I think leveling in a sense helps you identify and become closer to your character and allows you to transfer your character's new abilities into your in-game RPing. Thats how it kind of works in D&D.
I'm not sure how I feel about insta skills. I imagine we could come up with a good system...
Taco Bell does win the franchise war according to the tome of knowledge that is Demolition Man. However, I've watched Demolition Man more then a few times and never once did I see WoW. In conclusion Taco Bell has more lasting power then WoW.
I posted about it some in the mmorpg ideas forum. I like the concept of permadeath, I like the concept of not levelling in any way, and I'm wondering how they'd combine.
You like the concept of everybody having every skill maxed out without leveling.
The idea I proposed there with the rolling up a character, basically doesn't use any leveling for the current character you play.
Here's what I'm thinking, after you find a wife NPC and make a child character, you somehow have to teach that child. The amount you teach this child is derived from the amount of experience you earn while using your static skills. When you die and pass on, your child has his skills set to whatever levels your teaching has given him. Your child's skills are now locked, and now your child must teach his own child to continue advancement. The amount of experience you pass onto your child depends on the different regions you visit, the number of monsters you slay or the number of items you craft, different little things. A Dungeon Master can even decide to secretly grant you experience. All the numerical values are hidden from the player of course.

you would have probably liked the abyss test server. they didn't have perma death. but you could log in. pick your 7 skills to gm, pick up a bag of like 160 regs each, or gm armors and weapons, bandages and just go to town. it was pvp awesomesauce. it don't last to long though before they took it down =/
I recall one early iteration of the abyss server involved moongates that turned you into monsters, you'd get stats and skills that reflected it. They were scattered all over britain, it was a whole lot of fun, everyone ganged over the lich and demon spawns, but the few proud slimes fought on and poisoned everything.

They're still outside, Shiesty Bob's alive again and they recruited Omni a 666 member. Both are now banned from house, but Omni has deadly poison arrows, so he killed 3 of our guys in seconds.

I just killed one of those guys and looted his exceptional leather armor, magic wand of Identification, reagents and his bracelet-, boots-, ring- and pouch-of-magical-reflection, plus his cloak of invisibility. Thanks, Nasty!

Teehee. Yea, attacks have cooled down now mostly. Most of us are going about our business though that house being there is a pain in the ass.

Massive swarms of PKs have descended upon the house and killed many. It's over.
It's time to pretty much pack up and leave that hell hole. SDI made huge mistake by going public while everyone was still a god damned noob. Either that or someone has apparently led enemies to this thread and our guildhouses. SDI was eaten from within.
You would think that if people in AI want more people on the shard, they would at least grant some leniency to allow us to actually become a reasonable guild before they try and drive us out. I understand PvP combat, but driving a guild out of their camp within weeks of them all joining the shard seems kinda shitty sportsmanship if you ask me.

They don't want more people on the shard really. They like the people already on. And if some alien guild of douches suddenly appeared out of nowhere and started flooding your areas on your shard you'd probably want to kill them too. Everyone knows SDI did not come in peace.

None of our mages were on, otherwise that dexxer woulda been easy to take. Only Aegis was there and that just wasnt enough >.<
Yea, I can't cure deadly poison yet and Sheisty Bob (and I expect others) had equipment completely made up of Magic Reflection items, which makes me casting spells on them folks useless. We had no mages, so they could just pick us off from afar. I don't know if we have to move, but we have to get a township to secure our spot wherever we end up.

So euh, guild war trouble aside, this thread has gotten me all kinds of excited about trying my hand at this game. Anything new-player friendly that i could play that would be an immediate help?
I ran a guild called [NEW] for the better part of a year on angel island. As you might have guessed, it was for newbies to join to train up. Everyone knew about our location, and I managed to keep them all fairly safe.
What i'm saying is, theres no need (and really no point) to move. The best way to deal with people overgriefing your area while you're trying to train is to just ignore them. Don't go running out and fight them, just do what you need to do in the area then move on. What these people want to do is fight/PK. If you don't give them that chance, they'll get bored and go away.
Also, I'd stop macroing in the town. You should each look for remote areas to macro your chars up instead of macroing at your now busy housing area.

What about some PVP lessons? Would you guys like me to try to get in touch with someone (or some people) to give you all some pointers on how to defend yourselves?

Advancement through the ages.
I wouldn't recommend insta kills.
The connection is about 8mbps download and 780kbps upload.
EDIT: So, when I try to log in OR link to UOAM, I freeze up. Any suggestions?

THEY'RE TRYING TO EVICT US!
Edit: We need to rush our township guys. They're placing vendors out there trying to make money off of our location.
The guild fund has about 26k.
Edit: Anybody who PMed me bfore 9 last night now has access to the private guild forum.
Well, my fisherman has a boat and probably GM fishing, he can get Message in a Bottles so I'll try to donate what I can.

We're doomed.
That's it.
We're just doomed. 666 is the strongest guild on AI.
Just ignore them and move on, if you're not looking for a fight.
Macro on boats!

How'd you do it? This is what we need to do more

To the seas, and beyond!
Put some money in and get a new one on some god forsaken island!

And when they find you on the islands, they will just hunt you down all over again.
This is another issue I'd want to address on a private shard. No gates or recalls.
You'd be surprised.
Walking, Running, Horses, Boats.
Well, i don't know about you, but I didn't come to the server starting shit.
We need to find a more remote location, either on an Island or in the middle of a forest (possibly packed full of hard creatures).
That is the only way we'll be safe.

You won't be safe. Trust me. You were practically in the middle of nowhere NOW and you weren't safe.
We need a township first. Otherwise they can just come along again and plop down a house near us.

It's really no surprise, we all saw it coming.
