Let’s get the latter before we allow the former.

We've seen a preview of what a world where money has no meaning would really look like. Because what is the equivalent to that in our modern world? Companies that make money hand over fist regardless of the quality or value they deliver. There being no financial incentive to improve, or even maintain any standards of quality.

Couple that with most professions being populated with amateurs, people on a lark who thought, that looks fun, I'll do that! And who, on discovering that doing the job right takes a lot of hard work, either phone it in or move on to the next gig without putting in the effort to get good at doing anything.

Utopia only exists in the middle somewhere between being Morlocks or Eloi. And I suspect that, like the Jetsons, we will be totally incapable of realizing that we're living in it. That was the original idea behind the show. That no matter how amazing a time we live in, we will always find something to complain about.

    Nothing personal. It's just business.

I don't think we're going for the Star Trek future.

I think it'll be more like Star Wars, i.e. authoritarian fascists dominate us utterly, while we barely scrape by picking over the ruined remnants of a lost better age for salvage.

Only without magical space monks to save us.

We don't need space monks. We need more Nemiks.

It really depends on who "we" is, because not all of us are living the same "amazing" time. And at any time you can shift out of the group that could arguably be doing so, due to factors outside of your control.

That inherently speaks to how dystopian the time we're living in truly is.

    The same applies for Dystopias.
No matter how miserable it is, the people will just shrug and say "it is what it is"
