I think if people could actually get to this forum without digging around, it might get some use and we wouldn't see the "I just got System ____ what games should I buy?) topics over and over, among other things.
Right now it seems the only way to get to the forum is to go into the G&T master sticky, click on one of the threads, and then click on one of the threads there, then click the forum listing from within that thread.
This would be like if they put a library on the moon.
Why don't we post the MOD forum on the front page too, huh?

I was thinking the same thing, also it should be made so that noone (but mods and admins of coarse) can post a thread in there, only threads deemed worthy enough should be moved there. Posting in threads though, will be allowed.

The mod forums is just that, it's the mod forum. Regular users have no need for it and shouldn't have that ability. The AFK forum is filled with information that EVERYBODY should have access to, including quick and easy access.

I'm not sure I understand the point you're making. It's not like there's a visible directory of threads that one would find within it, available for public reading.

Ecoterrorism is actually the single largest terrorist threat at the moment. They don't usually kill people, but they blow up or set on fire very expensive things.
I might make a poll if there is enough interest, but Bone Daddy needs to stop by first. I dont like doing things without my better half being around.
I flipped a coin. The coin said "not at this time."
Don't you think it'd cut down on repeat threads?
Well, that would hinge on someone oblivious enough not to notice a sticky or run a search being clever enough to notice a read-only forum and then reading it. So probably not enough to risk angering the volcano gods.

I just think the average person is more apt to check a visible forum specifically created to house answers to common questions before:
a) doing a search,
b) checking for a sticky (those things are always scanned over, anyway), or
c) making a new thread.
Cutting back on (a) and (c) would decrease server load, while (b) is often missed in heavily-trafficked forums.
I'm willing to bet that the majority of forumers don't even realize we have a special forum dedicated to the prevention of repeat threads. It's just sad it's tucked away in the corner.

There was a time when searching was not borked, and lo, we still saw this exact thread repeatedly.
Maybe you should move this to AFK then.

I think that AFK would actually gain some use if it was on the forum index and we linked to it in the usual early post in a thread that links to the thread that already exists.
I never go to AFK unless I know a thread is specifically there... (and the only threads I know are there are the "recommend me a game for system XYZ" threads) otherwise it's way too many steps to go check for a thread that just might be there.
And searching? When I search I always put the search field on G&T only so I don't get results from EE or H&A or whatever.

There's an interesting point. It'd be handy if the search function allowed selection of multiple forums to search, instead of just 'all or one'. It needs that other listbox (like the select industry box here; you hold down ctrl to select multiple items) to work, not the drop-down menu. Would adding that in be feasible in future?

Well, see, the chatlog is like the distilled and boiled-down essence of a forum. So it's not that H+R is a blackhole, but that, in concentrated form, it would eradicate life as we know it forever.

Er. As for the Game Recommendations, as I've noted elsewhere, the only threads we have in AFK are for the current consoles and the Dreamcast, so of course we're going to get threads about the SNES and Saturn and such.
I have a problem with the "game recommendations thread" concept as it stands. It doesn't seem to serve any really meaningful purpose. We had "game recommendations" stickied in G&T for, like, forever, and not only did no one ever seem to realize it was there, it wasn't much use because
1. When people come in asking for a game recommendation, they're not so much asking "what is good", they're asking for personal endorsements from real, living people they can respond to and decide whether they trust-- something an impersonal list doesn't provide. If they just wanted a list they'd go to gamerankings.
2. The nature of the list was such that since every game has someone somewhere who likes it, it gradually grew to encompass every single game ever made for that system. That made it not so useful. The format of the list meant no information was really given or easy to give except names; if the SNES list contained Final Fantasy III, Actraiser and Bugs Bunny's Whatever, how does a reader know one of these games is a "must own", one is a slightly obscure cult classic, and one probably shouldn't be on the list at all?
The only purpose served by the game recommendations thread while it was stickied seems to have been to provide an excuse to lock the endless and constant "what games should i buy" threads.
I'm not sure where I'm going with all this, but I think I am trying to say I question exactly what utility AFK can provide as a game recommendations repository even if we make it clearly visible and easy to navigate.
Alright I would suggest actually locking the AFK forum from anyone creating threads. People should only be allowed to post in threads deemed worthy enough to go there.

Yes. Oh, H&R is the black hole. Gotcha. Should we tell them that?

The reason I don't put anything in the chatlogs is because it would be deleted eventually anyway. This circle is spinning pretty quickly.
