I recently purchased a Wavebird for my Wii, and I find that I can't quite go back to wired controllers anymore.
I've heard that Logitech makes a really good one. My problem is, a search revealed quite a few different Logitech models for the PS2. Which one's cuisine reigns supreme?
I also saw some wireless Nerf controllers that seemed like they might be fun. Are they any good?
Lastly: Do any of the wireless controllers turn on the PS2 from a distance?
I really am liking my Nerf controller, it's a bit cheaper and doesn't have a rumble but it comes in all sorts of colours. But if you have the money go with the logitech. The only thing I didn't like about the logitech controllers is that the d-pad felt really loose to me, but I don't remember which model it was.
I got the Nyko ZERO PS2 controller and it's pretty nice, but its a very different shape and after long playing sessions tends to not agree with me. The aluminum panels are nice as is the button layout. It charges via USB, but the mini-usb end for the controller bent very easily.

This is true of the model I have, too. I actually keep two wired controllers around simply for fighters because of this. I still suggest the Logitech despite this, unless a tight responsive D-Pad is really high up on your requirements for a controller.

This is the logitech you should be looking at.
Edit: Oh, no, I don't think any would turn it on from a distance.
