This is a long ramble
The steam from the giant irons evokes the feeling of an industrial town that is now waning, a maybe once promising area that has moved on. All the young adults Naota looks up to seem to be looking for ways out of the town. Naota's brother, Takkun, used his baseball scholarship to leave home. Mamimi would use her photography skills to do the same. The feeling is very much that if you don't leave your small town you'll become a weirdo like your dad.
A lot of the series is Naota telling himself he needs to do X or Y to be seen as mature, but his idea of maturity is flawed because all the people he looks up to are silly (his dad) or skipped town on him and Mamimi (his brother). Theres a melancholy to Naota's relationship to Mamimi, like he feels obligated to be nice after his brother left her behind.
Anyways basically I'm saying, it takes the themes of what would be some typical wish fulfillment stuff and flips it on it's head. The whole series Naota is playing it cool, literally shoving his problems back into his own head. He's never really honest with himself or the people around him right up until the end. He allows himself to be used by Mamimi, Haruko and even Canti because it makes him feel mature or cool in the moment, but he realizes by the end the coolest most mature thing you can do is be yourself, even if that means appearing childish or immature. There's nothing wrong with disliking sour or spicy drinks. Just let the bullshit go and enjoy being whoever it is you are.
The "nothing can happen til you swing the bat" line I interpret as this; his whole life, Naota has been getting curve balls thrown at him and he's been too scared to swing. He's afraid that saying or doing what he feels will expose him as just a little kid. He wants to be seen as mature, maybe for himself, maybe for Mamimi, maybe because that's just what kids do.
At the end, Naota is able to say what he's feeling to Haruko. And as if on cue, she calls him a kid
Meanwhile, Mamimi finally calls him Naota
Sorry I have spent my whole life thinking about this show and have so many thoughts it's hard to bundle it all together neatly.
I have also just tried to get into toku multiple times as an adult and I bounce off every single time, so the Eva-Ultraman line has never stuck with me as much as it probably ought to
edit: and similar vibes with the ties between FLCL and stuff like Urusei Yatsura or Tenchi, honestly the manga my brain ties FLCL to most firmly is River's Edge
this being sufficient premise for a plot is why I love anime

its fine that office building was certainly evacuated first
right
You summed it up better than I ever could. Spot on.
As an addendum to this, I love that Escaflowne has the best 'unstoppable villains who also have cloaking devices for their mechs' theme music. Just Yoko Kanno bringing the dread like no one else.
Everytime I hear this I imagine Dilandau going on a rampage, burning everything in sight. Beautiful.
Probably. Like, kaiju is around, you get out of downtown.
too bad it's sunday, that building would've been filled up tomorrow

Because we're currently watching Vision of Escaflowne in Animenagerie.
Millions dead!
We’re waiting for a dub, probably in vain.
Steam
We did watch the pilot, subbed, though.
It was indeed a hit. But we need a dub.
wow... just wow.
I'm thinking if Birdie Wing finishes its second season and we finish our Season 7 without a dub being confirmed, we should go ahead and lock in both seasons subbed for Season 8.
If they'd announced a dub and it was just taking forever it'd be worth waiting for, but they haven't even mentioned one, still.
Funny thing is if they did do a season 2 for the anime they could probably cover everything up to the end but they probably won't
i don't think it's possible to know
wait, wait, I know
its how much yuuko is a shit (and some robot lady, idk)
He is displeased with the mom's attitude.
Meanwhile Ruby is rehearsing for her part as Ai, and she's having trouble processing how a parent could abandon their child. Aren't parents supposed to love their children, like Ai loved Ruby?
The whole chapter is peak WTF, and the art only accentuates it.
They are doing a second season. Airs later in the year. Season 1 only seems to have covered a quarter of the chapters so that is probably not happening no.
AniList
this ending is fine, better than I had feared.
Next week is a recap, unfortunately, so 2 weeks for the next episode
Dungeon Meshi trailer, airing in Jan 2024
