Okay guys, before we go much further, let's re-re-restate this:
IT'S A BETA.
- The graphics aren't nearly as good as they will look in the final game.
- Netcode is still being tested (that's what this is for!).
- Gameplay issues are still being tweaked.
You shouldn't be playing this to see what the game is like, because this isn't representative of the final game. You should be playing this to look for issues, and then report those issues in the Quake Wars Beta forums.
I think this is a good time for...
NEW THREAD RULES
- READ WHAT I JUST QUOTED.
- Read the email fileplanet sent you. It has a link to the beta forums and the password. There is a bug reports forum there to submit bugs in. Use it.
- Keep your bitching about technical or gameplay issues to the official beta forums as sent in your email. That's what they're there for. The developers don't read PA, they won't fix things you complain about here.
- Issues with balance and maps are okay to discuss here. If your client is desyncing or you get stutters, keep it on the beta forum. If you think it's bullshit that Strogg medics can't insta revive because you don't understand Spawn Hosts, talk about it here, but prepare to be called stupid (because you should know about spawn hosts)
- This isn't a Battlefield game. It isn't supposed to even resemble one. Just stop posting about Battlefield.
The skinny
As detailed in
the original thread, ET:QW has entered its public beta phase. Note that this is a
true beta: there are bugs. They are actually trying to fix problems. It is not a demo, nor does it look as snazzy as it probably will at release, due to file compression for the sake of distributing the beta to lots of users. Still, betas can be fun! Bugs can be entertaining!
What is ET:QW?
Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is a sequel-in-spirit to the free Return To Castle Wolfenstein multiplayer game of the same name. It is a class-based first person shooter boasting two factions (the familiar Strogg and humans from past Quake fame), five classes per faction, map-specific objectives, and a strong emphasis on teamwork.
It isn't anything like Battlefield. How many times do I have to say this? It's not any more like Battlefield than UT2k4 was.

What do I do?
Read
this extremely helpful site to catch up on all the game classes and map objectives.
Who do I play with?
Playing with pubbies sucks, so I'll be doing my best to maintain a list of everyone from these parts here, so we can find people to play with. Also, add the
PA vent server to your... uh, list of vent servers. For talking with.
If you didn't explicitly state your in-game name in the old thread, I didn't pick it up, since I assume a lot of people weren't able to or didn't want to use their forum name, so if you're not on the list, let me know (PMs will get my attention faster)!
Format: game name // forum name, unless it's obvious

News
6/23/07 - 8 AM EST - As you can see on the subscription website above, the fourth round of invites, which should be open to everybody, are going out soon. Based on when the other invites went out, it's reasonable to expect this'll all start at 9PST/12EST. Fileplanet's subscription service is buggy as hell though, so you could try earlier, and possibly get lucky.
12 PM EST - Cheapskate key distribution confirmed to start today at 2PM EST.
Nitty Gritty
Boring technical crap:
Getting the right resolution:
For those that want a custom resolution, head to:
My Documents\Enemy Territory Quake Wars Public Beta\base
And open up etqwconfig.cfg
Find these lines, customHeight is the height in pixels, etc. Put these values inside the quotes.
seta r_customHeight ""
seta r_customWidth ""
For these custom settings to be used, you need to find the following value and set it to -1 as I have here:
seta r_mode "-1"
and finally, the aspect ratio:
This is where you select your correct aspect ratio. "0" is 4:3, "1" is 16:9 and "2" is 16:10:
seta r_aspectRatio "2" for example
Have fun! :]
Also, just a note - I think I saw someone people earlier in the thread reinstall when they've fucked up their settings. You don't need to do that! Just delete this file, it'll be regenerated next time you start the game with the default options

Hope this helps

Edited for clarity.
Useful thread about FPS locking and unlocking. For those who don't know, the game locks your FPS at 30 to ensure a consistent play experience. If you have a nice system, though, you can unlock the FPS, although since the physics engine works at 30 FPS it isn't clear (to me, anyway) what this would accomplish.
Significant Known Bugs
The biggest problem right now is the screwy hit detection, which is being fixed in the next build of the game. It's apparently a result of several smaller problems in various parts of the game (physics, netcode) adding up to making it very tough to hit people with non-splashing weapons.
Posts
Of course, that could also put the kibosh on all the celebration from people with older computers who are running the beta
GeForce 7600GT
2.21 GHz AMD
1 GB RAM
Windows XP with onboard sound
and I get consistent FPS all the time at 1024x780. This is at default settings, no AA or AF.
Game - Track
I've just been adding everyone to my friends list
I also just made a "Penny Arcade" clan and started inviting people who are on the list.
still asks me to subscribe.
That's probably for the best, afaik there isn't a clan right now, although some people are running around with [PA] in front of their names. Note that I can't actually run the game until my newegg shipment arrives Monday :P so I really don't know what's going on inside.
Do you have a free account already that you are logged into? Cause I'm definitely not paying for my account, although I did sign it up for that stupid Comrade thing.
yeah i am logged into my free account.
Also, flushing my cache does not reset the Beta Hardware thing.
I'll finally download this when I get home from work. I just hope my computer can run it. It ran Quake 4 pretty well, so I'm hopeful that I can at least get a passable frame rate on this.

