Hotdogs! Beer! Peanuts! [The Bigs - Game On]

picked up The Bigs today for xbox360 and i gotta say, it's the most fun ive had in a baseball game.

i'll start off by saying, don't expect it to be slugfest, think of it more as a next-gen ken griffey jr. baseball. the players are suitably beefier, and there is some over-the-top (wall-"climbing"), but its basically baseball enhanced.

the gameplay revolves around the turbo and big-play meters. as a batter, youll earn bars of turbo when you pass on a ball, and you earn big play points when you get a hit (more points for doubles, etc.). the turbo is used for extra power when batting, extra speed when pitching, quicker players and throws in the field. the big play points accumulate until your meter is full, which then guarantees a home run when activated if you make contact with a pitch in that at bat. as a pitcher it allows all pitches at that at bat to be powered up. to earn turbo when pitching, pitch strikes. to earn big play points, strike out batters, make double plays, dive and leap for catches, and rob homeruns (complete with it's own mini game).

pitching works with a guage, hold down the button with a corresponding pitch and the guage will fill, let go of the button anywhere between the bar, and the top of the guage to get an accurate pitch. if you manage to let go right at the top you'll get a perfect pitch thats very difficult to hit. if you let go too earlier/late, the position of the pitch will be shown to the batter, and depending on your initial aim it will miss for a ball, and turbo for your opposition.

batting is all about timing. a button for contact hitting, x for bunting, and b for power hits. using the left analog stick and angling it in different directions will aim where you want to hit towards (up and any direction for the fence, down for a grounder/line drive, and so on).

baserunning is kinda wonky at first, but basically hold the left stick to the right when going to first, left when going to second and third, and then right for home. you HAVE to keep holding in the dierction of the base until your runner gets there, otherwise he'll just stop. tap a when youre close to the bag to slide and not worry about over/under-running. when theres a close play at the plate, an A button mashing mini-game will kick in between the runner and the catcher. smash A enough and the indicator should hopefully be in your favor and you knock over the catcher, or runner.

fielding is clunky, but not too bad. face buttons for the bases, right trigger for turbo, left trigger to switch player, and a button for diving and jumping. if theres a potential homerun to be robbed, an icon will show up on the fence, position your fielder and hit a, the camera will zoom in, slow down, and a display will pop up showing a pattern of buttons you need to press to make the catch. in turn, the a.i. will rob homeruns on practically every attempt, but depending on their glove stat, they wont always succeed.

theres exhibition, play now, online (1v1, 2v2), homerun derby, homerun pinball, and rookie challenge. rookie challenge is a baseball rpg where you create a ball-player, and then face a whole slew of challenges in order to earn points to buy stat increases, and unlock attitude equipment (flair). the challenges can be anything from steal 2 bases in 3 innings, to hit 2 homeruns in one inning, and so on. ive been playing rookie challenge for about 4 or 5 hours and im only 26% done. another thing about the rookie mode is that it allows you to steal 10 players, 1 from 10 different teams, as you unlock and beat more teams.

its a blast, and i can see myself playing this a whole lot.

if anyone else has it, lets use this thread to set up games, tournaments, etc. baseball talk is cool, too. oh and its available for the 360, ps3, psp, ps2, and wii. the wii has waggle, but no online.

No online for the Wii is a sad thing, but if it has local 2v2, this game will certainly go in my 'Maybe' basket.

i cant be the only one on this forum to get game, can i?

i'll reiterate, im a fan of baseball, but baseball videogames tend to be boring. this is not boring, and not as XXXtreme as slugfest. its a ton of fun.

I liked the Baseball Simulator 1.000 series on the NES and the SNES.

    Does that count?

I got this for 360 recently, and I'm simultaneously thrilled with and pissed off at this game. Thrilled because it's big fun -- but not too ridiculous -- arcade baseball, the MLB Jam I was hoping for (Slugfest? Pfft, yeah, that's a bit too much). Pissed because they gave Nick Punto a *** rating for fielding and ** for his arm -- believe me, if he didn't have 4/5-star abilities in those categories, the Twinkies would be benching his .200-hitting ass faster than you can say "Alexi Casilla".

I have also created a talented yet ugly Pat Neshek homunculus. Berserk mutant sidearm delivery FTW.

The Wii version sounds pretty good. Like a fleshed out Wii Sports. I <think> but I'm not sure, that it only requires the wiimote and not the 'chuck to play. I recall reading that the pitching/swinging was essentially the same as Wii Sports, and that other techniques in the game are fairly straightforward.

I'm not much of a baseball/sports gamer though. I'll be all over Strikers and I love tennis videogames though.

I thought about buying it but I have already bought six games in one month for my 360. I think I'm gonna have to slow down a bit.

    I'm still buying NCAA 2008. :)

I'll have to check and see if there is a demo for Bigs... I really, really hated 2k7.

Nah, you need the nunchuck. And apparently the controls are awkward (baserunning is said to be terrible), there's no online play and -- worst of all -- there's no Home Run Pinball. I was leaning towards the Wii version because I'd rather have fun swinging/pitching controls than creepy Polar Express Justin Morneau graphics, but those three things are a total deal-breaker.

I'm on the fence about it. I've not bought a sports game in... well ever I don't think.

But this looks like the NBA Jam for Baseball. How close is that?

I might pick it up for the Wii if I get some extra cash this month.

Nintendo Power hated the controls for the Wii version, but if you read between the lines you could see that it was kind of a cheap review. Like, they said that throwing to bases with motion sensing would throw it to the wrong base, but then they said using the regular controls to throw to bases was pointless. Any second opinions on the controls?

The wii version is a lot of fun for batting and pitching, especially when you are playing with actual people and not the computer robbing you on every single home run. I don't hate the baserunning controls so much, it takes some getting used to but it's decent. What can get really irritating is the fielding controls. Most of the time the problem is with the motion sensing as an easy play to first often goes to 2nd or 3rd instead. If you can get past some of the fielding issues, the game is pretty solid and it can be a lot of fun for multiplayer once everyone figures out the fielding controls.

They even have the same problem with a big name no-showing due to rights issues (though that's the only time I'm going to compare Barry Bonds to Michael Jordan).

considering the beefier nature of the players, i dont think bonds would fit on the screen. i heard hes holding out to be the last boss for whenever capcom makes MvC3.

Zing! Seriously, the galoot-sized players are a bit weird. Joe Mauer's head looks like Kurt Angle's, it's creepy.

played some rookie mode tonight. had to hit 3 homers against the astros in their stadium. it took me a couple tries because their left field wall is a bitch, and the extra length added to center requires a strato-blast.

but then i hit 12 homeruns. so glorious watching their pitchers lose pitches left and right and have to bring in a reliever.
