DS to get yet more revisions?

I was surfing Engadget when I saw this interesting entry, marked firmly in the rumor category:
Don't place your bets just yet, but rumors are beginning to swirl in the DS Lite arena about a possible redesign. Considering all the PSP2 whispering that has been going on of late, it wouldn't be too surprising for Nintendo to plunk down a bombshell of its own in the face of competition, but moreover, we know Nintendo has a history of keeping its handheld hardware fresh. Be it colors or miniaturization, we've seen the firm's handhelds shrink and don new hues for ages, and the most recent blurb suggests that a new iteration of the DS could "feature a larger screen and more readable fonts for users who may have a difficult time playing on the smaller machine." Hey, it's not like grandpa isn't already getting his game on with another Big N product, right?

http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/20/nintendos-ds-lite-getting-redesigned/

Oh....kay. Are there really people out there who gripe about the screen size? And would a bigger screen make for a bigger DS? And does Nintendo really need to redesign a product that's already selling like hotcakes with a side order of blowjobs?

Eh. The GBA went through three revisions, too. I'm pretty happy with my Lite.

And I'm guessing that one of these revisions is going to get rid of the GBA slot, eventually. But that's just a scientific wild-ass guess.

Okay, I'm thinking of picking up a DS, but I don't want to get a Lite only to see the next version blowing its ass off, with people going 'Oh, you know how DS Fat got destroyed by the DS Lite? Yeah, that's what my DS Ultra did to my DS Lite, go get an Ultra, you won't regreat it.'

Is it safe to get one now?

I definitely wouldn't have predicted another DS redesign , but what do I know? I hope if they do make a DS Featherweight or whatever, that they keep it about the same size. Any smaller and it would be harder to play.

My only gripe with the Lite is the fact that GBA carts stick out of it. If they changed that it would be cool.

If you like the current design of the lite, get the lite. It isn't going to suddenly get worse if something new comes out.

I stuck with the phat because I didn't like the way the lite felt in my hands.

or certain features of the Pokemon games. Getting rid of the GBA slot is not an option as far as revisions go. Maybe the next full reinvention of the DS, like DS2 or DS360, might get rid of it, but it'll be around as part of the DS1 forever.

You wouldn't? The RAM cart is only required for the shitty (although admittedly better than the PSP's) browser, and rumble is a gimmick and stuck out of the Lite anyway.

as mentioned above, there are features in pokemon that require the GBA port, as well as other games.

SOme games, Japan-side, even feature expansion packs that plug into the GBA slot.

I think I heard about this over a month ago...

I could see it happening. Dunno how it would do. I doubt it would be wildly better than the lite, just a revision for the blue ocean adults with their wrinkly, oversized hands and failing eyes.

Boy the DS rumble pack was a peice of shit. More like croaking frog pack. Wonder how the lite version was.

I like my DS Phat because it's a such a goddamn trooper.

I've taken it everywhere and done all sorts of horrible things to it and I've only had to take it apart once.

Hell, I even dropped it in a toilet once, completely submerging it in water and urine, and it still works.

I can't bring myself to part with it. Also the iPod-esque style of the lite is kinda gay.

But let it be KNOWN that I skipped Church (yes, I'll be damned) to get a DS Phat the day it came out. I also bought it at Best Buy, so I got the Product Replacement Plan... and as soon as the Lite came out, I stuck my Phat in the microwave to get a Lite. For free.

Oh, and there's a small story to putting the Phat in the microwave:

I took the battery out, and stuck the beast in. I put it on 30 seconds (please note: 15 seconds can kill a cat), and shut the door. After the 30 seconds went, I took it out and put the battery back in. And, I'm sure everyone's aware of: It still fucking worked. It took 3 seconds to fry my roommate's ipod (granted, it has a HDD so yeah...), so I put it back into the microwave for 1 minute.

The beast finally died with a loud roar. Like I'd just thrown it into a tar pit.

(Top screen stopped working, but the unit still turned on... Jeeze Nintendo, quit making such good products!)

DS browser can view images on 4chan before you click on them, for one thing. Also, touchscreen controls are nice. Of course, last time I used the PSP browser was quite a few firmware versions ago, what with me not owning a PSP and all. Maybe it got better since then, whatever; it's still a mobile browser and I haven't found a mobile browser that I liked yet. The DS browser has a nice interface but it's just so goddamn slow. 14 MB of RAM just doesn't cut it for the intertubes anymore; this isn't fucking 1995.

Yeah, I told people to go to walmart and buy the $6 ones.

Wow. Highway robbery at it's finest.

I took three showers a day, because of how dirty I felt when someone bought it.

    Ahahahahaha, awesome.
Also, wanted to say that your microwave story is the best. Not just because the DS took forever to die, but also because you conned Best-Buy. :P

Haha, thanks. Just giving you guys some ideas.

I know that I was pretty close to having a "broken"* 360 when they announced the Elite. But I changed my mind since I don't really play my 360 much. So if they bring down the price, I'll do it. So I can get a free game out of it.
    * by "broken" of course, I was going to fry the HDD on the inside.

Eh. The GBA went through three revisions, too. I'm pretty happy with my Lite.

And I'm guessing that one of these revisions is going to get rid of the GBA slot, eventually. But that's just a scientific wild-ass guess.

then how would you use the rumble cart or the RAM cart?

You wouldn't? The RAM cart is only required for the shitty (although admittedly better than the PSP's) browser, and rumble is a gimmick and stuck out of the Lite anyway.

Note that the text on that box is all in moonspeak, which is really just proving my point. They didn't think that the huge DS market in America was sufficient to sell the DS Lite Rumble Pak.

    Wait what?

So the DS Lite Rumble Packs they sell at Best Buy (and probably elsewhere) are just figments of my imagination?

EDIT: Nintendo branded in English packaging, not imported.

    You are so mean.
No DS deserves to die such a horrible death. :(
