I have recently become a Wii owner and am looking around for good online games but i'm not really having luck. I don't know if this is because I'm easily confused so I'm not finding them or because they don't exsist. Any help with that would be great.
Also, does anyone know of any news about games like Catan and such coming to the wii online. I like the shop channel but I'd like to see more of what 360 is getting. It seems some developers somewhere would make something for this system as well wouldn't they?
Search for WiiWare in the PA forums and you'll find your answer about the independent developers. (Games like Catan)
The Wii doesn't have any online games in the NA region yet. Super Mario Strikers comes out in July (I think) and it will have full online support. And shortly after that games will trickle in with online play.
Until then, just enjoy the single player games... and invite some friends over to get your multiplayer fix in.
Doesn't the Pokemon game that just came out have some basic online play? Other than that, yeah, there aren't really any online games for Wii right now in the US.

The Wii looks like it will be the black sheep of the generation for Online support. Lousy friends codes, and patchy at best performance.
There are no online games to my knowledge for the system. I think the first big online game is going to be the Pokemon 3d battly game (whatever they are calling it), right guys? Or did they slip in some other multiplayer games before that? Have they announced if SSBM will have online?
If you want online play, the Wii is NOT the system to get right now. The 360 does that best presently, and the PS3 has the pieces in place to catch up if they can execute and you don't mind the extra price and lesser game options due to a late start.
Presently the Wii is the reigning king of party games. Games you can play multiplayer in one house with HUGELY diverse demographics. Bowling VS your Grandmother, or Drowning rabbits with carrot juice against the UPS guy.
Their party games are:
Wii sports
rayman raving rabbids
wario ware smooth moves
mario party 8
brain age wii academy
They are just coming into their more serious games in the fall. It takes a year or so for the exclusives to hit that were really designed for the system. Just like the PS3 is finally this fall/holiday getting some good games that are not 360 ports.
Wii does have some non-minigame stuff now that is great though:
Zelda
Elebits
Trauma Center
Super Paper Mario
RE4 Wii edition (its like a new game, and awesome)
And others I am surely forgetting. Titles I would recommend for budget titles if you find them used:
Excite Truck (HOLY INSANE FUN, but just not enough content and HORRIBLY lacking multiplayer modes)
Red Steel (better IMO than people have said, I like the controls, but it is ugly as sin)
Cooking Mama (sue me, I found this pretty damn fun)
Metal Slug anthology (huge amounts of oldschool goodness)
So those are my Wii picks, coming soon is Metroid Prime Corruption which is looking to be awesome congealed into CD form. And of course Mario Galaxies, and the smash brothers game
I agree with everything you said Smudge, and I would add SSX Blur to the non-minigame list if you're a fan of the series (but only if). The Pokemon game came out this week, and is indeed the first game to feature actual online competitive play in the US. But I don't think it's exactly getting the greatest reviews...

I didn't even realize it came out this week.
Yeah, me neither. I had to double check, what with all the other stuff that also dropped this week. But it did indeed. Shows how much interest I have in another Colosseum type game I guess. Now, if it was a full RPG, I'd be all over it.

Yeah. Me too.
BUT doesn't this one have DS -> Wii connectivity? I thought I read that a while back.
Pokemon Battle Revolution is basically the more expensive crack that the dealer sells you after he's got you hooked on the cheap stuff. You won't find it worth the purchase at all if you're not already really into Pokemon.

It *is* overpriced by about 15$.
But I think the reviews have been a little unfair. Diamond/Pearl is probably the best console RPG with a multiplayer component, and it's on a handheld. All good things.
So 50$ for a visualizer and quickmatch software is a little overpriced. But it's still a very fun thing to do on your Wii and it's online.
I'd imagine that by fall we'll start seeing quality Wii titles with online.

Are Wii's game region specific? I am a HUGE horse racing fan and I just noticed G1 Jockey Wii just got released for UK and is already out in Japan, can I play it on my NA system?

Would be interesting to see how it pans out.

No to being able to play, not until some kind of freeloader is released.

God damn it. Why do the good games NEVER come to America.
Or if you live in Europe, where they're playing Strikers right now.
Well not right now 'cause it's the middle of the night in most of Europe, but you get what I'm saying.
