I predict that, in this game, someone will get blowed the fuck up. I love Front Mission, and am looking forward to this.

Is it just me or does it look like Yoshitaka Amano did that cover art? It's very reminiscent of his old school style.

Also, it appears that the DS is quickly becoming an SRPG machine. And that makes me super happy.

Yeah, a screenshot was shown a while back that had an all English translation. I still don't think it has been officially announced though.

Anyway, I can't wait. The art/world design for that game is so incredible, and it's really good looking for a SNES game.

    Front Mission 1st = Straw
    My wallet = camel's back

That's it. I can no longer put off owning a DS. When this drops I will be about $170 poorer, and possibly sleeping on the couch for a night or two when I have to explain to the wife that I bought another game machine.

Yes, Amano did the character designs for at least the first Front Mission game. I dunno if they had him come back to update them, or whether that cover is new art or not, but he definitely did the designs for the original release.

That screenshot was fake though. It was from a rom translation patch.

    Looks official now though.

Not unless they added it for the DS version. The only FM title with the internet thing was FM3, IIRC.

That's definitely Amano's work on the cover. It's too similar stylistically to his cover for the Front Mission 1st on the Playstation.

I'm going to say that the date Gamestop has in their POS right now is accurate. It's pretty rare for a Square item to just appear out of nowhere in the system unless it's definite.

I adore Front Mission so much. I'm so happy this is finally coming here.

I'm glad I rarely buy games anymore, because when things like this pop out of nowhere, I can instantly pull from the reserve to grab them.

I'm fucking psyched for this; FM3 is an all time favorite, although FM4 was a dissapointment (huge maps meant more time running in circles than actually fighting).

I'm hopeful that if this sells well they'll bring Front Mission 5 over here. It refines all the new stuff from Front Mission 4 with none of the bullshit that slowed that game down so much compared to its fellows.

Front Mission 5 looks a fair bit better then 4, which I still liked but could have been executed better. Since we dont seem to be getting it I'm just glad SquareEnix hasent completely given up on the series in North America.

The biggest problem I had with FM4 was the split story that I honestly didn't give a shit about. Everything else I could've tolerated if they hadn't split things up, and hadn't come up with a plot that was so...blah.

Speaking of FM3, would I be missing out on anything huge if I just ignored the whole "internet" portion of it? I liked what I've played of the game, but I found the web stuff to be painful to navigate and just deal with in general.

Heh, my girlfriend has anecdote 1995:

"Back in the day when email was not too common, I handwrote them [Square] a letter asking them to bring Front Mission to the US. I drew Final Fantasy VI artwork to go with it to sweeten the deal. Look how fansy I am, I drew your characters, bring Front Mission to the US. Then I got a response. It was from some guy, I forgot his name. He basically said they're not bringing Front Mission and that he hung the artwork up in the cubicle where he works. I wish I still had the letter so I could know the guy's name and curse him for ruining my life."

Needless to say, this is pretty good news.

So I'm completely intrigued by the images shown. But I've never played (or heard of) Front Mission. Blasphemy I know...

What's it like? Final Fantasy Tactics? Vandal Hearts?

    Or something completely different?

It's like Armoured Core meets advance wars.

Each of your units is fully customisable, in a very similar way to Armoured Core, and battles are like Advance Wars.

They're not really like Advance Wars at all.

Essentially, it's like every other SRPG. You go into battle, move your units based on their movement stat, attack with weapons when in range, etc.

The catch is, each part has seperate HP and can be individually disabled (breaking arms destroys weapons, legs gimps movement to 1 space, body outright destroys the enemy). The HP of each part, along with the move stat (on legs), and the hit, weight, etc on everything else varies from part to part.

You can customize each unit to specialize in different types of combat (long range, short range, melee), and pilots will occasionally earn skills that will additionally aid you.

In addition to the story, there's an arena you can use to test out new setups and earn money for winning.

But otherwise, it's standard SRPG fare. You can't add more units in battle, or build new robots, anything like that. Each character has a mech, and you can enter with a given number in each fight, and once they're down, they're down (as best I can recall you never permanently lose units for dying in battle)

Really, the only big flaw in FM1 is that skills appear so goddamn infrequently they may as well not exist.

But when you get a skill, you feel rewarded?

If that's the case, then that's pretty cool. Would be nice to have them appear a lot more, but yeah...

This makes me hopeful that maybe, somehow, we'll get Bahamut Lagoon ported as well. Granted it ranks among the easiest SRPGs ever made (Outside of the optional side missions, I reached a point very early where I had to actively try to lose, and sometimes still won), but I still enjoyed it.

Man, getting a port of Bahamut Lagoon would be great. Yeah, it's pretty easy, but it was a lot of fun to play, and I loved going through the second time killing everything using
the final boss summon (more games should let you do that)
