TW2002?

Hi all! This will be my first time at PAX, I'm looking forward to it. Something tells me I am going to be the equivelant of a grandpa at this event, but I don't care. I'm not afraid of younglings.

This is a call to all the truly hard-core/oldschool crowd who managed to exchange email around the globe sans "Internet". You know who you are. We don't need no stinking mice, or GPU's.

Is there any interest in participating in a TradeWars 2002 tournament during PAX?

As much as I loved TW2002 when I was an old-skool BBSer back in the day, I don't know how a TW2002 tourney would even work.

What are you going to do? Give us 1,000 turns to work with, and try to make as much money as we can? Or take turns throughout the day? How many old-skool BBSers are there anyway?

In any case, I am intruiged ...

Actually, I was considering a couple formats:

    1) Open: No turn limit.
    2) Limited: x number turns per day.

He who has the most credits at the end of the 72 hour period (duration of PAX) wins. (people can enter either class)

    Your thoughts?

Honestly, I don't think TW2002 is meant to be played when everyone is in one location. The real fun comes from playing over a long period of time with limited turns per day. With all the other stuff going on at PAX, I can't see too many people wanting to play that short of a game.

I'm also of the opinion that games without a turn limit are worthless for anything beyond figuring out how to play. There will be that one guy (or maybe a couple) who plays nonstop, then just goes around bullying the people who can't devote 12 hours a day to the game. A limited number of turns per day makes the game more fair.

If you really want to play TW2002, why not set up a server now for PA to play on? You could have 2 separate games going just like you said. Crown a winner at the end of each month, then restart the universe on the 1st of the month.
