For this game I have to acknowledge Kuribo, for if he had not rampardos'd me then i would not have been able to anticipate pong's team and i may have lost
just go with the biweekly, triweekly is stupid, and monthly is too far apart
Seconded. biweekly means that a tourney can take up to a week and still give another week after that to prepare different teams. Plus, newcomers wont have to wait as long for another tourney to roll around
Monthly! The fact that tournaments will be "too far apart" is a good thing. If we have too many tournaments we will start to get bored of them. And the tournament itself is a week long.
We have a single elimination tournament every month, just like this one.
Then for those who want it... anyone play Monster Rancher? We could do tournaments like that in the space between tournaments. Just so those of us who want to battle can test our teams or whatever.
For those who haven't played Moster Rancher, the tournaments work like this:
Everyone fights everyone else one time. Whoever has the most wins is the winner. In the event of a tie, there is a sudden death match between the would-be winners.
The beauty of this is that we can have a small tournament, as you only need 4 people for it to work.
Example:
The other nice thing about this is that you can fight your matches anytime. You'll be able to fight whenever it is convenient, and we won't need to worry about hurrying it along.
The only problem is that it will get out of hand if we have 8 or more people who want to fight, since everybody would need to do 7 or more battles.
@taya, it could go the other way as well, and if people aren't versing other players for a whole month they may get bored and fall out of the competitive spirit
i think i'm going to have to stand firm on my biweekly, weekend tournaments
"In a major upset, Shujin Katana beat Ashton Dragon."
you fuckers!
Hey, that was a major upset. I was one of the favorites to win this tournament, you know. You need to win the tournament so that I don't look bad :P
I'm still of the opinion that tournaments should be monthly. People can just have friendly matches in between. I don't see the need to have mini tournaments or whatever in between.

Man... So was I and I got dropped in Round 1.
Against a wind chime.
WIND CHIME.
EDIT: And Ashton, the point of the mini-tournaments would be to keep people coming back. Scheduled matches feel much more official... there's a sort of pride knowing you won a contest rather than just beat a bunch of random people. For me, Mushy's tournament is the only reason I even started playing Pokemon again; I lost interest when I realized that the G&T / SE++ throwdown wasn't really going to end up happening.
I think the only way to truly solve this is to make a poll thread that discusses the pros and cons of each choice, and seeing what the true majority voice is
or we can have a private one so the results aren't being diluted by nonpokemanners
i say no to 3v3, we build our pokemon knowing they can depend on the 5 other players, a team of only 3 would be completely different, and i think you'd see a lot less drainers/annoyers etc and it'd just be hard hitters
Also... I'm realizing that bi-weekly is probably the best choice, assuming we've got interest in tournaments in the slightest.
Some of us don't want to wait a month, others don't want to fight every two weeks...
Logical solution: Every two weeks we have a tournament, and those who do not have the Poke-bloodlust can skip every other one, so they only battle once a month. It's not like participation in every tournament is required.
What would end up happening is we'd have a big tournament every month, and a smaller one halfway through the month.
the first bi-weekly match we hold as red mage darion's point system, where everyone fights everyone, most points wins (this is good for those that feel they've been knocked out prematurely, for they can still reclaim their honor etc) it will be nearly self sufficient, you simply post EVERYONE'S pokemon on the front page, and they just PM their results to blarney or mush so that no one knows who wins until the last fight
the second bi-weekly match will be held in the conventional knock out fashion, where the best of the best make it to the finals
how's that sound? that way, you have a little variety, but still retain the "importance" of monthly matches
the only problem is you would need to have no more than 10 people in the point system matches, so i guess the people who made it to the quarter finals in the conventional could do the point system? 32 people is 1024 matches, and 32 battles is something like 10 hours for one person, so that's not realistic
Here's an idea. We come up with some sort of ranking/point/whatever system. During a month, you can do official challenges to people ranked higher than you, and those official matches alters the players rank. At the end of the month, the top 32 are the ones allowed into the tournament.
That way we have formal matches all month long, but still just monthly tournaments. At the same time though, there's an issue in that more casual players, or players that don't have much time to play in a month, won't get a chance to play in the tournament. Also, what happens if the #1 ranked person just vanishes off the face of the forum for a month?
Barring that, I say bi-weekly tournaments, with every other one only 16 player.
how do you choose which 16 players can compete? everyone who makes it to the second round? plus walk-ins in the place of people who have received byes?
You cant just pick the people who do the best; that discourages people who are just starting (and sucks for people who just had bad luck in their first matchup)

i'm in the finals
lousy transformers, taking up my time
at any rate I suck
Triweekly tournaments or monthly tournaments?
Everyone keeps ignoring me when I ask.
http://www.audioentropy.com/
monthly "set" tourneys. it makes it easier for whoever is managing these things.
and Shoe, i'm guessing you BP to rampardos?
i think the tourneys should last less than 5 days though, you know
if the whole tourney can take place on like a weekend, the biweekly would make much more sense
Seconded. biweekly means that a tourney can take up to a week and still give another week after that to prepare different teams. Plus, newcomers wont have to wait as long for another tourney to roll around
i know i was saying woot monthly but now it seems like a stupid idea
if we can have it biweekly with the tournament on a weekend i think it'd be perfect
i wouldn't even mind being an official (as long as i could also compete)
i agree with keeping everyhting o na weekend/close to a weekend
"In a major upset, Shujin Katana beat Ashton Dragon."

It was simultaneously amusing and frustrating watching Lazarus run like a little bitch whenever my Crobat showed up in our (re)match.
