Seriously, who the hell will even give Saints Row 2 a shot with GTA4 out?
Yo. Yo. Sup? Hey. REPRESENT! Hiya! Hey. Mornin'.
Quite a few people, there can never be enough pedestrian shanking. Brand loyalty is a moot point in an arena where quality is synonymous with carbon-copy.
I have a bad feeling that GTA4 will be short . . . it is just in my gut. How long has this game been in development again? Have any developers made the "quality over content" comment yet like Bethseda did with Oblivion?
Saints Row is a fun distraction, but it won't really dent GTA4 at all.
I have SR just to run around when I feel like it, but now I have a PSP and Vice City Stories, so it won't be played much anymore. And then VCS won't be played once GTA4 comes...

It's been stated that GTA4 will take over 100 hours to complete.
Even taking out the item hunts (of which there only appears to be one, hidden packages) and stunt jumps and all that and you're still looking at a lengthy game.

They've made a "It takes testers playing four hours a day a good two weeks to play through the single-player game" comment.
Re: GTA: Whereever, I doubt they'd ever go outside of the US, but they really should make the next GTA game in a GTA-Alternate Universe version of Paris. They went to Paris in Midnight Club II and it was glorious. Plus, Jean Reno would have to appear which would also be glorious. Possibly gloriouser.
That number surprises me. I probably had upwards of forty under my belt before I even got a third into the storyline of each, of course, I never finished any.
Isn't it 8 hours or less to walk from one side of the map to the other?
Well it's certainly not that long, but without real definitive proof I don't see how beating SA is possible within 8 hours. III and VC, sure. But SA is just so goddamned huge with so many story missions.
Oh. Speed runs. Okay, I'll take that as proof, but still, fuck that. Most people don't do speed runs, because most people actually like enjoying the games they buy.
Well, the question was how long the storyline would take if you didn't fuck around. Considering the nature of the games, driving and divesting large quantities of generic evil minions of their pantaloons as quickly as possible, it's not unthinkable to call the first two genuine under eight hour experiences. Andreas is somewhat inflated in comparison, but it's hardly an epic either.
I suppose that's true. But if someone asks me if San Andreas is an eight hour game, I would still say no. Mainly because no one has speed-run-level perfection going through it for the first time, nor are they skipping cutscenes, etc.
I want to know how someone is both interested in GTA4 and also has 8.8 hours logged into Barbie Fashion Show.
If I were you basil, I'd burn that steam account. That might not even be enough.
It's not my fault, this is a Team Fortress signature linked to a gigantic signature database run by Sudmuffin. Suds, whatever. It seems to be April first where he lives.
I'll put it this way. If you're buying GTAIV with the intent of straightlining through the storyline on your first play as quickly as possible, you are buying the wrong game.

The I must give my congrats to suds. He is one awesome dude. Maybe even The Dude's dude.
The latest issue of Australian magazine ZOO contains photographs of one of their journalists playing GTA IV on a large TV screen. As expected, the HUD is minimal, and the only thing that's permanently visible is the radar. The radar is surrounded by two semi-circles representing health and armour. Everything on the radar is translucent except for the roads. Things like weapons and wanted stars only appear when you are changing weapons or when you obtain a wanted level, we presume.

That's cool and all, but I liked the HUD from the old games as well. Never really presented a problem.

I also never had a problem with the GTA III series' HUD.
But if it really does hide everything (except for the map) when it's not in use...I welcome the change.
I wouldn't be surprised to see speed run videos of GTAIV in under eight or ten hours some day. Will that mean it's a short game? No. It just means highly skilled speed runs are fucking insane.

Have you see nthe 8 minute Morrowind run. Im not even kidding.
Speedruns, or even let's plays are no indication of a games length at all.
I mean, given that it is an achievement, Rockstar is expecting a 30-hour game completion to be a relative challenge. So I'm sure the main game will be a hefty piece of work, especially on the first time through. That's not even factoring all the hours I end up personally pouring into screwing around.
To be fair, I'm pretty sure Rockstar don't expect you to keep going back and back spending near 30 hours to beat an achievement. 30 hours is probably quite substantial to complete it in as long as you don't do some serious fucking around. I'm willing to bet a quite a few people get this their first playthrough without trying.

Of course, there are also achievements like "complete the first mission," right? So something being an achievement isn't necessarily indicative of any challenge level. I'm just going to figure we have almost no idea how long the main story is compared to other GTAs. That said, I'm sure I'll be satisfied with the game's length, considering I always spend more time in GTA games not doing the story missions than doing the story missions.

How long did the PS2 GTAs take if you just played through the story missions.

8 hours or less
You know, the RC missions.
For SA? Bullshit.

After the first feeding break, It'll be time to say hello to the family.
Seriously. I'm still deciding whether I'm going to try out the singleplayer when I first get the game or just spend a few months with free roam.
