So I went up to the cabin this weekend with some buddies. I am an owner of a DS and didn't bring it with me. Infact, I haven't played it since I got it and I have played it only about 3 times. I currently own Mario Kart and Animal Crossing. Handhelds in the past have just never appealed to me, but this weekend in the car, the DS was a godsend.
I was having a blast and had one of those "What the hell have I been missing?"
So now I ask for help. I am in need of some strong DS game suggestions. All game genre's apply, however, I am a fan favorite of strategic and brain thinking ones. I also enjoy challenges, so no push overs.
I have the Phat Red Mario Kart edition and it is in need of love. Help me!
Edit - Definite fun factor has to be there too. Board game games are great too, be nice if they had a Settlers of Catan on the DS. Anything unique is also a plus.
Planet Puzzle League can be as hard or as easy as you want it to be. The New York Times Crossword looks like a good thinking game, though I haven't played it myself yet.
Sorry, it meets none of your criteria-it is pathetically easy-but New Super Mario Bros is definitely a good buy.
I just bought a DS, and these are on the top of my list:
Etrian Odyssey - old school PC- RPG dungeon crawler feel (including the old-school "I will rape you" difficulty). Features self-made maps using the touch screen, and multiple classes with 20 odd skills each.
Hoshigami Remix - re-touched version of a brutally hard (and now apparently substantially unbalanced) turn based strategy RPG.
Hotel Dusk has been mentioned.
Puzzle Quest - take a puzzle game, stick it in a blender with an RPG, and this is what you get. This will probably be the next title I pick up.
I thought this thread would be about a DS game based on Eureka (Sci-fi show). Thread title does not deliver.
Thank god, that show was awful.
For puzzle style game, I really enjoyed march of the minis. It is sort of lemmings like. The gameplay is very different, but you are basically assisting little guys that walk forward from dying horrible in their attempt to reach an end goal. It wasn't really that hard, but you can download levels from others, never tried that though as I have not taken my DS online yet.
Someone mentioned kirby for a challenge, and I would disagree with it being a huge challenge, but it is a downright blast to play and HIGHLY innovative in its use of the pointer. I love the game, and it has a decent amount of replay with the 3 different kirby's and the minigames.
I found Advance Wars abit too challenging to me in that it became frustrating, so you might like that a lot. I had also never played an AW game before, so I am sure that was part of my failure.

I was under the impression that The Settlers would be just that, but to be honest I've never played Settlers of Catan and probably wouldn't be able to tell you for sure.

i didnt like kirby canvas curse too much, but i did find yoshi touch and go really fun, yoshi island 2 is out if you liked the first one, new super mario bros, if you have friends with a ds, get bomberman, im in the middle of pokemon and enjoying it quite a bit but that's because i know someone i can battle. phoenix wright is pretty interesting but can drag on, and trauma center is fun too. oh and tetris, i just crushed my friend at work in a vs match of push. i had to win, i was trash talking for quite a while before we actually played.
I must second the Puzzle Quest nod. I just got a DS 2 weeks ago, and between that and Brain Training, I haven't played much of anything else. If you like Bejeweled, or that style of puzzle game, then you'll love Puzzle Quest. It's a RPG, but instead of fighting the traditional way, battles are fought with on the puzzle board. You gain experience, level up, learn new spells, craft weapons, recruit a party, and build up towns that you've conquered. You can find a demo for the PC <a href="http://www.gamedaily.com/canvases/gd/_a/download-puzzle-quest-demo/20070315101009990002>here.

Duck was a neutral party, so he brought the ultimatum to the cows.
right, a friend of mine thinks she's getting a DS, and was wondering what kinds of racing games are any good for it. I understand that Burnout isn't, and i'm not sure how she is with mario kart (i'm assuming she's after something more serious), so.. any suggestions?

Mario Kart DS breaks when you learn the "snaking" technique and play online vs. people using the "snaking" technique.
I was reasonably okay with Burnout Legends ... it's disappointing how good a job they did with the PSP version and then just gave the fuck up on the DS. Nevertheless, there's a small margin of charm there.
MKDS is fantastic, especially if you have friends to play against.
NFS:MW is pretty mediocre. It sucks at first because you have to play it with the sound up or else you'll never know if you're skidding or just turning. It's really confusing.
Race Driver: Create & Race seems like it has a lot of potential because you can design your own tracks, and Codemasters has a good track record (pardon the pun).
I'm hoping to see some sort of sim-style racer. GT Pro Series on the Wii is better than people make it out to be, but to be honest it would be much more at home on the DS with its graphical style and simplistic physics model.

It's cheap too.
Also Advance Wars is always a good choice. For good challange I suggest Kirby Canvas Curse as well.
I have that same DS!! :^: :^:

But not one from me!

I thought this would be about a DS game based on Eureka's Castle, Nickelodeon circa 1989.
If you were dissapointed, imagine how I must feel.

Trace Memory is a quick and interesting little adventure/mystery game. A little bit dated by now but has a great "feel" to it.
Any of the Phoenix Wright games, but you probably already know that...
and just to say again, Hotel Dusk!
I was under the impression that The Settlers would be just that, but to be honest I've never played Settlers of Catan and probably wouldn't be able to tell you for sure.

You buy Polarium and you enjoy it.
I'd sell it to anyone who would want it.
I wouldn't say Polarium is a great game ... but I certainly got my $10 out of it a few times over.
oh man me too
Exactly. I bought it full price and still play it ever so lovingly. So I am sure at the cheap price it is now he would love it.
And well, if he doesn't, he should just go buy Metriod Fusion.

There's Pokemon Mystery Dungeon and Izuna the Unemployed Ninja to fill that niche.

As for dungeon crawlers, there's at least one Final Fantasy game out for the DS, otherwise you should look into Etrian Odyssey.
If you are into GBA games, there's quite a few there. You can look into the Fire Emblem series and the Advance Wars games there.
I thought there was some hype for the game and it was a love or hate relationship? I never got it since I didn't have a DS at the time.
I've not touched my DS in about 6-8 months, and there's just nothing that excites me.
It's just an awful grind RPG game with unnecessarily cutesy characterization that gets old quick.
i'd heard it wasn't as good as all the hype around it, but wasn't a bad game. Care to elaborate?
edit: i see you have done!
