I have never been big on multiplayer games. So I am kinda out of the loop. My girl started asking about playing games together. We are already looking into MMORPG's (something I am familiar with), but she also wanted games we can play on the couch together.
The only games I have that might fit the bill are:
Guitar Hero 1+2
Gauntlet
Alien Hominid (very hard for her).
Katamari 1+2 (how is the multi player?)
Co-op would be better to avoid her nod being as good as me (a new gamer vs a long time gamer).
I'm no master, but the Lego Star Wars games are great Co-Op games. The X-men legends and Marvel Allaince games are good Co-Op too. But you kinda already have to like those franchises.
Also, whenever I'm back home my mom and I play dynasty warriors.
You could also get single-player games that have puzzle-solving elements and just work on getting through the game together. Beyond Good & Evil is a good example, and has a strong female lead.

A usual suspect for this sort of situation is The Adventure of Cookie and Cream. I can't comment on it, as I've never picked it up personally.
My girlfriend and I play a lot of Pac Man Rally, Outlaw Tennis and Soul Caliber. She likes beating me up. You can find these really really cheap for $20 or less now.
I think games where a stronger player can carry a weaker one are better for co-opping with the missus. Gears of War comes to mind, as does Serious Sam. Any lightgun game. Devil Dice is a really sweet co-op puzzle game.

It;s pretty good, if a bit frustrating.

The Red Star is pretty hardcore. And also kinda hard to find, I hear.
