Every year there are some deals in and around draft time that both astonishes and bewilders you. What are the transactions and picks this year that caught you off guard?
Personally, these are just two of many WTF moments:
- The Predators getting rid of Vokoun - After the departure of both Timonen and Hartnell, it was just somewhat surprising to see Vokoun get moved as well, what with the play of Mason this past season as well as the whole selling of the franchise drama. Sadly, after all of these moves, the Preds just got suckier, the Red Wings just got some free points, and it is way less likely that Kariya and Forsberg will be going back to Nashville. Though I can see Lady Bing Paul sticking around because of the fat paycheck that Preds management might throw in his direction.
- The Kings going off the board with the 4th pick to select Thomas Hickey - I was at a NHL Draft Watch Party sponsored by the Kings for their season ticket holders and I was at first shocked by the pick of someone whose name I had not even heard mentioned all week. The fact that practically no one there could hop online and do some research on this Hickey kid meant that there were a lot of disappointed and shellshocked Kings fans the rest of the afternoon. But a day after the fact and hearing that Dean Lombardi is really high on this kid and believed that he would not fall past #8 makes me want to wait and see what it is about Hickey that made him invaluable.
There's an NHL draft? Why? Last time I checked all of their stars were in their forties.
wait, what?
it's all the ridiculously young guys that get all the press now
Last time I checked Chelios, Roenick, Jagr, and Federov were all still playing. That's four Brett Favre aged players (actually Chelios is 45) I came up with without even thinking. Yzerman just retired this year.
The NHL is loaded with old farts and I can't imagine that it has helped them over the years.

Don't know who they are and don't really care. All I am saying is it is strange that I haven't watched the NHL in probably 10 years and most of the stars from back then are still playing.
They're all systematically retiring. And the new kids will be better than they ever were and if you've never heard of Sydney Crosby you've obviously been ignoring anything even remotely hockey related. Like, the second you hear something that even resembles hockey your brain turns off, cause seriously that boy has been plastered everywhere for years now.

The Wook is the authority on Southern California.
I would vote to make him governor any day of the week.
Eh. Maybe. I just got back into the NBA when I didn't think I would so maybe there's a chance.

On the other hand, it meant that they didn't get to pick till like the third round, so maybe they did overpay just a tad.
