I'm not saying they won't turn to him, I'm saying they won't make him a Lantern again
I could very easily see them going "We need all the help we could get, and this guy managed to make his own Corps work, let him run the SC again"
Where do I start? I'm caught up on basic knowledge all the way up until the Sinestro Corps War, but I haven't actually read a Green Lantern book since Kyle Rayner became the GL when I was 5 or so.
Emerald Dawn
Ganthet's Tale
Green Lantern/Green Arrow (Hard-Traveling Heroes)
Emerald Twilight
The rebirth stuff and then Sinestro War.
You would also be well served to pick up DC Universe: The stories of Alan Moore. Not only does it shed some major light on what is going on in GL right now, there are plenty of other amazing stories in it, (like the Killing Joke)

I think you could probably just start with Sinestro War (because it's awesome), and then pick up the current 'Secret Origins' arc. Emerald Dawn is just 'Hal as an old whiney bitch', Emerald Twilight is just an editorial mandated Knightfall/Death of Superman knockoff, and GL/GA has not aged well (OH NO ROY IS A JUNKY!).
Ganthet's Tale is a decent book though - Larry Niven story, and Byrne art (from his prime).
So, can the Green Lantern take down Scorpion ? I mean, he's dressed in yellow.
Depends.
Is there something non-yellow that he can throw at Scorpion?
Although the yellow weakness isn't as bad as it used to be, since the Parrallax retcon. They can affect yellow things, it just takes a lot of willpower to do it.

Was Legacy: Last Will and Testament of Hal Jordan a good book? I think that was the last thing that happened before Johns took over, and I always had a vague interest in reading it...

If you've always liked GL and Hal in particular, yes. Otherwise you probably wouldn't feel much connection to the story.

Yeah it wasn't bad. Some people cry foul on mischaracterization of Tom, but I don't agree. And it's not any where near the last thing that happened before Johns took over, but it did lay the ground work for the return of the Guardians, Corps, and Kilowog.
But you gotta love the overkill methods he uses for Batman's signature preptime.
PAINT EVERYTHING YELLOW! INCLUDING THE DRINKS!
Hal could have walked outside, encased the whole building in bubble, tearing out part of the street and the ground to never even touch the yellow, and then shook the building vigorously within the bubble. Then he would have been able to set it back down and walk back inside, ands ee if Bats is willing to behave himself now....
Or he could have rammed an energy construct down his throat to make him pass out since the -inside- of Batman's mouth was most likely not yellow.
Can Green Lantern form constructs in places he cannot see, like other rooms, or is it necessary to visualize where the construct is appearing as well as the construct itself?
And what happens if a Green Lantern doesn't know what the color yellow is?
No. Was Rot Lop Fan immune to the weakness to yellow? Did he have another weakness in its stead, like the sound of nails on a chalkboard or the guy next door banging his girlfriend really louding?
First, you owe it to yourself to read that story; it's by Alan Moore, and is included in DC Universe: The Stories of Alan Moore. The TPB also includes a ton of background for the Darkest Night, information on Sodam Yat, a bit of stuff about the world Atrocitus came from, and the introduction of Mogo. It's so good.
As for the yellow weakness, it didn't come up, since Fan only appeared in that one story, and only became an F-Sharp Bell at the very end of it. He's appeared in big splash pages here and there though, so it appears he's still active in the Corps. Given the way Johns has been mining Moore's old material for stories lately, I wouldn't be surprised to see Fan come up in some way.

I'd have to check, but I think he's listed in the GL/SC Files.

On the other hand, All-Star Hal Jordan is portrayed as a complete moron, so it's not surprising he didn't do that.
I've actually been enjoying Secret Origin, even though it does rehash material covered in Johns' previous work, but I am concerned with this last issue that it's kind of like the "First ten minutes of Last Crusade/SW prequels" problem. You have Atrocitus being responsible for Abin Sur's death indirectly, then he makes the weapon Black Hand uses, brings Sinestro and Hal together as compatriots, exposes Hal's effect on yellow, and God only knows what else. Just that fight makes for one hell of a day in Green Lantern lore.
I started collecting Green Lantern during the "One Year Later" event and was fortunate enough to be able to get back issues to number 1 at the relaunch. I've been collecting GL Corps, also from the issue 1 relaunch. Beyond that, my experience with Green Lantern is pretty non-existent. I know that the book was on rocky ground before Geoff Johns saved it, but can anyone recommend any other good GL trades that are still in print? I love the character and the rich universe of the Lanterns, and I'm hungry for more. But I also don't want to waste my time reading crap.
Oh and I've also read Rebirth and I have the Stories of Alan Moore. So I've read that. And that's pretty much it.

You can't go wrong with the Showcase Green Lantern books. They're cheap and have about 500 pages of comics and introduce Hal as the Green Lantern as well as some of the classic villains that Johns has been revamping. I'm a particular fan of the Ron Marz runs and like Emerald Twilight/New Dawn, Baptism of Fire and Emerald Knights. Circle of Fire was entertaining too.
Emerald Dawn 1 & 2 were pre-Johns retellings of Hal's origin and were pretty good. Morrison's JLA run features Kyle pretty prominently and is worth checking out. They just released an Omnibus of that.
If you go back and find the stories where Kyle becomes Ion for the first time you probably won't be disappointed. There's some good stories in there and you see what Kyle finally does to Major Force.
Also, if you can find all the copies of The Specter while Hal was attached to it, those were some really interesting stories. Abin Sur's in hell for a while. Sinestro comes back from the dead. It's good stuff.

Needless to say, Atrocitus' lieutenant, Vice, made me giddy.
I don't want to have to go to the library tomorrow just to read Wizard
But anyway preview's up here. You get a look at Vice:
