I just found out that could have been a The Stars My Destination adaption but the rights holders didn't want to do an adaption, which makes me sad.
    Still awesome show though.

Oh so recently the FMA mangaka's newest manga Yomi no Tsugai introduced a Ethiopian/Japanese character and it made me wonder... this surely can't be the first black mixed race Japanese character in a manga right? But I can't think of any others off the top of my head. I can think of a small number of manga that have black characters, and an even smaller number that have black Japanese characters (who are almost always immigrants or 1st generation descendants of immigrants), quite a lot of manga that have mixed race Japanese characters (usually white), but none where the non Japanese parent is black.

Of course I know a some people in this thread have read way more manga than me, so I'd be curious if someone knows of other examples.

the only anime (which was based off a manga so I assume it was the same there) I can recall off the top of my head that shows multiethnic japanese people beyond half-white-european/american characters is Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken, there's a lot of ethnic diversity in that setting's interesting speculative near-future japanese society.

    Nier: Automata Ver1.1a episode 5 check-in.

    General notes:
-As predicted, Pascal shows up. Easily one of the best characters in the game, even haters like 9S are swayed a bit talking to him.
-I never really considered the similarities between the Adam/Eve duo as compared to the 2B/9S one, but the show is really shoving that to the forefront.
-The machine village theme is an incredible ear worm.
-"Nines" huh? Doubt that'll catch on...

    Superfan/franchise commentary:
-Very nice new origin content for Pascal. Who knew his awakening was tied to Emil so closely?
-Kaine! That hack into Nier Replicant fanservice was another big pop off for me, hearing Emil's theme smacked me right in the face with feelings. There was the library as well, which is the second time they've shown it (well ahead of where you end up seeing it in the game near the end of routes C/D). They even showed the Emil centipede from that near endgame quest and the Emil weapon boss fight from Replicant (including a human version of that other kid-turned-weapon)!
-So the episode after I noted they were sticking extremely close to the game material, they went off book a bit this time. Instead of meeting Pascal's representative at the amusement park, they skipped the first meeting and went to the first time the Resistance asks you to meet as a favor. I guess it makes sense as this 9S is so hostile, he almost certainly would have killed that greeter on sight, white flag or not, without the introduction and mission aspect to it. They also have the slide up and running, which doesn't exist in the game until A2 helps them make it in route C/D.
-Geographically speaking, Emil's secret area is hidden in a pipe that's only accessible after the ground breaks apart later on in the story. I'm fairly sure this tree with Emil's face (core?) isn't in the game world at all. Interestingly, this was NOT the Lunar Tear spot that hits you with Kaine's theme, probably we'll still see that at some point.
-The route depicted in the show suggests that the village is close to the mall, which it is not, really. I don't think there's even a shortcut between the two? The hole in the ground is in the dead center in the game, while in this they're suggesting a different placement (but it might actually be a different hole, since that tree is new content, I think).
-They didn't meet Emil's head in the mall, but I guess they still might do that. It will most likely not be the same scene if they do see it there, since they now have a huge amount of context for what Emil is that they did not have through the bulk of the game's storyline.
-I think we're going to get more of the "what happened" aspect to the tragedy that happens in Route C/D with the Machine village, based on how they're expanding the material here. The game keeps the events pretty mysterious and unexplained, just a series of horrible occurrences without justification or explanation, but I think we'll actually see things develop in the show (presuming those events still occur).

Exact ethnicity is never really mentioned, but Haikyu has an Afro-Japanese character as a star player on an opposing team.

I remember being sadly impressed that they just drew him as a completely normal looking black guy, and no one ever mentioned any "super powered african athleticism" or any other kind of Eyeshield 21 bullshit

The added material in the anime is so good that I think it's outclassing the game.

I got about a third through the count of monte cristo before I ended up putting it down.

That's about where I stopped as well. What isn't obvious about the book is that it's five volumes, and it did not need to be that long. A lot of word count is basically the Count showing off how rich he is, in a way that's not particularly interesting. Like, I get it; the Count can afford to just buy a house, you can just say that the Count bought a house instead of going through the details.

What isn't obvious about Gankutsuou is that it's an actual adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo. They didn't just go "Guy takes horrible revenge on people who wronged him, that's close enough, let's slap the title Count of Monte Cristo on the box." No, the plot of the anime is remarkably close to the book, just with a sci-fi theme (and not taking five volumes).

Well, hopefully everyone has it out of their system by the time it's on, and everyone can argue over how bad the ending is instead.
(I actually have no idea how it ends, but I've heard people weren't happy.)

I've noticed something interesting about Crunchyroll subtitles... anything that's more mainstream tends to localize honorifics, a la "Elder Brother" in Automata, while more niche "otaku" shows like Bocchi tend to use them literally, a la "onee-chan".

Is there a preference between the two?

From what I understand, a lot of decision making in translation/localizations choices comes from "how much cultural info can the target audience be reasonably expected to know?".

It's an interesting problem, because on the one hand anime has been available in other languages for multiple decades (implies familiarity with idiosyncrasies of the Japanese language for experienced fans), and on the other it's more popular than ever before (means more new people are watching and may not be as familiar).

I think it's safe to say anyone watching Nier Automata knows what nii-san means, especially given how massively popular it is with cosplayers, so maybe it's just up to the respective editor.

Personally I always localize honorifics on the stuff I edit, because it means you can be more creative instead of just slapping the honorific into the subs and calling it a day. It's especially important to think up alternatives if you'll be dubbing the show, or else you get awkward things like the Persona 3/4 scripts.

It can definitely get a little weird when translated depending on context. Like regularly calling someone "Elder brother" in English would be strange in most contexts, but "big brother" would be a lot more normal.

"Elder brother" makes me think the original was something stuffy like "兄上".

One pretty unexpected localisation was Gouki to Akuma in 1994. Like who is that for?

It throws me a little bit when I hear a short sentence and the very limited amount of japanese I understand tells me mostly what was said, but the subtitles come out different.
Often it's things like someone calling someone brother, but the subtitles filling it in by using their actual name.
Or catchable english words translated into different english words.
Like Chainsaw Man's "buddy" became partner in the crunchy subs. I know it's more what an english speaker would be used to hearing called partner, but I don't think it needs to be recontextualized. Manga translation left it buddy.

Maybe we could do a poll of our own or something, but my top would definitely be Chainsaw Man followed by Spy X Family, then probably Edgerunners or Birdie Wing.

    Good question.

    https://animeawards.moe/results/all?2022

I don't see it in Reddit's either, so probably the former. I think it'd be silly not to include it on that front, though. I'd say if it debuted/primarily aired in 2022 it should be eligible.

I'm surprised how high bocchi is above my other personal top picks in that poll, maybe it has recency bias.

the more characters there are, the harder its been for me to stay interested in one piece. So pretty much constant downward slide after a certain point. But that's just me.
