The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
Never played it, installing it now, going to rock some tits, oh yeah. Is it ok to go Psi first time round? any big obvious ways I could accidentally gimp my character? Who has the best face, me or Ramius? All this and more, in the SS2 thread.
Does Psi Ops suck balls or something? I'm totally ignorant about this game, I just think psychic powers sound cool.
Psi Ops characters are incredibly weak for a very large beginning portion of the game. Almost a third even. It's best to get a feel for combat using more traditional methods first.
Psi will be harder, especially on your first playthrough.
Also, if you're anything like me, you'll want to establish an item hoard on some levels... extra stuff that won't fit in inventory that you can go back to easily later without hunting around entire levels for them.
Let us know when you get to the
psi monkeys
so we can console you. :P

Yep, ammo conservation will pretty much be the most important thing you do in the game. If you can kill something with the wrench, do it. Also, I strongly recommend you start with hacking skills. It's a ridiculously useful thing to have, especially if you're a beginner.
Are you using a hyperthreading or dual core CPU? If so, you'll need an easy fix.
Anyway, I just played through this game for the first time a couple of months ago. It was awesome. Edit: I played a navy guy that focused on hack, normal and heavy weapons, and maintenance...possibly some other stuff too.
System Shock 2 is incredibly difficult to get running on modern day operating systems. I'm still encountering problems with my installation, and I've spent more time trying to get it work then playing it. You have to do quasi legal things to the game in order to get it to work on XP (even if you own a legitimate copy of the game like myself). Send me a PM and I'll gladly help you out to the best of my ability.
I recommend a Navy Melee-oriented hacker, but that's just how I roll. You can get through the game as a Psi-operative, but it's...a lot tougher, I'd say.

Tube, you also want to make sure the cinematics are playing. You can if you can get the intro to play. If not, the thread that Mordack linked to should help.
Also, it is adorable that you are playing SS2 for the first time an I wanna pincha you face.
Yeah, the controls and graphics are hard to get into, though.
There's a PSP port.
There's a PSP port? Man I need to fix the screen on my broken PSP.
Regarding the controls: I never had a problem...just use a gamepad. It was actually designed with a gamepad in mind. Even so, I have a customizable keyboard.
Well having tried various things it looks like I am destined to never play sytem shock 2

Do you have a dual-core processor? That may cause problems. It may also raise issues if your processor has hyperthreading. I know it was asked before, but it was never answered and is one of the most common issues.
Another possible fix is creating a user.cfg file in your System Shock 2 directory and, using notepad, putting the line "safe_texture_manager" (without quotes) in it
If you have a dual core or hyperthreaded processor, launch SS2 and ctrl-alt-delete to open the task manager. Click the processes tab, find Shock2.exe, right click it and set its affinity to a single CPU. Alt-tab back in and the problem is solved. You can do this from the start menu, you don't have to start an actual game
I've always wanted to play the campaign co-op with someone. I was just trying to do this with my friends yesterday but they couldn't get the game to work. Anyone up for it?

I would play this on the following two conditions:
1. That the people I play with vow to see the whole thing through and not just quit halfway through medsci because they're kinda sorta bored.
2. That the people I play with don't just run off and ignore the other players while they go on their own personal speedrun through the game.
I'll have to reinstall on this computer, but once I get it up and running I'd be down for it. I'd also like to designate a day and time so, like Lork mentioned, we could play through the entire game. Also, I may need to take breaks to cry and regain my sanity.
Works for me. And I'll second a "Deserters will be shot" policy.
However, while I was trying to play it with my friends, we discovered that SS2 has trouble with modern internet connections. Specificly, the host can't be using a router, since SS2 auto-detects your connection setting and if you have a router it will host on your local network. We were all on routers, but we ended up getting it to work using an internet service called Hamachi that lets you create a network over the internet.
So... either we need a host without a router or everyone needs Hamachi

There's no way we could possibly do it one sitting. I think there's a way to save, but we'd better make sure we know how it's done before we start for real, or we could have a rather unfortunate mishap.

Seriously? How does this work? I've always wanted to play this game, but the controls make it unplayable.

You can indeed save, and it's highly advised that you do it frequently (the multiplayer was added in the last patch and isn't entirely stable).

Do what you must to get the Assault Rifle.
Other than that you can play around.

Possibly this. I haven't tried it yet though.
