Getting off from work?

Things have been rather unpleasant here at work lately, and I have been secretly looking for a new job. I have been called for an interview, but it's on a Tuesday morning, and will require I take the entire day off. I don't want to let on to my current employer that I'm job hunting, so I need a good excuse for taking off work for an entire day. I have no vacation remaining (I used it all on my honeymoon earlier this year), and I don't want to use a doctor's appointment in case my boss asks for a doctor's note. I had considered faking an illness later in the day on the prior Monday and leaving early, then calling in "sick" the day of the interview, but I can kinda see that backfiring and biting me in the ass.

Any suggestions, H/A?

Thanks in advance.

What is this, 5th grade? Is your employer even allowed to ask for a doctor's note? I've never heard of that. I've use the doctor's excuse plenty of times.

We're a small-knit little company. We all talk about shit like this. Not making some mention to the specifics (even a vague reference) would probably be considered suspect.

I believe WI employers have the right to ask for a doctor's note if one of their employees misses a scheduled day of work. I could be mistaken, but my wife works in the employment industry and seems to think I am correct.

Well either way, work isn't a prison and if you say you're sick or have a family emergency, the most they'll do is give you a warning for not bringing in proof of whatever. Since you're looking for a new job anyway, that wouldn't be entirely bad... do you have money saved up?

Can't you just request an unpaid day off for "Personal Reasons"?

Adding onto the 'family emergency' idea, you could simply say you don't wish to talk about it. Any decent person would leave it at that.

Or simply claim you don't wish to talk about your 'medical problem'; I really don't think your employees will surround your desk taking guesses at various STDs or hemorrhoids (spelled right?) if they are as close as you claim them to be.

yeah, I'm gonna second the family emergency. It is the most indescript answer for anything that will get you no more questions asked, second only to "women troubles".

If anyone asks, just do the "I'd rather not talk about it, thank you."

Saying you didn't feel well should be fine. If they want to be dicks, they can say "next time you're not feeling well there'd better be a medical reason" but I can't imagine you getting canned for feeling unwell one time and only one time. That'd be insane.

If you are going to fake illness, take some Nyacin at lunch, like 2 pills. If you haven't been taking it regularly it will give you a slight fever as it burns out impurities.

Otherwise I would say family emergency.
