Now, whether or not these assumptions are true, well, we'll have to wait and see.

Whoever said that 18 on the series list was the cap?
Not everybody will be returning but I highly doubt they'll remove entire game series from SSB:B, not even Game & Watch or Ice Climber. The only significance of the list is that there was still a blank space even after filling in all the SSB:M icons. Now that we have Animal Crossing, it's not evidence of anything in particular.
