I played another game on Chieftan, was harder.. I was ahead of everyone for awhile. I smashed Russia into the stone age, but everyone else was getting too big for me. I think I spent so much time smashing Russia I fell behind, or something.

Nah, the best is when you're industrious and you start out with stone and marble nearby. Whammo, you can easily snag any wonder to fill in for any weakness you may have otherwise.
Mighty generals and warlords, the mighty byzantine empire stands on a crossroads. One path leads to ruin and devastation while the other leads to glory and victory! I come seeking you advice on which direction to steer the empire!
Here's the map of my current empire
Additional Info:
-I have a pop 2 city of paris farr to the right thats always under revolt, but I refuse to give it back to the French
-Ethiopia and Greece are vassals to Arabia
-France and Korea are vassals to the Zulu
-China is a close ally
-Everyone hates China, Arabia and it's slaves are already at war with it
-Spain is the lone continent out at sea and is a bitch, but thus far, distance, and more pressing issues have forced me to ignore Isabel
-We just ended a massive world war between Arabia+Greece+Byzantium(me)+China vs Zulu+Korea+French, Ethiopia was at war exclusively with me
-My southern border has been fortified with a line of machine gunners, while my expeditionary force is resting inside conquered Ethiopian cities to the north
-The zulu and ethiopians are furious with me
War with the zulu will be extremely difficult, as their armies are vast and not that far out of date. Not to mention their vassals may prove to be nuisances. Although I know that France has no real power left. I think China would join me in a war against the zulu in a little bit, however the last war they were in, the zulu took a few of their cities.
I've pretty much given up on war in civ4 as no matter what i do i lose horribly "oh, i have an 88% chance of winning this battle, those odds sound pretty good...fuck" that happens pretty much every battle..or i'll lose cities being guarded by masses of tanks, mechanized infantry, marines and paratroopers to assaults by war elephants and grenadiers

Silly question -- why would 5 gold help so much?
Also, is the steam version of this activated yet?
Massive boost to commerce with minimal research, which means a nice advantage in techs super early plus less of a painful hit as you start to expand which means sexification.
Of course, your capital's growth will be a bit slower than normal, but still, any time you start with more than four or five revealed and usable resources, it's a great start.
Just picked up Beyond the Sword at the local Gamestop, apparently it was the only copy they got in and lucky for me no one preordered there. After I get the hang of the new features someone needs to make a Game On thread, or just turn this into one. Hopfully it goes better than the one time I played Civ 4 with the PA crowd, where 6 of us started on one continent, and the 7th player started on a continent all to himself.
So anyone got a ton of spare time to play multiplayer match? I've never tried multi before and I'm rubbish at the whole army thing so I'll probably die instantly, but it would be nice to try sometime.
And for anyone's who's already finished a game of BOTS, does it really make non-warfare victories viable competitively or is military domination still really the only way you're going to win?

Well now this was an interesting few turns of play.
The Zulu once again declare war against me and managed to slip through my machine gun line with an army so vast that when you scroll over the army, the unit list does not display all the enemy units.
Pulling back my Elite and modernized standing army and my strategic infantry reserves, I mobilized them at a fort right next to this massive horde. Numbering about 20 infantry, 5 machine guns, 4 cavalry, several artillery and about half a dozen obsolete riflemen, I launch an all out offensive against the enemy.
Supported by air ship bombardments and artillery strikes, the brave men of the 1st Expeditionary Force cut a bloody swathe through masses of zulu grenadiers and cuirassiers. With nearly 20 kills, I was more than a little dismayed that their army list... didn't shrink one bit.
Consolidating my position, I pressed end turn and holy shit was I in for a shock.
For TEN MINUTES the Zulu AI threw wave after wave after wave of grenadiers and musketmen right into my army. The machine guns easily took down the first few waves... until the sheer volume of men completely overwhelmed their positions, forcing the infantry to respond and they too held off against endless swarms of cheap enemy troops.
At the end, my grand army was now a bare dozen, all in critical condition. While the zulu horde still had a sizable army of 15 full strength musketmen and grenadiers. Fleeing back into the nearest city to heal up, while pulling out all the machine gunners across the empire, I can only prey that the zulu are not able to bring up another army such as the one they so callously threw at my defenses.

Is there a strat guide or anything that details what things like Marble or Dye or Gold do for you, in plain english? Don't say "The In Game Help", I'm not at my home machine.
Also: Marathon Mode, ya or nay? The extra turns sounds fun, especially on a huge freakin' map with a billion AIs...
Use your military leaders as specialists, having the faster production speeds isn't really useful imo at the mid to late game where your units take 1-4 turns to produce. Might as well use better quality troops.

Question 1: every resource is either hooking you with extra health, extra happiness, extra gold, or providing your troops with metal to cleft opponents in t'wain. If you hover over 'Resource X', the small display will show you what kind of bonus you're getting. I'm sure there's a full list at CivFanatics since there's a full list for damn near everything you could ask for on those forums.
Question 2: I'd advise Epic. Marathon is John Holmes-esque looooooooong.

Marathon is popular with people who want more time to play around with various eras before being forced to upgrade, but the real trouble is that it is unbalanced in favor of warmongering.
I'm picking this up tomorrow after work. I'd love to get in on some multiplayer action, but that would be bad for two reasons.
1. I suck at Civ 4, much as I love it.
2. Multiplayer matches are probably really long, and work is a cruel mistress.
Yeah I'm not sure I can still do those incredibly long into the night and early morning matches we used to.

I just re-installed Civ 4 on my new comp. It's got 2 giggers of RAM, dual core, and all those goodies and really runs quite nicely (even in endgame against a lot of folks).
Even for me, this was a pretty quality start, though I got bogged down fighting Carthage and the Aztecs at the same time. My favorite part is how the idiot... uh... whoever builds Istanbul... left it defended with a single warrior when I decided to farm them for their two workers letting me seize their capital about 40 turns into the game... and then I moved my palace there to be more centralized once the western expansion began.
I also nailed three quests... 7 stables (+food in every stable), 7 triremes (+commerce) 7 harbors (+ commerce in every harbor), though every damn other random event was "ha ha fuck you." Fucking volcanos and hurricanes.
But seriously... this is how your empire should look on Noble difficulty around the midgame. :P
Spoiler for large images
I'm also so far ahead of these fuckos that I can pick and choose who to slaughter with cavalry once I get my economy turned back around and settled into the democracy and whatnot I just changed to.
It's always scary when Aroduc starts pointing out his civ strategies. After the last thread I realized I'm not aggressive enough by half when I play this game.
So does anybody know how this Steam thing works with the add on? Haven't ever used it before so I'm clueless how this would work out. Someone mentioned something about validating Civ or some such...
Yeah, I have a serious problem myself with not building enough cities fast enough and not building enough military units. I try to appease my nearest neighbor and convert them to my religion while only building a token defense when declared war upon.

Getting the hang of it, either way.
Not if you get Beyond the Sword.
Unless you want to play the scenarios.

You guys and your little empires are so silly. I'll play a game tonight and show you a real empire.

Any tips-for me, once I invest in military units my economy tanks.

If I buy it off Steam, do I need to have an active internet connection anytime I play it? I've never used Steam before.
If so, is there a different digital download service where this isnt the case?
