vash is, what he is, I cannot believe they would not notice something amiss with that place.

especially with the frigging death cult priest on the dang radio

    It's pretty explicitly:
    https://youtu.be/jgFyCuKoEGA
    at this point.

It also calls back to a chapter or two ago when Naoya told Saki she should also be free to date people besides himself. The twist is she takes his harem instead of finding new boyfriends.

    Re: metropolis.
I saw most of that movie when I was younger without knowing what it was or what anime really was. I think it was on Toonami, but definitely on TV.

Years later I found it on Hulu and watched the whole thing and it blew my mind.

The ending with I can't stop loving you is deeply ingrained at this point.

    Kanojo mo kanojo
Saki's been pretty obviously interested in girls, maybe without noticing it herself, for the whole entire comic, but this being something that is intended as more than a titillating running gag in an otherwise pretty heteronormative romance manga was not something I expected. Still doesn't feel like they're committing to it any more seriously than a gag yet, we'll see. I hope so! Want these kids to figure out both polycules and their sexual orientations.

Yeah, I think smart odds are still on this just being a joke that never gets followed up on, or getting run back next chapter. Still, this does seem less like just a gag than the previous times, so maybe not.

The funniest part about the whole "THE FINAL SEASON" thing is that like

They aren't animating this every week. They know before it airs that it won't get through all the remaining material

    Just...call it season 4?

"FINAL" season makes more money than "season #". They are clearly testing the hypothesis that people will still react to this even if you call three seasons in a row the final one.

Yeah fair but why does it have to be The Final Season Part 3 (Part 1)? Why can't it just be Part 3, and then just call the next part Part 4 instead of Part 3 (Part 2)? Or The Final Season Final Part: The Finale if it does end up being the end?

I had yu yu hakusho as my background work stream for the past month or so and just finished it. I had never seen past the dark tournament growing up on toonami (I think they used to loop back to the start after that at the time).

It was a good watch. Chapter black was phenomenal for high stakes drama. The last 12ish episode arc was the most “wholesome victory lap” I’ve ever seen a story like this take. Really driving home some of the earlier series themes where the show of macho punchmen is actually about healthy masculinity and emotional expression underneath the window dressing. bell hooks must have based the will to change on this show

I managed to make time to see the Kaguya-sama movie on the 15th. It was really good!

It was essentially four episodes cut together focused on one plotline, with side character plotlines alluded to but otherwise neglected for runtime and pacing reasons. The production values were excellent, but not wildly better than the anime itself, which was already very good on an episode to episode basis.

I'm surprised there are so many anime movies getting movie theater releases. There were maybe a dozen people in the theater when I watched Kaguya-sama.

There's been a bunch of anime movies at my local theater recently.
    One Piece Red
Tensei Slime: Scarlet Bond (missed this. It only ran for a week and I thought I'd have more time to see it).
    Kaguya-sama
Demon Slayer movie 2 in March
    Makoto Shinkai's Suzume in April

The Demon Slayer movie coming out in 3 weeks is the last 2 episodes of the Entertainment district arc plus the first episode of the Swordsmith Village arc cut together. That's two double length episodes though, so the movie should be almost two hours. I wonder if it's worth seeing with the new season proper starting in April.

Crunchyroll (so essentially Sony films) has been doing a lot of big-ticket anime peddling, shoot they've even led the box office on some quieter weekends in the doldrums between major studio blockbusters -- I wanna say Demon Slayer and JJK0 both held #1 or #2 spots for at least a few weeks in their respective release windows

We're long past the days when I originally saw Spirited Away in a dingy university theater in 2002 as its original US release
