Defense of the Ancients [DOTA]

From wiki:

Defense of the Ancients is a team game with two opposing sides. Unlike regular Warcraft III games, in which many units are controlled by the player, in DotA each player must choose or randomly select a single hero - with its own skills, strengths, and weaknesses - and control only this hero in order to achieve victory. The objective here is to destroy the opposing team's main structure (the "Ancient"), thus giving rise to the game name. To reach the Ancient, each hero must defeat waves of units, structures and enemy heroes. Along the way, the player may upgrade his or her hero by defeating enemies in combat, which supplies gold and experience points. These are both necessary in order to purchase upgrades either from shops or the hero's ability list.

Each hero can learn three "standard" abilities, and a special "ultimate" ability in all versions. Each hero also has the fundamental attributes, Strength, Agility, and Intelligence, of which one is designated as a "primary" attribute. This combination of unique skills and the heroes' affinity for a particular attribute defines each hero's role in gameplay.

Primary Game Modes: You mostly see -apem/-arem in pubs

-ap: All Pick Everyone may pick heroes from any tavern. Incompatible with allrandom, teamrandom, leaguemode, moderandom, and reverse mode

-ar: All Random Every player gets a random hero from any tavern. Incompatible with allpick, teamrandom, leaguemode, moderandom, and reverse mode.

-lm: League Mode League mode: All forms of random are disabled. 10 players required. Blue picks first, then pink and light blue, then teal and purple, then gray and green, then yellow and orange, and lastly brown. (New with v6.35, sometimes Scourge gets to pick first rather than Sentinel) Incompatible with allrandom, mirrormatch, teamrandom, deathmatch, moderandom, allagility, allintelligence, allstrength, itemdrop, nopowerups, supercreeps, easymode, duplicatemode, samehero, and reverse mode.

Secondary Game Modes

-dm: Death Match If you die, you will have to pick a new hero once you can respawn. Deathmatch must be selected before any primary game mode to work. If a random primary mode was selected, you will recieve a hero according to that random mode. A team loses if it has 36 deaths, or if its ancient is destroyed. Incompatible with allintelligence, allagility, allstrength, teamrandom, leaguemode, moderandom and samehero

-em: Easy Mode Towers are weaker, experience is gained faster, and you get more periodic gold. Incompatible with leaguemode.

-NM: Normal Mode. Towers are stronger, experience is gained slower, and you get less periodic gold.

-HM: Hard Mode.

-wtf: What the F*** Mana costs and cooldowns removed from all spells and abilities

What We're About

I'm hoping this game on will allow veteran players to hang out and play with a group of experienced individuals, making team games a lot more enjoyable. I also hope that new players won't be afraid to join us, no matter what their skill level is, and learn a lot about the finer mechanics in a stress free environment in a private (where we can talk casually about strategy) or a public game (practice what we've learned).

So yeah...game on. Hope some of you are willing to join me.

WE PLAY ON US WEST USUALLY IN THE EVENINGS

Funny I see this thread. I just got back into DotA about a week ago. In fact, I literally finished a game five minutes ago -- went 9-1 with N'aix (yeah, not that hard). Anyway, I'm RoxorMcPwnage on whatever the West coast server is.

I'm pretty good at DOTA. With just about any hero. AresProphet on the forums, AresProphet on Lordaeron (US West). I usually host pubbies, 3v3 or 5v5 -AP or -AR. -EM is for people without skill.

I'd love to play in some arranged games, but I'll be without a computer for about seven days starting.... now!

Oh, hell, maybe I'll have to finally get War3 and try this out. DOTA doesn't require Frozen Throne, right?

Of course, I can't seem to find anywhere that sells Reign of Chaos by itself, so I might just give in and get the still overpriced Battlechest.

    Wellll

Really old versions of DotA that no one plays anymore don't require War3 (They have longer load timers than the TFT Maps too).

So you could play with.... no one. :(

If the pa dota guys could post up in here so i can get their names down that would be great.

Anywho - I think we'll just standardize everything by saying people should play on uswest (since I assume most people visiting these boards will be central/west anyway). I'm personally east coast but have played on west.

I usually get on around 10 eastern...might be on tonight, although I have a trumpet gig.

So how about those new heroes? Undying went from broken to easily killed in one patch lol.

Axe is a freakin' blast to play as. That hunger spell can land a first blood so easily. With axe, I normally go...

    1. Battle Hunger
    2. Counter Helix
    3. Hunger
    4. Helix
    5. Hunger
    6. Ultimate
    7. Helix
    8. Berserkers Rage
    9. Helix
    10. Rage
    11. Ultimate

I switch to a focus since hunger loses its effectiveness mid/late game. But it's a great way to catch someone as they're running with low HP.

I tried doing a new build with him...namely the hood of defiance + carrion armor (that one with the hyperstone + two armor build) but he was rather weak.

It seems like a heart is almost a necessity for him. Although, having the hyperstone was really nice.

    *edit*

you and I should work on bane elemental + sand king team work. Early game, bane can sleep + fiend grip someone while the sand king casts epicenter.

    Easiest. Double Kill. Ever.

Takes anywhere from fifteen minutes to half an hour to get a RoC DotA game going. However, one advantage is that most of the people there have been doing it for a long time - less likely to get leavers and stuff.

    That's for pubs, of course.

Wasting points on Hunger is not worth it. Call/Helix + stats is much, much more effective for everything after level ~2. As for items you get a Vanguard or two on Axe and then it's farm city.

Also what's with the map in the OP, that is old as FUCK.

Yeah, hunger is great early on.

Generally, people try to gain as many lvls as possible before retreating back to their base for the first time, which means they allow their HP to shrink pretty low at times.

Hunger should net you at least 1 assured kill early on.

Just don't open with it. They usually retreat. However, it's great to use when someone begins to retreat, since there's pretty much jack they can do about it.

Sometimes it's beneficial to open with Battle Hunger. Against another melee opponent, preferably one without a means to disable or heal efficiently, a build of Battle Hunger + Counter Helix can be very effective. With a stout shield, you can put battle hunger on them, run through the creeps to get a helix proc or two, and generally chase the opponent off.

By forcing the opponent to heal or face death in a solo lane you gain a valuable experience advantage, as well as the ability to freely farm gold. The other aspect of forcing a retreat is lane control. Without having to worry about coming to your lane, your allies are free to either farm their lanes or roam in an attempt to set up other kills. I'm not going to play down getting kills, but if the opponent does not have boots and has to return to the fountain early, it's a much longer trip than if they would have died. Thus, more experience loss and catching up to do.

This is why I always tell people to wait before they get to their lane before they choose skills with Axe. When you play DotA you need to be flexible enough with your item and skill builds to accomodate the opponent's heroes. Against any heroes with ridiculous amounts of strength, healing items, healing spells, or regen, Battle Hunger quickly becomes frustratingly useless.
