It's a lot of speculative interpretation surrounding a story that isn't sure what it wants to say and in the end isn't particularly well told.

One thing that isn't speculative at all
the final words of the story, as war ramps up again, is that "if you fight, you live. If you can't fight, you die." That feels pretty on the nose to me, with regards to remilitarization. Because Eren intentionally made himself the bad guy to try to bring about an end to the constant wars, but instead it backfired and radicalized people all over again. Again feels kinda on the nose to me.

I watched a little bit of the anime, went huh, decided to read the manga, read the manga, and just concluded that wow, this isn't very good at all.

Because... Yep, it's really not all that great!

Did AOT do the fuckin' stupid Lost mystery box writing method where the author came up with a bunch of cool mysteries to hint at then went "wait shit I actually have to think of resolutions for these? Aw man"

no, the resolutions to the mysteries are good

it's the resolution to the story that is lacking, even though I can get what they were going for

It is really hard for me to think of popular long running stories, like more than a decade of serialization, that both have a great ending and a wholesome message even when completely divorced from the unique world of the story. Seems the default is to expect the opposite.

Kay Yu has worked on some high profile anime and games. That amount is... yeesh.

You can literally trace this back to Tezuka and his trying to make the financials of TV animation work, where he "balanced" the budgets on the back of the staff and set up a tradition that is going strong decades later.

I appreciate that AoT has a fairly clear anti-war message, even if the execution is a bit wonky. What's questionable is if the author had that in mind from the jump, or just thought it up to pad out the plot more.

    Big ending spoiler.
I just reread it and youve misremembered that scene. Thats showing what the fanatical Paradisians are thinking, and is presented negatively, as a threat. The scene then switches to main characters who are heading to negotiate with them on a mission of peace. Theres then 4 pages of words after that about how they think that attempt will pan out and the hope that the now militirised Paradisians wont just kill them on sight but will listen. It ends with these words.

"Conflict between people will never end. But.. if they see us all together like this, surely they would want to know. What we experienced. Why the very same people who were at each others throats not long ago..are now coming together to Paradis, to appeal for peace? We must tell them the truth of that story, which unfolded before our very eyes."

And then it has a personal reflection bit with Mikasa before ending.

Like I do think AOT's metaphors are super messy and clumsy but I can't really read it in any other way besides being anti-war and anti-prejudice. I do think the holocaust parallels the series does are kind of unfortunate. Like I reject that its direct allegory but the extremely well known iconography combined with some traits of Eldians as well as some story beats become extreme yikes if you do treat it as direct allegory. Like, I think Iseyama was super clumsy with his disparate inspirations but I don't think he was intentionally making his story secretly anti-Semitic. (If so, by this take, virtually every single overwhelmingly sympathetic character in this series would be an in-universe jewish stand in.)

As for reading it as being pro-war or pro-nationalism I gotta be honest that I find that farcical. Like fuck the finale has literally all of the "heroes" of the story explicitly reject nationalism to try and do good for the greater world.

Watching gwitch got me to finish a 1/4 built gunpla I started years ago and then got me to start rewatching the original gundam show because crunchyroll is missing a lot of the other shows.

My partner came in a few episodes in and started laughing at them telling Amuro to eat, and I was like “they’re doing that to show how a group of civilian refuges is being constantly hounded by a hostile military force and the very few people able to fight to defend them are being run completely ragged with no real chance to rest or exist as people,” and I don’t know if thats me the buzzkill or the fault of cool giant robot show.

Anyway I forgot how depressing this show is. I probably haven’t watched it since the toonami era

I just watched the movie Redline and had to buy it. That was the biggest load of chaotic over the top anime bullshit in two hours. I think I just got punched in the face by an anime.

I can only describe it as Car Macross. Now I want to watch whatever Macross film was animated on that level.

I got to see Redline on its only weekend in Japanese theaters and with very little preconceived notion of what it was, and oh wow has that experience stuck with me even twelve and a half years later

like Redline even on the small screen borders on sensory overstimulation, now imagine that blown to theatrical proportions

They were sold off in 2011 when they were on the verge of bankruptcy, but I'm pretty sure it has much more to do with them absolutely bleeding talent, both from deaths and from a bunch of people splitting off to form their own studios (mostly Mappa).

It was really well done how they spent the whole episode undermining Shinri and Company's plans, everything was running on a razor's edge, and just when you thought everything was lost, they managed to eke out a pretty significant win.

    Nier: Automata Ver1.1a episode 6 check-in.

    General notes:
-An animated adaptation of the Pearl Harbor Descent! That's really cool!
-For those not in the know, this material is in the game as a text log only, then it was performed as a stage play in Japan only. In recent days, they've been releasing a manga adaptation. They've clearly decided to showcase this story more and more. I wonder if an Automata remake/remaster (no such plans have ever been announced, to be clear) might make this a playable part, similar to how Nier Replicant's remake/remaster added two major scenes.
-The Logic virus is an extremely relevant thing to keep in mind as the story continues.
-Command is looking pretty shifty, huh?
-The specific ending chosen for the post credits was hilarious.

    Superfan/franchise commentary:
-The game handles Pearl Harbor Descent VERY poorly because it's a text log you receive from a computer. Anemone mentions it ONE time to A2. If you get it then, then all is well. If you don't take the hint and go do other things and then come back after a story event or two? It's gone, you can't ever get it again until you do chapter select back to that first mention. There was literally no reason to be so restrictive about it. They should have rethought this and made it more accessible for longer in the game, very doable since they're still doing new ports and could patch the other versions. Then again, it's not like they patched the jank out of the PC version, so...
-The game has no machine gun or pistol weapons for you to play with, despite there being 40 total. Pod has a machine gun, but I just mean you can't ever use those guns we see the Resistance and now Androids using.
-So Anemone wasn't completely taken out of the timeline. She's exactly where she was supposed to be on the mission, with no changes. Including staying behind with Number 21. In the game's timeline, she kills 21 right before 21 goes insane from the Logic Virus, then seriously considers suicide herself, but then decides to at least go get killed in combat. She runs outside to get mowed down, but then the server is destroyed and she's left alive. So... did that still happen in the show? Will we see Anemone some place else? So far, this is the most impactful change to the show vs game.
-We don't know for a fact Lily died in the game but... she almost certainly did.
-Psyched to see A2, hopefully she gets new show original material, since she's held back in the game almost completely until C/D routes (and even there, 9S still gets the lion's share of the story).
-The Pearl Harbor Descent's mission's real purpose was to field test new models in the worst possible conditions. They wanted to see what they were capable of when pushed to the brink. How the mission played out was so obviously traitorous and evil that A2 is marked for death just for surviving to potentially tell the tale. The E model (aka, 2B) was created in order to kill friendly fire targets of necessity, in fact. I hope the Commander isn't portrayed too much as a tragic figure, she's freakin' heartless and has basically no excuse for any of this shit beyond "following orders", which... nuh uh.
-Pretty much a lock that we will see the end of the Pearl Harbor Descent mission in a later episode, from A2's perspective. I bet they'll introduce the Red Girls at that moment, which will have a much nicer build to their big arrival at the very end of the game.
-Adam mentions mackerel as he decides to give up on everything and go fishing. Mackerel of course being the fish so oily that attempting to eat it will kill an android stone dead, instantly.
