Buying a non-defective Guitar Hero 2 360.

Bought it earlier today and returned it for a refund to EBGames after the Whammy bar didn't work, at all.

Now I'm wary of buying it period. Is there a way to guarantee getting a working guitar that doesn't require the patch? My brother brought his over last weekend and it worked perfectly patchless on my system, which is the way I want it.

I heard that the serial numbers ending in 55 are bad and that 65 and 67 are better, but the threads on Kotaku and Joystiq that have that information are almost two months old.

Has anything changed/is the problem resolved or are EB and Gamestop just repackaging the fucked up units and selling them?

No, they're not repackaging old ones

We get them sent to us by Red Octane

so you just have bad luck

and should connect to Xbox Live

Why would there still be defective units out there? Shouldn't stores be sending them back?

After you brought it in as defective to the store they're going to send it back to the company.

Why didn't you try an exchange, the receipt would still be good for another week.

Several reasons, including the fact that the box looked a bit beat up and the tape on one end looked suspiciously worn.

But more importantly, I just don't feel like playing games with almost $100, after tax.

So is there some way to increase my odds of "getting lucky" and buying a functional whammy bar unit, or are we going to go through what I went through with the guy at the register and discuss how I should overcome buying a broken product through various fixes and rolls of the dice?

Test it at the store? The most obvious answer here might be the right one.

If they allow that sort of thing.

That's actually a really good idea. Thanks.

Um. Connect to xbox live? A title update fixed the whammy bar issue. I had a busted whammy bar, now it isn't busted anymore.

Just scored one that works patchless from Circuit City.

I noticed that this box was a two piece package with the case art printed on the front and back of the box itself, and the one that I got from EBStop came in a plain white two piece box that slid in and out of a one piece sleeve that had the art printed on it.

The new one is a 95065, although I didn't look at the product ID# on the first one.

Anyway, hope this thread helps someone avoid a shitty guitar, because it would suck to bring it over to a friend's house to play, but they don't have the patch or the Internet, so everyone gets to enjoy a big "bummer-dude" instead of a rocking evening of Guitar Hero.
