I really like Witch from Mercury, though.
nozaki-kun doesn't miss
fuck the gag on the next few pages slayed me
FUCK I'M DYING
Eh tokyo demon bride story doesn't have a next chapter estimate either and it's also not quite done so probably not.
Honorable Mentions:
Summer Time Rendering
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
Dress Up Darling
Kaguya-Sama: Love Is War
Neat, I would have voted for nearly everything on this list, but was kind of behind on current year stuff, so didn't submit anything.
(for those who don't get it)
I'm also watching Mob Psycho, but still on season one so III is a ways off for me. Bocchi is absolutely on the list and maybe I'll get back to Spy X Family? I kinda fell off early; right after Anya was accepted into the school my interest dropped almost completely.
Only the VAs for Rentaro and the first two girlfriends have been announced so far.
The manga's closing in in the 25 mark, so it'll be a large voice cast but not unmanageable. No idea what they'll do when the girlfriend count starts to really get up there.
And what was the feature film of the evening?
I'm not posting this just as bait, I want to actually talk about this
because I want to believe these shows have another inherent appeal to a wider audience, that there is an intrinsic value to who and what they portray that lends them merit
but then I look at the fanbases and
well
like, I'm honestly not sure what to think - do you think there's more to such shows than just another overt appeal to unsocialized otakus
I mean, some of those anime are quite a bit hornier but then we can make comparisons to 50 Shades of Grey. Of course, really I'm not even opposed to the existence of fanservice.
But like any genre of anime, I suppose it's open to parody of itself - which can then have added value as parody.
I mean I haven't seen either of these movies.
But assuming they involve nondescript, socially-inept blank-slate male leads who are suddenly and inexplicably the object of affection for one or more attractive and desirable women for no real reason beyond "is nice"....
then yes.
do you have any examples for romcom that aren’t 15-30 years old
Which was less "female lead falls over herself to get guy to notice her" and more "male lead works through his own insecurities"
Christ... oh dear lord. That movie came out 18 years ago.
I'm literally withering away as I type this.
That's almost 20 years old.
Uhhhh While You Were Sleeping? Dammit.
some good recommendations in this tweet
According to Google there was a movie in 2022 called "Tall Girl 2" in which the main character had trouble finding love because she's... *squints*...tall... and... a teenager.
Hm.
I mean, the selected group of 4 anime in the original tweet... Well I haven't seen Takagi-san but the other 3 have perfectly serviceable male leads with character. I also wouldn't classify them as harem anime despite being variable levels of "trashy"
Nagatoro and Uzaki are practically the opposite of harem. Not only do no other girls fall for the male leads, pretty much the entire supporting cast of both mangas, male and female, are actively working to get the primary couples together because literally everyone can see it.
Nagatoro also has the weird wrinkle that because it started as basically fetish stuff about being the useless guy getting picked on by mean girls and then transitioned into wholesome romcom, it's in the vanishingly rare category of a heterosexual romance where the woman is allowed to be genuinely driven and more competent than the dude without any weird insecure caveats (see the whole thing with the Prez and sports in Kaguya) and without the work presenting this as a problem.
So much of manga and anime is just wish fulfillment of one type or another, as long as it isn't just one long sex joke I don't usually see the harm in it. Oh, and not trying to flex but, I have a girlfriend. I am not just some lonely dude, I just like romance anime
Now, Rental Girlfriend...
For instance, one of my favorite anime the past season was "The Eminence in Shadow" which is perhaps the very pinnacle of the words "I'm-13-and-this-is-badass".
It's one of the most ridiculously pandering shows I've ever seen and I thoroughly enjoyed the shit out of it.
