new optical SATA drive opening and closing by itself?

Just upgraded from an LG H30 (sata) to an LG H62 (sata).

The new drive keeps opening and closing by itself. If I disable in the device manager (which shows the correct model name) it'll stop.

I've heard this might be related to a trojan or something but I'm pretty sure there isn't anything on my computer.

No strange processes; Anti-vir and ad-aware find nothing.

Now next step I'll try is putting back in the H30 and see if the behaviour continues.. but anyone have any suggestions while I do that?

update: H30 doesnt appear to have the issue...

update: H62 back in, doing it again. hmm

Make sure the drive tray can actually close all the way. I had a DVD+R/W drive do this once, turned out the face of the drive tray didn't quite fit into the indentation on the face of the drive, as a result the drive couldn't close all the way so the motor continually tried opening and closing it.

Update the firmware of the drive.

no firmware updates available, and it's not CONSTANTLY closing and opening, just periodicalyl or related to things I do on the desktop.

for example, I'm pretty sure if I open a new firefox window, it opens.

After thoroughly considering your problem, my best conclusion is that it's heat related. Perhaps something is shorting out due to heat, like a clip inside the case near the drive.

I had a motherboard with onboard sound once, and when it was hot out, the sound would stop working. I found out it was because a clip was ever so slightly warping and making contact with the sound chip, causing it to cease functioning.

This happened to me with a Sony 5-disc cd changer cd player back in '94.

It turned out the solder melted to the point that the Open/Close hard line on it's motherboard was always on a closed circuit.

yeah like if it comes to it, there' no problem exchanging it for another, but I just want to rule out it being some fixable issue first

I second that this may be a bell-book-and-candle job. Otherwise, seems like a circuitry issue. It may even be too small to see compared to the heating errors described above. You should just exchange it. Have you emailed the relevant tech-support guys yet? I know they're usually useless for any hardware, but you never know.
