Wii died.

I noticed the other day the light was off. Went to turn it on, nothing.

Checked the cables in the back, everything was plugged in. Tested the power cable in a different socket, and nothing still. Fucking unbelievable. I have no idea what is going on. Anyone ever experience this? Don't know what could have caused this. I doubt it overheated or anything, since I haven't used it in days and it's in a well ventilated area. I'm thinking may it was fried by a lightning strike or something.

If it's dead then have i lost all my miis and save data and virtual console shit? God... How am I supposed to even get another one?

Fuck, and I think I have a game in there, how can I get it out?

Maybe a surge toasted the PSU?

Know anyone with a Wii, try another power brick?

what the hell is a power brick?

    The power supply.

Maybe that's what bit it, not the wii.

So I take it it's the brick inside that powercable. Do they even sell those in stores?

    Sorry if I was unclear.

Dunno about the real world, but on the internet:
    Nintendo Store

I wouldn't jump the gun and buy one, try and find one you can borrow.

could I test the power brick with a voltmeter? I don't know anyone with a wii, but I know where I could find a voltmeter.

Theoretically should work .. there's only 2 pins and the label on the bottom of the Wii says that it takes 12V in, so it should be really simple to test with a voltmeter.

Granted, even though I have a multimeter in my closet 4 feet away, I'm not willing to try it out and tell you for sure. :P I have a bad history with electricity and horrible burns on my hands. Because I do stupid things with electricity.

Oh, good idea. That should work. Just read the DC on the meter and compare it to the output stats printed on the brick. I'm assuming they're printed on the brick.

So a successful test should return 120V?

Is it possible for both the brick and the Wii to be dead?

    12 V, not 120V

EDIT: And yeah, it's possible, but not very likely ... unless you got hit by one killer power surge.

Yeah, don't measure the end that goes into the wall. Measure the Wii side. It should be 12vDC (not AC).

edit: sorry if that sounded condescending in any way, you never know how much handholding one does / does not need

My friends Wii was eerily off about a month ago. I brought my power brick over and it worked with that. He rang up Nintendo the next day, and apparently the brick has a built in surge protector. You just need to unplug it for 20 min iirc.

Edit: The same stuff happened to him too, storm that week, power light off, changed power sockets, etc. Funny thing was other things on the power board weren't shorted.

Get ahold of Nintendo's customer service department once you work out what the problem is, or if they have a local one near you head over, they can often fix/replace your Wii while you wait. If its the brick, email them and they'll generally send you out one straight away.

You can say what you want about Nintendo and their business practices but as a whole their customer service is excellent.

They bent over backwards to quickly get me up and running when my graphics started getting messed up. Call Nintendo.

Still, I haven't had a problem with them other than that.

If you haven't checked the RE4 thread, other people are getting that too, but ONLY with RE4.

MY Wii is making a lot of beeping/disc reading noise during RE4. At first I thought it was something in the room beeping, so I kept turning around, then realized that it was happening (one, two, three beep-like sounds) everytime I opened my inventory or checked the map... Then I realized that it was the Wii, reading the disc. Maybe I just never noticed it before.

This happened to me. I hadn't used it for a week or so; it was unplugged. When I plugged it back in, the LED didn't go on. It didn't occur to me there was anything wrong with this until a bit later. Anyway, I unplugged it again, and a day or two later plugged it back in and it worked again. Obviously you might not be so lucky, but it can happen so I'd say give it a couple of days then call Nintendo if it's still broken.

    Paul_IQ164 on
But obviously to make that into a viable anecdote you have to tart it up a bit.

I have a friend who worked in Nintendo's Customer Service and he said that the company is very accomodating when it comes to broken systems and parts so you should definitely call them and see if you can get a replacement for whatever it is that's broken (whether it's the power cord or the system itself).
