At least it's focused on how shit a different part of the industry is, not like all the manga and anime talking about how shit it is to be making manga and anime.

    Oh, so they're treehousing?
    Dongs anime update:

I have finished the kaguya manga. Here are my conclusions:

    1. Maki is the best
    2. Still not a big fan of Iino
    3. The big Shinomiya succession drama felt rushed and kind of unsatisfying. A lot of important plot points and characters we've never heard of before were introduced suddenly with an exposition dump. I did like the characters of the Shinomiya brothers and father, though, and I hope the anime reworks some of the upcoming seasons to set up the finale better. The Hayasaka kidnapping arc in particular could probably be rewritten for that purpose.

    4. I kind of didnt care for Ishigami's latter-series arc as much, and not just because i dont like Iino. I think it was too much of a retread of Shirogane's story, and it was irritating how he continued to be and behave like a kissless turbovirgin all the way to the end despite having significant romantic development. I think it would have been a more interesting story if he'd accepted the one-night stand with Tsubame, leaving him sexually fulfilled but romatically unfulfilled - in contrast to Shirogane, who at that point is romantically fulfilled but still kind of a turbovirgin.

    5. I know its because of Japanese media standards, but I'm really tired of titles that insist on spelling out that the underage characters aren't drinking alcohol, despite their behavior clearly being coded as drunk. Has any teenager ever willingly chosen to drink non-alcoholic liquor?

    About that last point:
Censorship laws prevent minors from being depicted drinking alcohol. It's not a lack of artistic fidelity, it's Da Rulz.

There was actually a chapter of the 100 GFs That Love You where the protagonist almost got into a fist fight with the publisher/censors about that issue. It was hilarious.

Suzume was excellent. The trailers made me wonder if it would be super heavy or too ridiculous, but it's just a charm offensive, right from the start. There are worthwhile stakes to the thing, but the meat of the movie is a really engaging road trip, with fun characters and GORGEOUS animation. I personally could go for more RadWimps (there is a song that plays over the end credits), but that's just me being fond of the other two movies that heavily feature them.
The focus on Japan's abandoned places and their recent tragedies felt really well done to me, even as someone with no connection to those events directly.

It's absolutely just a trope to get around not being able to show drinking.

Back in like kimagure orange road the kids go around buying beer out of vending machines when nobody's looking

Finally got around to watching the first ep of Oshi no Ko, fuck me Doga Kobo did a great job with that.

and then kinda, sort of binge read the entire rest of the series instead of sleeping last night, always interesting when some random new hyperfixation just grabs you by the throat

    anime pacing speculation
I wonder if they're gonna rework the first couple of arcs to get more Ruby screentime. Can definitely see people getting put off at her being sidelined otherwise, since the early stuff is so Aqua focused.

Also, and I know it won't reach it this season, I really hope that they get super meta about adaptation stuff whenever they get to the Touken Ranbu stage play arc.

Yeah it sucks since Kaguya-sama was pretty good about making both Kaguya and Shirogane equal protagonists.

Was especially disappointed when Ruby got the Dark Sparkle but then Aqua continued to make all the big plot moves anyway.

I finally had time to actually watch the first episode of Oshi no Ko.

Wow. They absolutely knocked it out of the park.
    Careful!
The scene where Ai gets stabbed got me again, and I knew it was coming! Watching the light drain from her eyes as she imagines life with the twins she loves? Stabbed me in the heart.

Hopefully they keep up the quality.

I need to remember this is the Kaguya-sama author sometimes, with art by professional Chainsaw Man fan artist Yokoyari Mengo. (She had another hit before this, Scum's Wish, which I've never read).

    What I think I've noticed:
So in this film, as well as Your Name and Weathering With You
There is a lot of focus on the Tokyo/rural divide in Japan. All these films show the rural areas as absolutely gorgeous places, but also quietly dying. Everyone seems to want to move to Tokyo, to the neglect of the rest of the country.

Suzume in particular seems to be about the fallout of the earthquake and tsunami from several years back. The relationship between Suzume and her aunt was particularly visceral for me.

I've been wrong about these sort of things in the past, but that's the feeling I get.

Oh dang. I was worried about this when I posted about Muco a week or two back but [spoilered for sad]

it turns out that she passed away back in February, after 16 years:

In the early hours of February 6th, Mouko died peacefully as he slept. It was senile. 16 years and 4 months, I was really happy to be with you for a long time. I received a lot of precious experiences and connections because I was loved by many people. I'm really thankful to you.

Muko-chan has crossed the rainbow bridge. Commercials and calendar shoots... When I remember them, my heart warms.
I still can't believe it. I can't put my words together well.
    Thank you, Mouko-chan.
Please take a good rest with Poco-chan while "peeping" the clouds instead of a towel.

Goodbye, Muco, you were a very good girl.

Watched Trigun Stampede, having had no prior experience with Trigun. Pacing felt weird for the first handfull of episodes, with characters and events being introduced then passed over really quick. But then once it started delving into back stories and developing the character drama it really started to hit, elevated by an incredible soundtrack during the climactic moments

The fighting in Trigun Stampede (towards the end) reminded me of this, repeatedly.

Just flapping around with no rhyme or reason or weight. I also really hate when the villain monologues a lot about the way they see the world and their plan and the hero's response is "Nuh uh!" Or perhaps, "You're insane!" Stampede is incredibly guilty of this, the villains monologue for the second half of the series and the heroes have NO response whatsoever, they kind of suck terribly.

Having read the manga, no spoilers: It really works, and makes sure things dont outlive what the story can support.

There's no bleach or naruto constant escalation of stakes - just a really well told Shonen brawl that sticks the landing nicely.

Watching the Sailor Moon R movie and wishing the rest of the series was more like this. There's so much cool stuff in this: demonic flowers that possess people, a brainwashed space elf, a scene where the Sailor Soldiers fly to an asteroid with their hands linked and smash through an oncoming enemy, and trippy shit like hundreds of hands emerging from the ground. Also, despite green vines being a threat for most of the movie, the bad guy is covered in flesh-colored ones, one of which ends in a hand held over his heart.

Japan isn't the only place with them, but Japan absolutely has a bunch of ghost towns. Urbanization trends plus the rapidly shrinking population means there are a bunch of tiny communities that either recently have become entirely depopulated or will become entirely depopulated in like, twenty years tops.