EDIT: I got past it, clearing your cookies and then putting in crazy high specs works. But now I'm getting the subscribe page.
Got my hopes up you did
5 EARTH MINUTES REMAINING, URG!
1. I have never played Quake in my entire life or know anything about it. Am I still ok to play it and enjoy it?
2. Why is the different from 2142? Saw some videos and I dunno. I don't see anything really different.
Have you played UT 2004? It's a blend of that and 2142. So you have objectives, vehicles, and support classes.
But then from UT comes taunting, bunny hopping and quick reflexes, and just plain style. You can walk up to soldiers that have fallen (but can be revived) and put a few rounds into their head to put them out for good, the weapons are all different and stylized with different purposes. I don't know what else to explain, it's just plain awesome.
Oh, since it's Strogg VS Humans, check this out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strogg
Gives you an idea what Strogg are like.
Jesus christ. This is either a pretty good troll or a really dumb post.
It's not a mix of UT and 2142. It's a mix of Enemy Territory and Quake. Get it, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars? See, there's this game called Enemy Territory, which was a free Return to Castle Wolfenstein standalone multiplayer expansion, that introduced objective based team gameplay. Instead of "Capture the flag" or "Deathmatch", it was "Defend the Fuel Depot" or "Repair the Bridge" or "Steal the gold." This is where ET:QW gets it's gameplay from. Definitely not Battlefield, considering there's no team tickets, or capturing a map, or persistant unlocks, or anything else that's a staple of the Battlefield series besides vehicles and the use of the word "Fireteam". Which have both been in other multiplayer games before even BF1942.
And the fast gameplay comes from the Quake series, not UT. As do the Strogg.
nobody play ET or something
Also, beta.
I wasn't allowed to play FPSes back then :P
Seriously, what the fuck is going on here.
The objective based teamplay really started with ET, as did (I believe) the gaining of experience and ranks and such.
Also, you're complaining about bunny hopping? It was annoying in battlefield, but this isn't battlefield. Quake and UT, two of the heaviest of the heavy weight multiplayer fps, were fast paced and encouraged jumping because that was part of the mechanics. It's not built in to skill in the battlefield series, and as such, is annoying, but there's no reason to shun jumping if it's pretty integral to the system.
They're staggering the keys, too, so don't be discouraged. It's not actually supposed to work until tomorrow, so unless you wait until tomorrow night you'll probably be able to get one. There's always Sunday, too.
no, no its not. knowing anything about enemy territory or quake might've helped point you towards the truth. alas.
are there any fansites detailing all the different weapons and classes? the official site isn't very informative.
Not only does it have bunnyhopping, the strogg have jetpacks.
You might have to actually aim upwards a little bit!
I am really baffled at what the fuck people were expecting from this game. It says both Enemy Territory and Quake right in the title. You don't even need to read anything about the game to know that it's probably going to be kinda like ET and kinda like Quake. To me that means it'll have team objectives and be really fast paced and frantic. Apparently to everyone else that means it's a Battlefield clone.O_o
Edit: Yeah Mono, I guess a lot of people never played ET (which isn't hard to imagine, it was great but semi-obscure). Having not played Quake is harder to imagine, but still probable. It really is a combination of the best in multiplayer fps'ing that I've experienced. Fast-paced skill-based gameplay with team oriented objectives. Plus, I like this system of objectives much better than how Battlefield does it.
Edit2: I'm heading online and into vent right now if anyone wants to join. If you need help feel free to ask.
which is why I wan't a gosh darned beta key or demo or something damnit
Don't worry, you'll like it.
I made my inferences from the screenshots I've seen the past few months, which made it look like a semi-realistic (aside from the scifi aspects) team based shooter, given the art style and what is happening in the images. I made a mistake. No big deal. I'll likely give it a try, but I haven't really enjoyed a fast pasted shooter since the original UT.
Killing downed enemies with head shots, unlimited jump/sprint, taking clothes, and the guns can't possibly be worse than BF2.
Sounds like nothing but improvement.
How can the guns not be worse than BF2? I think they are. That's my only gripe with the game, but it's a pretty big one.
They're being fixed, stop bitching about it already.
