Perfect mouse? - revamped Logitech G5!

DeusfauxDeusfaux Registered User regular
edited June 2007 in Games and Technology
Maybe this is already totally known and I'm just the last one out from my cave, but the Logitech G5 - widely regarded as the best corded mouse for gaming - has had a revision and been turned into a 2nd (3rd after the rare gray edition?) seperate product SKU...

... WITH TWO SIDE BUTTONS!

3011.1.0.jpg

Yeah, the biggest (only?) fault of the G5 has been corrected, now with a total 9 buttons (one more than the big alternative MX 518) and in a new "electric blue" color. Supposedly also finessed the tilt vs clicking the middle button.

Havent seen any north of the border (Canada) yet, but apparently out at places like Best Buy USA or Circuit City

Is that two buttons per side, or just two on the left?

    Two on the left.

they strayed from the old MX design and turned one of the side buttons into one of the two "tilt" buttons when originally creating the G5/7

lots of us (I've said it in nearly every mouse thread) didnt move to the new tech because we're used to the two side buttons, often invaluable for web browsing or just familiar game setups.

now you have... the perfect mouse?

Hmm...most intriguing! I just bought a Razer DeathAdder, which I quite enjoy. Otherwise I would most definitely pick one of these up. I had an MX510 for some time and loved it. Two side buttons are critical.

glad I waited... was thinking of getting a razor mouse but I wasn't sure if it was worth it.

    seems very nice.

edit - while shopping around, if a given mouse doesn't list its DPI, it isn't worth taking into account for gaming I guess? seems obvious but I like that revolution design so much, but I doubt it's on the same level, gaming wise.

    Hmmm...

My old school MX700's batteries are starting to only last a little more then an hour. Also I have to play with it for what seems like an eternity to get it to sit on the charger in the correct position to charge. May have to pick this up soon.

I'm guessing that because the scroll-wheel on that mouse is smooth like a baby's ass, it won't "click", if you get my meaning? It'll just roll smooth?

    Because that sucks.

no...? Logi's mice have had smooth wheels for years and they all click

the only ones that DONT click are their newest line the MX and VX revolution - which is the entire focus of those products, in that you can spin the wheel many revolutions with a single flick

To be precise, they do click, but you can switch it from clicky to freewheeling, or have it do it automatically depending on how fast the wheel is moving.

is the razor worth it? I wish they had them in a store so I could try 'em out. I asked the guy at best buy if I could remove it from the box and he said no. that sucked.

also, I like non clicky mousewheels.

G7 is the cordless variant - however it has not been updated with a 2nd side button like the G5 just was.

you can probably expect it though

I think I tried this out in the store. It was bigger and heavier than the Razer and it had a 'free' mousewheel. It is shaped to fit in the palm of your hand so I could see it being a huge hit with the low-sensitivity crowd.

I managed to win a Razer Diamondback a while back, moved onto it from a Logitech MX510 and I really did miss the two buttons on the side when I swapped. I've now got to used to the single side button on each side but I really do like the gaming performance of the Diamondback.

That new G5 looks nice though

No, I mean people that use large mousepads and lower sensitivity settings and move their whole arm (like competitive fps players). High sensitivity users won't let their wrist leave the mousepad and prefer smaller mice they manipulate with their fingers.

I was hoping to the the G5 but they just haven't given it enough buttons :( I had to get an MX Revolution instead. I need at least 3, preferably 4, buttons on the left side.

Personally, I use the Habu Laser Gaming mouse. (Cooperation between Razor and Microsoft), because I always like the design of the explorer mouse - but I want a mouse based on the laser technology.

Although the first setup wasn't easy, because I had to upgrade the firmware of the mouse :P in order to resolve a few movement issues. The second disadvantage is that the default configuration of some buttons is set to reduce or increase the resolution (which is saved on flash memory within a mouse). So you need at least Windows + Drivers to reconfigure this beast. The G5 works out of the box with different operating systems.

umm the G5 now has the same or more buttons than the MX revolution or any other mouse.

im not sure which it is because I dont know if the side wheel or the small silver bit behind the top wheel are buttons on the MX revo

My only complaint about my G5 is when I web browse I use the middle button for opening links in new tabs. Middle clicking is difficult because the mouse wheel is so tall it often spins instead of clicking which moves the page and the link. It can be irritating to have to stop and focus on pushing exactly straight down to click.

Otherwise its the best mouse I've ever used. Just wish they would flatten the middle button a bit.

You can adjust the mouse sensitivity with the + and - buttons behind the mouse wheel. The three bars show which setting it's at.

Free-wheeling mice SUCK for FPS gaming, simply because usually each notch you turn corresponds to a weapon, and when it's free-wheeling, it can just skip the weapon you want accidentally.

Just to be clear, this new G5 is not a free-wheeling mouse. The free-wheeling mice from Logitech are their new MX and VX Revolution mice, and the free-wheeling can be turned on and off at any time (I believe).

I know that when I first saw the G5 at Blizzcon, I responded with "where is the second button" and the Logitech guys told me that people had trouble with two buttons and would often hit the wrong one (seriously, wtf?). I told him that I didn't want a mouse with fewer buttons. His response was that if enough people wanted it, they would add another button. It looks like they have, though I wish they would revise the cordless G7 as well. I use an MX1000 on my laptop and for work, but I really want something better for gaming that is cordless (MX510 right now).

Actually the super competitive FPS players usually grasp their mouse in a claw-like grip that gives them super control over the mouse. After a little while (maybe even less than an hour) it actually hurts, but it gives you great control. That's why Fatal1ty's branded mouse is that tiny hockey puck thing; it's a good shape for holding in a clawlike grasp that you manipulate with basically just your hand.

I'm still a huge fan of my MX Revolution. My mice NEED to be cordless (cords drive me nuts) and there's so many mappable buttons on the MX Rev that it feels like I have a tiny keyboard under my right hand.

    Actually - funny story - I do.

I switched to Ubuntu a while ago and was having trouble getting certain functions of the MX Rev to work - namely the search button that I remapped as a middle mouse button (oh man, NOT having to worry about accidentally scrolling when middle clicking is a godsend). I tried a half-dozen mouse utlities, when finally I found out that the way Logitech treats that button is by mapping it as another USB device entirely. As a 1-button USB keyboard.

One keyboard utility later, and I'm up and running. Bizarre, though.

    Anyway, commence RF-interference bashing.
