I am looking around at car insurance, but all of the places I've gone so far want $300-$500 a month, I expected it to be high since I'm a new driver but not this high. Does anyone know of any companies that will give me a good rate? It's hard to find something reasonable because I need full coverage.
Places I've tried so far:
Geico
Progressive
Travellers
Esurance
Safe Auto
Are you absolutely sure that's not semi-annual price? That's ridiculous.
I drive a '03 mustang that has absolutely everything covered and mine is like $95/month. I'm 24, and I don't think my coverage will drop until next year and then it goes down hard (males<25 = shafted)

How old is the car? It might be worth not taking collision and having a high deductible. That will bring down your rates significantly.
$300-$500 a month is fucking ridiculous. What are you driving?
'96 Jetta Trek edition. I knew it was going to be high since I'm only 18 and a first time driver, but goddamn I didn't think it was gonna be this high. Oh, and I'm in PA.

His sounds ridiculous, but yours sounds way too low. My brother is 28, is ex-military, and is on USAA's really damn good insurance policy for 75 a month. I just turned 25, but mine was I think about 200. I'm going to be expecting about 140-150.
I'm at $204 for Allstate. Progressive (I think) is the one that gives you 5 other quotes or whatever on their website, and they pointed me to Allstate.
When I was 19 (married female) I was paying 500 bucks a month on a V6 Camaro, brand new, full coverage, and a 1991 Ford Escort with just liability. (Progressive)
I thought Phoenix was the only place where rates were ridiculous, and this was in 2002. Since then my rates have dropped down to about 100 a month (24 now).
So I guess this is more of "Yeah, it'll suck for a while, but uh, it'll get better"? >_>

Almost all insurances (car, home, etc) are bi-yearly.
I'm paying $1500 yearly for high coverage from AllState for an 05 Corolla.

Might be right if it's a v6 mustang and/or an area with fairly cheap insurance. I pay about $90/month on a '99 cobra, 27 yrs old, clean driving record.
To the OP, as others have said, that's gotta be bi-yearly or yearly on a car of that type and age. Call up and double check or just do it online as they should make it fairly clear there.

I have no previous driving record, and the bank requires full coverage for the loan, so I may not end up getting the car unless I can get on someone else's insurance plan.

Go to the DMV and request your driving record. Something may be up, there.
Also, talk to an honest-to-god insurance agent, like, State Farm or something, see if s/he can tell you why it's so expensive.

[Screencaps totally proving me wrong]
Wow. Sorry, man.
Are you getting insurace for anything else? rent, etc?
Can you get it though your parents or anything and just pay them?
Or even try to get it though whatever company they're using: just like the cable co, you get something off if you have an existing policy(ies) with them. My car went down when I got a condo policy, for example.
That is a rediculous amount of money for car insurance. Something weird must be going on. Although I have heard that insurance companies have started using credit histories as a factor in determining your rates. If you are 18 and without any sort of history, it could be jacking up your rates. But that is still an ungodly amount to pay per year.
If you have a costco membership, check out the insurance they offer. It is through Ameriprise and it is what I use. I used to have USAA, which is typically as cheap as you can get anywhere, but Ameriprise was able to beat them by about 40%. I'm only paying about $600/6 months for two drivers (with an accident and a couple tickets between us) on two cars with comprehensive coverage. Even if you aren't a costco member, it would probably be worth the $50/year membership fee to join just for the cheap insurance. And their delicious rotessiere chickens.
See if you can find an independent agent in your area. I know they exist, because my father is one, and they will write through a number of different companies depending on your need. They're a little hard to come by, sometimes, though, depending on where you are (where in PA are you, anyhow?). They might be able to give you a little more insight into why your rate is so ridiculously high. If you were 18 and driving a Ferrari, then yeah, you're going to be paying that much. Do me a favor though, and outline the following for me:
Car in good shape? Clean record (maintenance, etc) on the car?
Types of coverage (comprehensive, collision and liability, etc)
Amounts of coverage ($XXX collision, $XXXX comprehensive, etc)
Deductible
I'll be seeing my father tomorrow and I'll see if I can get him to either ballpark a reason for your huge premium or give you some suggestions on how to lessen it. I just need more info about you and what your insurance needs are.
Yeah, car is in good shape, need full coverage, comprehension doesn't really matter. Amount of coverage doesn't mater, and for a deductible $500-$1,000.
I ran some of this past my father, and he says that you might be a result of a lot of expensive things lining up. For example, you're 18, so most insurance companies will rate you as though you've had an accident. This usually changes when you turn 21 or so--it has to do with the amount of driving experience you are likely to have had and thus how much of a risk you are. Also, location will affect your premium as well. In Philly I might pay 400 a month whereas in Somerset I might pay 75. On top of that, full coverage is pretty pricey. In PA, you are only legally required to carry liability insurance, but you said that your loan requires full coverage. If you are able to only carry liability, or drop collision or comprehensive, it should cut your premium by a good bit. I'd recommend that you find out exactly what is needed for your loan and then take that to an agent and see what they can do. Unfortunately, while $2600/6mo sucks, it's not entirely unreasonable for your age, depending on your location and coverage needs. Sorry, man.
Edit: Is it possible to put the car in your parents name? Even if you're the primary driver, being on their insurance will cut your cost way down.
I'm in WA, first time driver, and my insurance (through my parent's) is at about $100 per month. PA may or may not be the same as WA, but up here you can get a pretty hefty discount if you're a "good student", which usually means 80% or higher on your test scores.

I forgot to mention that in my post. My insurance is in my name but mine and my dads name are both on the title to my truck. I cant recall how much it effected the cost but i know having his name on the title help with my insurance rates.

Are you sure you weren't clicking all the maximum coverage amounts or something?
Yes, I even talked to somebody over the phone and got a high rate.
Have they told you why? Or given you the breakdown for what each portion of your coverage is running per month or for the year? I got a quote from Geico last week and it broke the whole thing down.
$500 a month with no previous driving record is just cah-ray-zee. I pay $125 a month on a POS '99 GMC Sonoma for full coverage in IN and I've got a pretty crappy driving history @ 24yrs.
I'm looking at car insurance right now too. And the lowest I can get is about $232 a month for a 2007 Jetta Wolfsburg, in Chicago IL. That's with Geico, I'll be calling other places tomorrow before I pick my car up.
It is most likely because of the loan. If you have no credit history and no driving history to speak of, they are nailing you for being a young driver, for having no credit, and for the potential that you not only total your own vehicle, but someone else's. It isn't fair but that is the way it is. If you didn't have the loan, it would probably be half that, even with comprehensive.
Even without the loan, depending on where he lives it's completely possible for an 18 year old's full coverage premium to be that much. Where in PA are you?
Also, comparing your quote to that of anyone over 20 isn't really a fair comparison. You will be rated considerably higher due to your age, regardless of your driving record or lack thereof.
Wow, I never thought living in a province where the government has a monopoly on car insurance would be beneficial. I only pay about 120 a month for a 98 Nissan Pathfinder, and next year will be the third year in a row that the company will be mailing rebate checks to its customers.

I'm a 22 year old male, driving for two years, with a 2001 1/2 ton chevy silverado, also in PA. I'm only paying around $150.00 a month with geico.

What are you getting as far as coverage goes with that? Legal minimum? Collision? Uninsured driver's coverage? What's your driving record like?
Also, talk to an honest-to-god insurance agent, like, State Farm or something, see if s/he can tell you why it's so expensive.

Sitting down with an insurance agent will probably be easier, though.

Go to the actual office and ask. There's something going on, and if your driving record is to blame, they can tell you that.
Also, don't even think about esurance.
