    Slush update:

Also hearing some rumbling that there might be a Emergency RWBY SLSH. They thought they were out, but it sounds like they need to get some feelings out about the *other* trainwreck of a series this season.

    because, yeah, it sure is.

It might not be the loudest manga I've ever read (that's Boyfriend X Girlfriend), but it's sure making a run at the title.

I really enjoyed their video about Lain, lots of thoughtful insights into the series.

With no spoilers for the end of season one (I'm finishing it this week), could someone briefly explain why the follow-up seasons/movies for Psycho Pass are bad? I'm willing to believe they are bad, just curious as to how they're bad. And if you like some of them, let me know about that, too.

There is an element of "wow, cool robot" in the second and third seasons, where it seemed like some of the writers really thought the Dominator was cool and wanted to make bigger and better ones just because.

The tone and moral through-line of Season 2's ending also runs somewhat counter to Season 1's, adding to the sense that Season 2 was written by someone who liked Psycho-Pass but missed the point.

Yeah. Season 2 isn't bad necessarily, but it does feel incongruous with season 1. And season 1 is excellent and stands on its own just fine.

There is a “special” episode up this week of The Great Gundam Podcast!

This spoiler is a warning for all living mortals.
It’s actually a secret Your Uncle’s Beach House about Cross Ange

Jackson and his guest host, Luke/Space Drake, are talking about how the big thematic symbolism of these women who live in dominion under the patriarchal whims of Embryo is thrown away for… effectively Kira Yamato Tusk effectively getting to unsettle him by bragging that he banged Ange before Embryo could with all his omnipotent godhood.

    Luke: “Embryo got cucked!”
Jackson: “It doesn’t show a way out of… It’s not like, ‘Oh, Embryo represents this patriarchy that controls these women, and here’s the things that they have to do to escape that,’ it gives answers to its thematic questions, it doesn’t resolve in the way that a story would, where like things mean anything. And so I felt like I’d just been dicked around for like 24 weeks and it pivoted hard.
Luke: Could you imagine watching this weekly?

    BOY I SURE CAN.

    [thousand yard stare, eye twitches]

    dammit Fukuda… dammit Fukuda… dammit Fukuda…

    Sometimes.

Sometimes I like to think that Witch from Mercury is a very very heartfelt apology from Sunrise for making it through that series week to week.

“Oh, oh god so you…. You watched all that just on the promise of a sunrise mecha series with a woman as the lead protagonist. Oh… oh we are so sorry. Please, please have this Gundam show.”

I just watched all of a show called Back Arrow this week and lord it was the most “why are things happening? excellent question. no further questions” liquid nothing of a mech anime. it sure happened. i did watch twenty-four episodes. like minutes in the rain. it’s like they took the cool non-racism mystery parts of attack on titan and made those also underwhelming and cynical

Both those shows were bonkers. One had a character be tragically pancaked by a runaway car and hurled off a cliff, then show back up completely unharmed in the next episode with the explanation "I had my frying pan," and the other involves the phrase "space baby uber" which is somehow a spoiler that will make no sense whatsoever until the final four minutes of the show.

I keep seeing people around the internet gush about the writing in Oshi no Ko but I just don't see it.

I mean it's fine. The premise is a little weird - but it's fine.
Adult characters shrugging off the super strange behavior of twin infants as them just being precocious felt a little hand-wavey.

And Ai's monologing about her philosophy on love and lies even as she's bleeding out seemed like typical melodramatic anime bullshit.

Now the protagonist's plan is to find and... I guess kill?... his biological father by

    1. Spending four years guessing at Ai's phone password until he just happens to get it right.
    2. Infiltrating showbiz so he can surreptitiously DNA test anyone that could potentially be his father.

All based on a hunch so that he can murder the guy who maybe sent a stalker after the girl he was himself weirdly obsessed with.

I'm not trying to say it's bad. It's actually pretty decent - I'm enjoying it.

But it's not, like, blowing my socks off or anything.

It's giving Erased vibes but I liked the premise of Erased a lot more

If ONK can stick the landing better than the Erased anime did then I'll consider it superior I guess

But yes the internet is losing it over the show and I'm not convinced it's about anything other than the very cool character designs

I feel like because the author is the same as Love is War, people feel like Oshi no Ko then must be good too. But honestly I think it's pretty stupid. And not like, stupid on purpose like Love is War sometimes was, but stupid when it's trying to be smart. However, that does end up being pretty entertaining in its own right.

I've given up on it since it's really trashy, screamy, and overall obnoxious, but it's using just incredibly fucking bad CGI in general as some kind of weird style. Apparently the most recent episode leaned into that extra hard by just pasting character heads over photos.

Like, this is how ALL the animals in it are rendered and animated. Not just the 'monsters' but the dogs in the village too. It's like someone opened a portal to 1980s CGI.

how far have the manga and show diverged? I (think) I know the ending of the last season wasn't how things go in the manga, but then again I don't know how much of the recent special is adapted from manga, or if it's anime original, but I found it to be pretty good.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, I'm curious to know where the anime stands compared to the manga as is now

The anime and manga of Kaguya have not diverged.

There is a separate argument that once he started writing OnK, Aka's writing quality for Kaguya dropped.

I'd say that, due to the nature of both the manga and anime industry, you aren't likely to get a satisfying ending. Manga either get snuffed out as soon as they falter or get dragged out long past any planned or normal stopping point to keep money flowing. And anime is apparently nothing more than promo material to sell more manga, and very rarely seems to get more than one season unless it's a popular enough series to warrant it.

I'd say anime sometimes has the benefit of going back and changing things from the manga, but that can backfire as often as it works out. My roommate talks about the Tokyo Ghoul anime like it committed a murder.
