So, as you all know the first two Dragon Quest games were ported in a collection on the GBC a while back. Well, I managed to get my hands on Dragon Quest/Warrior and played it for two reasons. One was that I love Dragon Quest VIII and I wanted to see how the series started, and second just because, historically this is a very important game. It's the ancestor of JRPGs, after all.
So I played it. It's a very basic game. You only have yourself, there's very little equipment (and it's rather pricey) and all new skills are magic spells you learn at set levels. Also, random encounters, lots and lots of random encounters. And only one save point, I was so happy when I learned the spell that lets you return to the castle instantly.
My habit of always talking to every NPC served me well in this game, as a lot of them had useful information, some of it vital to actually figuring out what to do!
I only really grinded once, hunting down those Gold Golem monsters to get money to buy the best sheild in the game (it was the last time I actually needed money). Of course, getting lost due to the game pretty much telling you "there is evil afoot, figure out how to smite it" as the sole bit of direction probably helped me a lot. I was overleveled by the end thanks to said getting lost. (after beating it I checked an FAQ and the suggested levels were about 3-4 lower then what mine were at the time). I raped the final boss.
I'd say it took me about 20 hours to beat the game over three days. It was strangely addicting. However, I doubt I'll play it again any time soon, it's just too basic, and since I now know where everything is it won't be nearly as interesting, seeing as half the fun was figuring out where to go.
I must admit it had one of the more amusing endings of any video game I've played.
Walking around the world, free of monsters, with everyone in the game telling you how awesome you are? I like.
TL;DR: I played Dragon Quest, I liked it for what it is. Also, this can be a general Dragon Quest talk thread.
Now to play Dragon Quest II!

Overall I thought it was an excellent game.
Loto's Armor and Amulet, the Sun stones, Silver Harp and Rain staff, and I completely missed an entire town for a few hours somehow.
What I mean by "grinding" is "stop, wander around in circles and fight monsters" If I'm trying to do something, like say explore this new area of the overworld, then I don't concider it grinding.
But god damn, IV I just can't stop going back to. Best of the series, bar none.
Pointless story. Srsly though the kid got him the sword and then we beat the game.
I remember the world map was shaped like earth, with the same continents and stuff.
It's fun.
Also, I've beaten 1, 2, 7, and 8 and am currently playing 5 but I kind of got side-tracked. And I really tried to play 3 but it actually hit a point of too much grinding. And this is coming from a guy who beat 7, which could require 2-3 hours of grinding a job class. I don't even remember where I was in 3 but it was some dumb dungeon where I had to gain like 5 more levels to survive but the enemies outside were too weak to be worth it and the ones inside were too strong for me to kill. That's when I just said forget it.
Then you'll LOVE
;-)
EDIT: Damn you agoaj
That game made me sad.

Did anyone else die a little on the inside when the translation of Dragon Warroir 4 for PS1 was scrapped?
(Bloody teaser in the back of the DW7 manual)

Heh, that guardian of Loto's Armor.
It's best to cast the silencing spell on it.
That, alone, is classic.
Dragon quest 3 was also a great game - seeing your town grow, choosing your own characters and job classes was a blast... and then when you enter the last fourth of the game - loved how it ended.
As simple as it was, I really liked the "overworld" music in the original Dragon Warrior.
Oh man, didn't you actually have to bring up a menu to go up or down stairs?
My Backloggery
For NES, yeah.
But at least it had the 'Door' command. The greatest crime of DWII was needing you to enter the item menu, pick the right party member, then pick the right key to open a door.
Thank goodness that'd been shortened to just pressing 'A' in the remakes.

IV and VI are tied for me, but I tend to play VI more often because it's less offensive on the eyes.
I'd kill to get a copy of the PSX remake of IV though.
I managed to get my hands on Dragon Quest VII! Now I can play every one that's available in english!
It's not pointless. I remember when I got stuck when I was a kid and I lent the game out to someone I hardly knew so he could get me the sword. I played lots of NES with friends. Do I know you? :P

Five months from now make sure you tell us how you liked the first battle.

I've played through all of them, and that just recently.
1 is so much fun.
2 is the hardest
3 has the best port and a really neat story
4 is a god damn classic
5 and 6 are really good, even though the guide I used was pretty light on the story
7 is long but has interesting classes and a fun mechanic
8 is legendary
I could also be completely wrong.
Either way... *crosses fingers*
I'll try to grab a link when I get off of work.
Pata, I didn't see you mention it but you absolutely have to try DQ4. There is no GBA remake, sadly, but grab an NES and find a copy (although I think it's still rather pricey on eBay). It's got the classic Dragon Quest trappings, but the way you experience the world through five different chapters — four shorter chapters that focus on the various party members and then the long, final chapter with the Hero you named as he/she goes around the world, rounding up all of the other party members and then suiting up for adventure. It was a very different method of storytelling, at least compared to other NES-era RPGs, which I think is why I love it so much. You don't get as much of that mid-game slowdown and boredom because you're always starting up with new characters every few hours.
2 is pretty cool at first, but before endgame it gets really stupid hard. You have to find five or six symbol items by searching in arbitrary locations. Sure, there are hints, but you basically can't do it without a guide. One of them is in a secret area of this tiny building in the middle of nowhere, for example. Ugh.
