I didn't want to hijack the other guys thread as he hasn't (stated) he's hit the jackpot with the one suggestion so far.

This is going way back for me trying to remember this book... but I've always been meaning to try and find it, and haven't had much luck.

When I was but a wee lad I used to go visit my dad, and for awhile he had this book I used to flip through. It was about all sorts of mythical creatures and such. I know it had a bunch of monsters in it, and I "think" it may have had some good or at least mischievous ones in the beginning, before getting to the downright evil ones later on. The book was illustrated, and that's what I loved about it... I remember the artwork in it to be VERY good.... of course history could be clouding my judgement, but hey... it's what I remember.

Google isn't a lot of help, since you can imagine that searching for anything fairy/faerie related or demon/monster related turns up a metric ton of stuff, and I can't remember enough to refine it down to a point to search it.

Maybe Barlowe's Guide to Fantasy or Barlowe's Guide to Extraterrestrials? I know the guide to Extraterrestrials has been out for 20 some years, not so sure about the other.

Sounds like it might be Where the Wild Things Are. Typically a book read at a young age.

Should have been a rock star.

Hmm, the harpers fantasy one is way too new (the book m looking for would have been printed in the mid 80's at absolute latest, as I forget exactly which year I was looking at it, but it's most likely at least early 80's late 70's.
The extraterrestrials one isn't it either, this one had no aliens in it.

And it's not where the wild things are, great book in its own right, read many a time when younger, but the book I'm looking for follow no story or lead... it's basically like an illustrated guidebook for a bunch of mythical creatures. Each page is essentially a full illustration of one creature with a description/background on it (either on the same page or the opposing page, kinda fuzzy on that).

If I could just remember a bit more about it I could probably narrow a google search down to less astronomical/useless entries, but having no luck yet.

I don't suppose it was a D&D Monster Manual or something?

    Nope, no such luck.

It doesn't make it any easier that a lot of the searches I come up with don't yield any actual images from the resulting hits... and that's about the only way I'd identify it without having some more information to go on. D:

Time Life did a whole series of books back then called The Enchanted World series, sounds like what you might be describing. I have them in my basement somewhere...

    Fraid not.

    :(

Tough one to find I guess.

The artwork was (from my memory) in a style sort of like a more realistic early elfquest, or a more fantasy themed and less realistic look of some of Boris Vallejo's work.

It's killin me that I can't remember much of it.. but this was half a lifetime ago for me, or longer... so it's been awhile!

I had a friend who had that book.

The only thing I remember was that there were many naked gnome women. Seriously. Gnome-tits galore.
