I am planning on buying a new MP3/video player with the next month or two. I been looking at the Zune, Ipod, and Zen vision: M. What do you guys think about these players or is there another i dont know about it. Iam looking into the 30 gig's, but if i can find a good just a MP3 player for cheap i'll grab that instead. (i live in canada too and the zune is not out here yet for what ever reason, wondering if its worth the wait or not.)

I like the Zune, as much as I've messed with it. My iPod broke after 5 months, and I was denied warranty coverage. I know, "anecdotal evidence" and all that, but it did piss me off enough to make sure I let people know who were in the market.
My fiancee just bought a Sandisk Sansa for around $40 a few days ago, and she loves it...

eBay has no street dates.
That said, why couldn't you just order from somewhere that ships internationally, like pcconnection.com? Waiting for a release date... psh.

Ebay works sure, most big places wont ship them to Canada. That being said, i will have no warranty if i buy a zune from ebay.
The first thing I did when looking at players was check what file formats they used. The iPod and Zune were FAR too limited for my tastes. Do I want to convert all of my 150MB+ .avis into .wmv *just* so they will work on my Zune? Not a chance. I was holding out for the Cowon A3, which was apparently just on the horizon--I mean, they'd been delaying for months and CNET posted a video with a working device in January. But now? I hear they're delaying again until August. I'm starting to get pissed wondering if I've been waiting in vain, I want my mp3 player now.
Edit: Because I was derailing a bit--what I meant to let you know was that the Zen Vision M will play a much broader variety of audio and video formats. If that's important to you, I'd be leaning in the Zen direction.
If you live in the Greater Toronto Area, check here: http://www.factorydirect.ca/static/index.htm If not, you can still mail order cheap awesome shit from there. Grab a 40GB Toshiba Gigabeat for like $130 or so.
i was interested in one of the cowons at first, but the lack of accessories also played into it for me. i went with the ipod and am very happy with it. it has plenty of space, isn't overly priced, and has great third party acces. my major beef is with itunes, and if i watched movies on it i woudln't be happy with converting, but there are plenty of converters available now.
I've been looking to phones for portable music. A lot of them let you put in your own memory cards/sticks and they function just as well. Plus the fact that it's your phone means it's less of a hassle. Most people always have their phones with them.

problem with this is battery life.
For me, if my MP3 player runs out of power - "Never mind, I will just have to deal with silence for a while."
if my phone runs out of power - "Oh shits! no one can contact me, and plans I have arranged might not work anymore."
My third Gen 30GB iPod, thats like 500 years old and bigger than a deck of cards is still running strong. Sure it took a $30 battery to keep it going this long, buy I'm pretty sure mines made outta adamantium or some shit. Its been in a pretty bad crash off my bike, dropped from my hip multiple times, and held out to change song in the rain. I don't ever wanna updrage to a newer one, except I've finally reached its full spot so I've been deleting music from my computer which is never fun.

