My only problem with planes was that I liked to try to low fly with the p-51 mustang styled plane, going under bridges and between trees, see how long I could stay a few meters above the ground.
I hit invisible trees, because they wouldn't appear until after I'd hit them, because I was moving too fast for the engine to handle. In a WW2 plane.
I don't think I need to explain what happened the first time I tried to do this in the jet.
So I lost interest and just flew the helicopter, harrier (vtol for ground stuff, jet for getting places high above the ground) and jetpack. I had more fun driving cars than the planes because the engine really couldn't handle it properly so I couldn't do anything really interesting. I wanted to fly under every bridge in the game in one run through. Impossible if you can't see the trees.

What version were you playing? PS2? I never had a problem with this on the Xbox. I assume PC players didn't have the problem either.
Completely tangentially... Anyone else really hate how the Jetpack was handled in San Andreas?

I used to, but then I realized that control-wise they really couldn't have done it differently given the control scheme. It would have been nice if they had given you the opportunity to switch modes like the Hydra and let you cut loose Rocketeer-style.

I was playing it on a pc that had much more power than a ps2. It was a game engine limitation, probably something to do with how they code the scenery pop up. It was just designed for car and motorcycle speeds, and couldn't handle a plane doing a low shallow dive.

The biggest turnoff I had with previous GTA games was that whenever I die or get busted by the cops, I would lose all my weapons and everything and that's fine I would just have to reload to a previous save file. Except that it takes like 1 min to load the save file (I play it on the PS2) and then I would have to walk to the mission starter icon and redo everything. That was pretty annoying in San Andreas where the loading was really bad.
If they fix this for GTA IV, I'll be very happy. Just make failing missions and getting busted by cops not penalize you so much so I don't have to reload the game.

If you dated the cop chick in SA to 100% you would get to keep your weapons every time you were busted. Although having to drive from the desert shithole she lived in to San Fierro to dance was a chore in itself.

Really it makes sense if you get arrested, you keeping your weapons seem like a bit of a stretch in terms of realism even for GTA.

The good thing with her was that she was situated in San Fierro so it was easy to get her up 100%. I never managed to get that hillbilly chick at the weapons range though, bitch liked skinny dudes and like hell I was going to try to lose all that muscle I've built up in the game.
I guess I was one of the few that really enjoyed the RPG-lite features in SA. I enjoyed training my CJ from a black beanpole into supershaftman. I also liked the dating aspects and the improvable skills.

I think the griping about the removal of planes from GTAIV is both silly and pointless. GTAIV features are much (but hopefully not too much) smaller map area, which is an enormously good thing (way to go SA for making me for 10 minutes to reach anything fun!). This map is packed with towering buildings. Nobody really flies planes in cities, just over them. Plus, the choppers are still in, which I find to be enormously more rewarding than planes anyway when flying around a city. Planes are a pain to land anywhere interesting, but the choppers just set right down for you to hop out and look around. I hope they put a jetpack in the game somehow, but with the Rocketeering thing Kreutz mentioned. The only thing I didn't really like about the jetpack is that it was pretty slow. Honestly, there's a whole list of things that I think GTAIV could drop from the series and I would be happy:
1. That terrible RPG system. I don't want to have to drive anything for twenty hours before I'm actually pretty good at it.
2. Collecting hidden items to get something stupid as a reward. In VC, every 10 or so hidden got you an increasingly more useful item that spawned at your properties. In SA, you got something stupid like increased lung capacity for collecting an entire set.
3. Having to collect whole sets of hidden items for rewards instead of getting incremental rewards.
4. Getting the really good stuff only after getting 100% completion. Again, this is more an SA thing, but I still really, really don't want it to come back.
5. Get rid of the awful relationship garbage. Seriously, I don't want to deal with dating a digital girl for any reason, especially not to move the game forward. This isn't a Japanese game.
6. Not being able to simply restart a mission as opposed to failing/dying, reloading the game, driving back to the mission start, and doing it all over. Huge waste of time.
And further complaints that go on and on. However, if they keep the game largely in the vein of GTAIII an VC, just in a much larger and more detailed city, GTAIV will still probably be a must buy for me.

That's the exact sort of annoying crap I don't want to have to deal with in GTAIV. If I have to do a series of zany missions to be able to purchase a minigun, fine. I'll have fun with the missions, then have fun with the minigun. The game making you think you have to alter your stats to get a benefit by doing annoying, repetitive things like going to the gym and repeatedly taking a fake woman out on fake dates? That sounds like work to me.

Or at least, the shooting and driving parts, that working out shit was pretty terrible
Meh, you did them 4 or 5 times during the game then you never had to bother about them again. I don't think I ever managed to lose a rank in general fitness during my 60+ hour savefile.

Yep, same story for me. The pop-in scenery in GTA:SA was miles worse than anything in Vice or III. I don't remember it at all in the latter two, actually, but I'd have fucking CARS popping up regularly in SA.
This is the most assinine argument. "planes don't just fly around cities". I don't care. It's GTA. I want to fly around a city. I want to tool about in planes and jump out and parachute. If you don't, I don't care.
I had actually totally forgotten about the Parachutes.
Those were fucking awesome.
I remember shooting down a chopper from that really tall building in Los Santos, and then jumping off to avoid a second, floating down on my chute while the first chopper spun out of control on fire around me, landing on a busy overpass.
I hated all the extra stuff they shoved in GTA:SA. my favourite game from the new 3d ones was easily GTA 3, it had the most enjoyable (but not realistic) level layout. The only thing I miss when going back and playing it now is the lack of speedy motor bikes.

When I make a character in Mass Effect or other RPGs, I always make them look like me. Which is white.
It has nothing to do with not wanting to look black, and everything to do with wanting the character to resemble me.
Im not saying this is my opinion, I dont mind, because the story in SA tied closely to his ethnicity.
What I mean is for some people, playing a game they want to associate with the protagonist.
The same could be applied to a woman playing a game where the main character is a man.
I know its not likely, but dont dismiss it as plain racist when it can be easily explained with just wanting to role play and associate with the character more.
Of course, the guy in question could well be basing his opinion on racism I dont know.
I couldn't stand all the "Gangsta" shit in SA, it's just not my thing. If the character were black in GTA 3 however, it wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

It's racist. If you don't play games because you don't identify with the character, you wouldn't play tomb raider because the lead is a woman, or oblivion because the lead male is insanely buff. Unless he refuses to play any game where the lead isn't a presumably fairly puny male of limited intelligence, his refusal to play SA based on the character's ethnicity is by definition racist.
When I create a boxer in fight night, they're generally white. That's not racist. If Fight Night only allowed the creation of black boxers, and I didn't play it because "I'm white" that would be both racist and functionally retarded.

Seemed to work well enough for me on the PC version, just slow. Still, I used it to do a lot of exploring in Venturas.
