It's a good thing to start out with as many 'Mantle of Intelligence' as you can for the first few levels and change them into Null Talismans (usually complete your 5th Null by level 6 or 7). The +15 Str will give you almost 300 hp, +4 armor from the agi, and you get an extra 30 dmg from the Int boost. You'll be doing almost 100 base dmg for each attack by lvl 6. If you have full mana you'll be doing an additional 50 bonus dmg with your arcane orb attack. 150 dmg per attack (non critical) is an insane amount of damage to be doing at level 6, and all of this coming from an Int hero. If things go badly against an Agi or Str hero you'll also have your ult which can give you an instant 250+ dmg AOE (as most agi and str hero have sub 40 agi at level 6).

You should be able to control your lane fairly easily with this amount of damage in the early game. After this point I generally start switching out my null talismans for Aghanim's Scepters. The scepters give you huge 500 hp and 500 mana boosts which really complement your arcane orb skill and the +25 int translates to an added 200 to 300 dmg to your ultimate. I've had the misfortune of playing against some guy where a couple of his teammates left and so he built 3 Aghanim's Scepters on his Harbinger. He was dishing out 500+ dmg per attack and his ult would easily wipe out 3 or 4 of us if we were clumped together. That was probably the most frightening single opponent I ever played against.

I have at last started getting Ganks!

I can get about 2 per game, which is great compared to my usual.

My only issue now that requires a bit more than just practice is leveling after level 10.
I always seems to go from 2 levels ahead of the pack to 5 levels behind.

Don't go back the moment you can afford an item (unless we're talking +2600 in cost), try and get it all at once if you can. Neut creep on your way there/back. Heroes give ridiculous amounts of xp so even if your teammate has the kill locked down, stay in xp range (If you're a range hero, just move around a whole bunch so you don't auto attack and snake the kill). Other than that, keep yourself alive, be in lanes/creeping as much as possible and you should be able to keep up, if not lead, in levels.

If you ever have problems catching up with someone, you have two options:

Boots of Travel (2200 for the recipe, 500 for the Boots of Speed)

    or

Mask of Insanity[?] (1100[?] for the recipe, 900 for the Mask Of Death)

I'm obviously a little foggy on the details for the second, but it's a great item. When activated it boosts attack and movement speed, but also increase damage taken. Still, great for pursuing. Boots of Travel are really expensive and IMO the gold is better spent elsewhere.

There's Also Eye of Skadi and S&Y. Both of which are situational, and the first being a late late game item.

However, Mask of Madness is nowhere near as useful as BoT. While it's ok for chasing enemies without stuns or disable. If they do have a disable or any ally you're going to take a huge amount of damage while chasing.

Also, for team Battles, BoT will allow you to quickly get to and from battle, while Mask of Madness is likely to get you stunned and focused (And you will die quickly).

MoM is just extremly situational and loses effectiveness once the game starts turning into team fights.

BoT + Assault Cuirass = excellent late-game pushing power.

Its excellent early to mid game. I always get it on SB and Void as it makes them brutal hero killers before most people have the life to deal with the dmg it allows them to put out, plus the increased bashes mean runners are few and far between. Follow it with an sny and anyone that's caught alone is in for a rough ride.

    Disruption Blade (purge)

    Hammer (stuns)

    Guinsoo's (disable again)

I think people focus too much on ganking heroes. It's really annoying when all you fight in Night Stalker, Gondar, Clinkz, Techies and Pudge.

Part of the game. Early hero ganking makes late game pushing much easier.

Each of these heroes is poor to unplayable in serious inhouses. Actually GOOD gankers would be int/heavy nuke heroes like Lina, Shadowfiend, Tinker, Rhasta, Tiny, etc.

My suggestion for learning how the game really works would be to avoid -em games at all costs, watch some clan replays, and try to get in on some clan games :).

You are all welcome to try and play with my clan sometime, join channel clan xsk.

Nobody plays anything but em, though. Which is weird, because in my experience they both take the same amount of time to play, and almost everyone ends up being level 25 in both, but gankers don't get this huge level advantage. Maybe that's why they don't play it. Or they're just pussies. Or both.

I've played approximately 2 public -AP/-AR matches with a US host.

We used to host public AP/AR games, until we realized w/o em mode it was a lot harder to overcome a poor teammate/leaver.

People play -em games because they don't take 2 hours to finish. Towers mean something, but not everything. Gold comes faster, and you can get the game going quicker. Less farming = more fun.

If you want serious play, yeah, stay away from -em. If you however want to cram in a lot of FUN games quickly, play -em.

No-one play him, ever. He is a horrible human being with no compassion or remorse.
I am led to beleive he would brutally beat his own girlfriend simply because he needs the money to buy a +75 damage with a 20% bonus to crit (2.2) blade, withwhich to pwnz innocent nuborz until the sunset and forever after.