iRiver is a Korean company that makes some pretty damned awesome mp3 players, but for some reason they're actually kind of expensive when they bring them over to the west. Technologically they've been leaps ahead of the iPod for years now, just a little hard to come by.
A friend of mine had one that played videos years ago (like right at the iPod launch). It seemed pretty slick.
The Zen Vision M looks awesome. I wonder if any of those eBay auctions are real, those are some cheap prices.
My boss has a Zen Vision M and he swears by it. One of the best features (for him) is that it supports MPEG2 natively ... so he dumps video straight from his Replay TV to the Vision M ... like Tivo on the go. The screen is drop-dead-gorgeous also.
My fiancee just bought a Sandisk Sansa for around $40 a few days ago, and she loves it...
I'm interested in the Sansa because I have so much SD card storage lying around. (And I keep getting mailers from this awesome computer store near me that have free SD card coupons ... so I'd probably redeem a bunch of them.) But I'd love to know how the sound quality is and how well the interface (or lack of interface) works out.
I won a 4GB iPod mini a while and it's still fine. Honestly, I don't know how people need so much space. You can take songs off and put them back in, you know.
My girlfriend got me a Zune when my 3G iPod finally broke after 5 years. Honestly, I really love it. The screen is huge and since all my music is MP3's, I don't feel limited in the music part. As far as the limited compatibility with the video, I really don't have any qualms with converting my some of my vids to WMV or MP4. The screen makes it worth it. Plus, the Zune has an FM radio and customizing the background is nice too.
I have a Brown Zune, and it is teh awesome.
The only problem for me is battery life, but I tend to watch videos because I think I'm cool (lol).
Really, though, it's very neat, and I prefer the analog interface to the clickwheel on the iPods.
Very, very cool device, a must buy if not an Apple fan.
I have a SanDisk Sansa. As far as I can tell it does exactly what an MP3 player is supposed to. Not too flashy, but not too shaby either.
Specific questions then ...
1) how is the sound quality?
2) can you skip around in a file easily? (I'm looking to listen to hour-long podcasts, so seeking around them is important to me.)
I have an iRiver h10 but I must say that it has been pretty buggy and has required multiple reformats in the year and a half since I've gotten it. When it works (which is most of the time) it is great though. 20gb for 200+$ wasn't bad either. I'll probably get a new one in 08' though, as by then something new and reasonably priced should come a long and I would hopefully be my financially stable.
Sidetrack: Whatever happened to that news of DRM being removed from online music stores?
Since i got my cowon d2 i don't think i can ever go back to the ipod/zunes of the world.. If i need battery life, pop out the sd card, and 50+ hours listening to music, 25ish watching videos, need more space? pop in an 8 gig sdhc card, i have 12 gigs and 30ish hours listening to music, 15 or so watching videos. The sound quality is second to none and the touch screen interface kicks ass. And the screen is so much better than the ipod videos its not even funny
Ipods will last you many years if you are smart about using them (but I suppose that this goes for any portable electronic). I see many people complain that their ipod died after "just one year of use". 95% of these people are also the people who run/work out with their ipod. It doesn't matter what brand mp3 player you have, but if it has a hard drive that sucker should not go jogging with you. He's fat and lazy and will probably just have a heart attack. Besides, I don't know why people would even want to run with a player as large as an ipod. It seems way too cumbersome to me.

I've got a zune and its been a real crapshoot so far. First, it will not install if you don't have service pack 2. I know, everyone should have it but guess what I didn't. I won't lie my copy of windows isn't legit and I'll burn in hell but at the moment this was a huge fucking inconvenience. I should've known Bill would find a way to dick me.
Once I got around that it was smooth sailing until I plugged the zune up to my computer. When I unplugged it the little button on one side of the usb plug broke and fell out. The zune's usb dongle has a locking mechanism requiring you to press the two buttons simultaneously to release the plug. This button broke the day I took the Zune out of the box.
The software is sluggish and somewhat clunky. Syncing videos to the zune takes quite a long time. However videos on the zune are sweet. I ripped a bunch of adult swim dvds on there and they look great. Screen size is huge and the button dial is ok. I wish the back and play buttons were a bit bigger. Headphones are really nice. Should you yank out the jack the music pauses, nice touch.
Despite all its, uh design flaws, it is a great little device. 4 aqua teen dvds took up barely 2gb. I skate with it every day and I've had no problems thus far, but it is early in its life.

You did pirate his software. Also, SP2 is available to anyone, illegal copy or not.
I just got a halo zune for fathers day. I'm currently ripping all my cds
So can anyone recommend wireless headphones? I was looking at the Logitech Freepulse, but i hear the first revision had a very poor headband that broke easy and rendered the set useless. Apparently they've fixed that with the current model, but they are still unadjustable and therefore tend to be very uncomfortable when worn for more than a half an hour?

At most it will last3-4 hours, as opposed to music 8-10 hours.
But that's my own fault.

Another big plus is the Zune pass. Unlimited music for 14.95 is a great deal to me, even if you're just renting out the music.
